to think that no, actually, SS wont be interested that DS(3) watched Hellboy?

DS (3) loves proper 'boy' films like Spiderman, Transformers, Batman, Starwars etc. He recently watched Hellboy at MILs and apparantly loved it. Ive bought it for him and he has watched it a few times (Ive vetted it and there is one scene that I think might be a bit too grisly for him so I fast forward past this bit). Apart from this one scene to me its no different to Spiderman and all the other 'hero' type films and there is no swearing (apart from a few craps)

My friend (whose DS also watches Spiderman, Batman etc) has said that if DS goes into nursery going on about Hellboy, then they will call SS as its a sign that we are letting him watch inappropriate films Hmm as its a horror film (its classed as a PG-13, Spiderman is a 12 so to me there isnt much difference)

I take my lead from DS, and I do think there may be a time when he will be more aware of what goes on in these films (eg. the idea that there is a hell, baddies that want to hurt us etc) so when that time comes I will of course take the lead from him again. But for now he loves the action bits, we have a right laugh together when we watch them and tbh its nice to not have to watch endless Chris and Pui (and we do turn it into a learning experience - what colour is Hellboy, how many baddies can you see etc Grin)

I dont want to start the age old debate of age limits for films etc, we are just talking about the usual films that most of the kids at his nursery have seen. My friend just thinks that me letting DS watch Hellboy is an invite to get SS involved

So, is she being ridiculous and hypocritical? Or am I being too laid back about what SS would get involved in?

A three year old? Are you actually serious? I haven't watched the said film, but putting a three year old in front of a film called Hellboy is making me at least absolutely wince. I don't care if you weren't asking for opinions.

There are loads of lovely films and DVDs aimed at this age group if you feel you want him to watch one. I agree with Scarlett - 3 year olds should be catching woodlice and eating worms and playing on trikes.

What about Star Wars where the goodie gets slashed in twain by a red laser wielding 7ft cloaked masked man with a booming voice whos got a face like a stitched together patchwork quilt?

Or where a massive spaceship with thousands of Stormtroopers gets nuked?

Or where Alderan (?) gets blown up, thousands of innocents gone in a second?

Or where Yoda dies

Christ, even on Power Rangers baddies who have shoulder pads made out of gums and teeth get slashed, yet stick it on Nickleodeon or put a green U on it and its fine, apparently.

I've been recently on a couple of child protection courses, and the young child watching inappropriate stuff does come up regularly as a senario. So I wouldn't say that they won't be interested at all.

I don't know the film so I can't comment on it. However I'd expect it wouldn't come up unless more things came to light about your ds when it might be used to build up a bigger picture on your ds if other allegations were made.

Proudnscary · 06/03/2012 13:50

No way would I let a three year old watch this. I think it's idiotic of you.

I wouldn't let my 7 or 10 year old watch it either, or any other 12+ films (especially where violence or horror features).

Absolutely no need, plenty of great films around.

Don't give a fuck if this makes me Victorian.

ArielNonBio · 06/03/2012 13:52

Star Wars isn't viewing for a 3 year old either.

Hellboy · 06/03/2012 13:52

It doesnt make you Victorian Proud, its totally up to you at the end of the day.

valiumredhead · 06/03/2012 13:53

It wouldn't cross my mind to let a 3 year old watch Star Wars either tbh.

Hellboy · 06/03/2012 13:53

its not a 12 btw, its a PG-13 (which is the same as a PG)

Everything Scarlett said. How frightening that people are so accepting of this. Shame on the people who let their babies watch this crap.

I think you might be misunderstanding just a teeeeeeeeeeensy bit, OP.

The point is not that you should specifically be avoiding Hellboy.

The point is that just possibly perhaps slightly potentially maybe any films that are violent and ugly and show distressing scenes might not be the best viewing for, and really I cannot state this enough, a tiny tiny child.

Surely to all that's holy and precious your main thought should not be "what is the most I can possibly get away with", but "what is the very best I can possibly be doing for my child."

Just to clarify for those sitting on the fence:

a small child

the baddie from Hellboy

Hmm
Proudnscary · 06/03/2012 13:56

Abso-fucking-lutely Scarlett

I cannot believe this

(I mean I quite literaly cannot believe this...)

Hellboy · 06/03/2012 13:56

Just to further clarify - the second pic Scarlett links to is in the film for 10 seconds and we skip past that whole scene

bochead · 06/03/2012 13:58

The most disturbing thing I ever saw as a child was watership down on the big screen. My Mum still regrets letting me go on a class trip to that film.

ArielNonBio · 06/03/2012 13:58

Oh that's ok then, Hellboy

Christ on a bike.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 06/03/2012 13:58

I don't think I've seen Hellboy so I don't think I can comment tbh. But if it's comparable to the old Star Wars films then really I can't see an issue if you judge it to be OK for your own ds.

My observation years ago was that Power Rangers had a negative effect on little children's behaviour, so avoided it until ds was older (by which time we enjoyed laughing at it together - it's a daft as custard). I doubt it damaged them, it just seemed to make them a bit fighty. Star Wars didn't at all though - maybe because it's not all hand to hand combat or summat Confused

Hellboy · 06/03/2012 14:01

Well Scarlett linked to it to (try and) prove a point about the film, so I have just pointed out that he hasnt seen that bit.

Inappropriate parenting.

What happened to the word 'no'

Get a grip women.

thescarlettpimpernel · 06/03/2012 14:03

I proved an excellent point about the film, as it happens.

So tell us, OP, what will you be watching with him when he is 5? Perhaps by then you can progress to Hostel and Saw? After all he'll be at school by then, won't he? Properly toilet trained, able to tie his own shoelaces! High time he progresses to some torture scenes, or maybe a little light sexual assault.

MrsClown1 · 06/03/2012 14:05

I would not allow a 3 year old to watch a film for over 13s. Someone once said to me 'once you put an image into your child's head you cant take it out again'. Mind saying that, my son was one of the only children in his year 5 class at school who was not allowed to play on Grand Theft Auto so I know parents allow things like this. I used to call his friends parents and ask them to put it away whilst my son was there. Infact, 1 parent actually said that he had told them he was not allowed to play on it!

omg - I have just looked at the baddie from Hellboy! No I definitely would not allow a 3 year old to watch that! I am shocked, or am I just old.

Hellboy · 06/03/2012 14:05

Jenai - IMO all the superhero type films are the same, you dont see much if any direct killing but it is implied. The only dodgy bit for me in Hellboy is the bit Scarlett linked to.

Funnily enough the only programme that makes him 'fighty' is Power Rangers.

OP posts:
McPhee · 06/03/2012 14:05

Your the parent..He is the child

I really can't comprehend why anyone would actively encourage this sort of viewing, for a frigging 3 year old!

Christ if I knew you...

Hellboy · 06/03/2012 14:06

Scarlett - I was thinking Saw and Hostel is a bit too weak, maybe Human Centipede or something, he loves insects.

OP posts:
thescarlettpimpernel · 06/03/2012 14:07

MrsClown no no it's fine. The OP skips through that bit. Because as we all know, children cannot operate remote controls. So everything fine.
