I mean wtf? How did it come to this? how did she end up presenting 'I can't believe it isn't science 2' on the bbc?

What programme is this and what is it about? When was it on?

Seeline · 06/03/2012 10:31

Is she related to Dr Brian Cox? She seemed to present all her bits of information with the same innane grin. Put me right off.....

desperatenotstupid · 06/03/2012 10:44

Its proffesor Brian Cox - just saying Grin

sciencepolice · 06/03/2012 11:37

I think they must all get the same training in speaking r.e.a.l.l.y...s.l.o.w.l.y...so as not to scare the idiots....

hmm it's a well known fact that while women may occasionally aspire to the title of Dr. it is almost entirely men who make it to professor :(

Caught the end of this on the tv tonight. I was at college with her!

entropygirl · 12/03/2012 12:13

She didnt used to talk like that thought did she? Must be the media training...

Fecklessdizzy · 12/03/2012 12:15

My Gran was a Professor ...

entropygirl · 12/03/2012 12:26

Any one we will have heard of?

It certainly used to be rare and is still fairly unusual....my department has a couple out of 30 ish.

Fecklessdizzy · 12/03/2012 12:48

Dame Kathleen Lonsdale, She was at UCL in the '50's and '60's.

Mumsyblouse · 12/03/2012 12:54

Fecklessdizzy, I just googled her, she sounds amazing. But sadly, women professors, especially in science subjects, are relatively rare considering how many women there are at the early stages in academia, say teaching/research fellows (pretty 50/50).

Fecklessdizzy · 12/03/2012 13:07

From what my Mum's told me it sounds really hard to juggle work and family when you get to that level, you have to be very driven and focused to keep on track. My Grandad worked but not such long hours and he liked to cook! ( Top trifle maker Grin ) Their three children all went to boarding school which lightened the load a bit ...

I'm in awe of anyone who can keep that many balls in the air, frankly ... I only work part-time and I still feel like I'm permenantly surfing a catastrophy curve ( although a bit less Mumsnettery would probably help ... )

GavisconJunkie · 12/03/2012 13:13

She drives me mad with her weird bobbly David Gray head & super patronising voice.

She actually makes Kate humble easy to take!

scrablet · 12/03/2012 13:22

(entirely off topic, one of my best friends is a professor, and well deserved too!)

lashingsofbingeinghere · 12/03/2012 14:27

Even more off topic - There was a female prof at my biology dept at uni. She kept a snake, I believe called Beatrice, and used to feed it live mice. I think her speciality was pseudoscorpions. (Yep, who new some invertebrates have to cheek to want to impersonate something so evil).

lashingsofbingeinghere · 12/03/2012 14:28

the cheek

MardyBra · 12/03/2012 14:33

Haven't seen last night's yet, but my kids loved the first episode, and, as a non scientist, I also found it interesting and learnt a few things from it too. What's the problem? It's nice to see two female presenters in fact, rather than the usual BBC format of a lead male presenter and back up token female.

Jenstar21 · 12/03/2012 15:35

I work in a medical school at a RG University, and about 1/3 of our professoriat is female. Just saying....

entropygirl · 12/03/2012 16:08

glad to hear medical schools are more progressive than say chemistry departments...

agree with the goodness of having two female presenters though....

just wish they hadn't chosen someone who can't reason logically....

I mean how many times do you have to beat someone at badminton before they stop picking themselves ahead of you in the team? Is that the action of a real scientist I ask you???

Zhx3 · 12/03/2012 20:00

I have to admit, I remember her name but not her face Blush. She was a year or two below me.

Agree how good it is to see two female presenters on a programme which is distinctly "unfrilly".

I think she comes across well!

MummytoKatie · 12/03/2012 23:23

I remember her from university. I was on a Varsity team with her. She's lovely. Although I suspect that she had an alien being living in her as she was one of those who was expecting a first, played two university sports, was on 17 committees and then decided to whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies just for fun!
