UPDATE on to be pissed off I have been offered a council FLAT instead of a house?

Thought I would update on my previous thread as you were all so sympathetic and concerned for me Grin.

We have taken the flat and will move in tomorrow. We have no choice and will be unable to be put on the transfer list for a year and will then probably have to wait a further 2/3 years for a house to come up.

The flat is on the (top) 2nd floor of a small block. We are 'lucky' in that the block is being upgraded and they have put in new windows/balcony doors/front doors and replaced all the railings around the two balconies. There is one off the kitchen and one off the lounge. The flat is very light and airy (although was stinky) and DH has painted/bleached it to within an inch of it's life and it is now presentable. There was decent laminate floor down already and it has a recently fitted kitchen, new toilet!! and almost new radiators. We did not found any mould/damp at all which we were very impressed by! The DCs rooms are big enough and mine and DH's is much bigger than our current one.

There are 18 flats in the block in all and every 3 flats (Grd/1st/2nd floor) gets to share a reasonable sized gated garden that each overlooks. We all have large sheds as well so the trampoline and bikes can all get stored in there.

The block seems quite quiet. I am a bit meh about it now. I am hoping there will be other DCs in there that mine can play with and I will be quite happy. We have a very large town park/farm/paddling pool area within 10 mins walk. DD's sec school is walking distance and her mates live around the corner.

We have worked out that after paying rent on this, we will have over £2100 a month to live on! That is with just DH working. I can decide if I want to go back to work or not probably after the summer when DC4 is 2.

I have probably been worried for nothing and am looking forward to getting back on track and saving for a new house of our own.

Thanks to the council and all those who sent their good wishes Thanks.

Good luck to you and your family OP. I hope can now start looking forward to getting your own place again.

As far as I can see, regardless of OP original situation, her family fell on hard times and used the safety net that is the benefit system, (which we would all be entitled to) should we find ourselves in the same situation. OP mentioned her disposable income to state that she is planning to start saving so they can get their own house again, thus freeing up the social housing she has been given. Surely this is the proper use of the benefit system!

Me personally, wouldn't swap places with her, and after mortgage, bills etc, we certainly don't have that amount of disposabe income, we do however get to chose where we live.

CREEPYWEEBRACKETS they are supposed to clear the property and gardens befofre wyou moved in, although we also had that problem when i moved into a council place up north, that i left due to DV, but we ended up clearing the garden, they did tell us it had been done, in the fact it was now just one big massive pile! And thaty they had cleaned the place thoroughly as in the insides of teh cupboards were still brown! I think when people are desperate they should take whatever they are given and seeing as by the sounds of it they arent going to be there froever its got to be a good thing.

I think the OP has used the system in the right way and it is reassuring to know, that it works SOMETIMES. We did however get a decoratorsp pack, one tub of really cheap emulsion per room and tin of gloss and undercoat, which was okay, apart from the fact it only covered half the room!

MyLittleMiracle · 08/03/2012 08:57

PS OP i really do wish you all the best, and hopefully you will manage to find your feet again!

BEST WISHES AND GOOD LUCK

£2100 a month after rent to live on? And your moaning, Are you for real? This country is a joke!!!! Both myself and husband work and we don't have that before paying our mortgage!!! Why do you need social housing???? I suggest that if you want a house go pay for one yourself! If £2100 was a typo I apologise by the way!!! But really? Did you seriously expect to get any sympathy???

FlossieTeacakeShouldFakeIt · 08/03/2012 16:10

Why are so many people telling the OP off for moaning? She has come back to say she was wrong for moaning and is pleased with her flat. She admitted she had probably been worrying for nothing.

MrsKittyFane · 08/03/2012 16:56

Sorry if this has been said, will settle in and read whole thread later.

So, hope your 'kids' aren't missing their trampoline too much.

(still think OP is a wind up :( )

Bob Crow of the RMT pays £150 per week for his Housing Association Property. It is in Woodford Green, North London.

"His basic pay rose to £94,747 at the end of 2009, according to figures from the union, and his overall pay package rose from £122,167 to £133,183. I wonder what it is now in 2012????

It's wrong.

If you don't need social housing, you shouldn't use it - The fact that you can, is irrelevant. You shouldn't. I think it is morally wrong.

Pst OP, I have something for you...

The OP and her family have had a rough time. It happens to, what some consider, well off people too.

Glad it's not as bad as you thought OP.

Good luck for the future.

Baboos, you said, "we do however get to chose where we live."

With disposable income of £2100 per month, so does the OP (within reason).

I do think it's very short-sighted to boast about your situation when there are lots of people who are equally in need who would give their eye-teeth for the house/flat you've been offered.

Our story is this:

2003 - move in to 3 bed private rental.

2005, 2007 - give birth to two girls.

July 2009 - find out I was pregnant with DD3; DD1 falling over lots - GP says 'virus'.

September 2009 - DD1's preschool suggest assessment as 'slightly behind' - assessed and 1:1 support offered. "Diagnosis" - slightly immature.

Early October 2009 - DD1 falling over for no reason again. Fast-tracked to hospital. Seen by Registrar, decided to keep us overnight. "Think you're going to be here a lot...."

Late October -Results of tests returned. Global development delay, epilepsy. CT scan clear.

April 2009 -MRI; DD3 born.

May 2009 - Results of MRI - diffuse cortical dysplasia.

January 2010 - Statement of SEN. Place at Special School confirmed.

Feb 2011 - It's clear that this house is unsuitable for DD1. She is still using a potty during the day because there is no downstairs toilet. She has no sense of danger with behavioural difficulties. It's impossible for me to take the children to the park on my own. We have a very small back garden. DH has to work part-time to allow for compressed hours in holidays to support with DD1.

Every house we applied for left us at position 130 on the list.

We applied for housing, and ticked the 'this property is unsuitable' box. We are invited to a 'housing needs' appointment. A young girl (age about 20) sits before us with a stony face, saying "everyone gets someone to write in to say they need a bigger house. A house in your town comes up every 5 to 10 years. You've got very little chance of getting anything - I suggest private rental."

We explain that we wouldn't be able to adapt a private let to keep DD1 safe. We are living in a house my Uncle owns (he is a bona fide landlord) so can adapt the house. We have an electromagnetic lock on the door, stairgates everywhere, acrylic glass on the bannisters (she was climbing through them, and has poor balance).

July 2011 - finally an OT comes to see us. She is horrified when she sees DD1 (DD1 was having a bad day) and the house we are living in. She arranges Band 2 prioritisation (1 being 'if we don't move you you'll die, 2 you need to move ASAP, 3 most other people, 4 you can sort yourself out if you want to, 5 you've abused housing in the past, etc).

February 2012 - 3 bed house in our town is listed. It has a wet room upstairs which would be helpful.

We finished 3rd in the bidding, but we are offered the property based on DD1's needs. The property needs lots doing to it. Work finished today on the structure.

So,

We had an offer letter today. We have to take the keys on Monday. We will be charged from Monday for rent. Our tenancy here doesn't finish until April 2nd. We have to either move in there and ask them to cover the remaining tenancy here, or pay for both tenancies for two weeks overlap.

The whole house is in need of decoration. All rooms are papered but the paper is very old and torn in every room. The council lady said 'it's in a terrible state'. But, they have offered us £380 worth of vouchers as a 'token gesture' towards the decoration.

I am so grateful. Ok, the downstairs toilet doesn't even have plaster on the walls (it's just brieze block), the kitchen is teeny (5 units in total) but it's a house with a large garden - perfect for DD1's needs. We will have to pay for the carpeting, fencing of the garden (DD1 has to be in secure grounds unless 1:1 supervision - she escapes), etc., but we have a home that is suitable (once adapted) and a secure tenancy.

I wouldn't moan about that for the world.
