that he should come dressed as his favourite book character for world book day tomorrow?

How am I going to sort a costume this evening? (stealth request for ideas?)

He has a gruffalo costume but it's a bit small for him and inadvisable to wear for a day as he's newly out of nappies and would struggle to take it off...

Surely a bit of advance notice (ie last week) would have been sensible?

same problem here, am sending ds in round glasses with a wand for Harry Potter

dexter73 · 29/02/2012 10:32

It is something that happens all the time once they get to school! We were always having to bring something in/dress up for something at a day or twos notice. Have a look at this.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 29/02/2012 10:32

Dress him in brown and face paint either a dog (kipper) or a mouse from the Gruffalo or if you can sew could you make a smock type thing and send him as the Smartest Giant in Town?

YANBU either.

tigermoll · 29/02/2012 10:33

If its such short notice, then please don't stress it, - I can't emphasise enough just how little it matters (in the long run)

What about something simple:

  • christopher robin just wears shorts, shirt and a hat.
  • Captain pugwash/general pirate in a stripy t-shirt and bandana
  • spot the dog in ears, tail and face painted patch over eye.

Surely he's got something - even just a pirate eye patch with a sword or something would do. Whatever you've got he can be. There's always a book about Pirates/ Vikings/ Policemen/ Builders that'll fit. Don't get stressed. Smile

CMOTDibbler · 29/02/2012 10:35

Does he have a plastic bucket ? Ds went as Harry and the dinosaurs last year like that

grumblinalong · 29/02/2012 10:35

YANBU to be annoyed. Wait until he gets to school though...there's a different special day every flipping week.

My two DS's are both going as Horrid Henry, blue jumper, blue jeans, trainers and messy hair (that bit is not hard as they are both natural scarecrows). Their behaviour is pretty much like Henry's too so I'm sure they'll win first prize Grin

kilmuir · 29/02/2012 10:37

send him in his own clothes with a book if needed. tell school not enough notice

kilmuir · 29/02/2012 10:38

sorry just saw its a nursery, then ignore it, optional

annalovesmrbates · 29/02/2012 10:40

Harry and the Dinosaurs, just need a bucket and some dinosaur toys.

wimblehorse · 29/02/2012 10:43

Good ideas, thanks.

Am remembering seeing a pirate hat somewhere in the house, so am sure can rustle up an eye patch and stripey T-shirt. Then just need to find a suitable pirate book and persuade ds that it is his favourite..

I was annoyed that DS's nursery only told us on Monday but a day's notice is very annoying!
Has he got any dressing up stuff at all? I'd just send him in that, even if there's only a tenuous link to a book, just so he won't feel left out.

DS is being Mr Strong - two squares of cardboard covered in red fabric, over the shoulders in sandwich board style. He's got red clothes to wear, and a green hat. I was thinking it would be fairly easy to do other Mr Men in that way too.

MidnightWorry · 29/02/2012 10:46

i dont bother with world book day. they go in as they would normally

BrianTheBrainSurgeon · 29/02/2012 10:47

That would definitely be my struggle - to get DS (3.6 yo) to settle on a favourite book.
Last time I asked him he said "the green one" Grin

QuintessentialyHollow · 29/02/2012 10:47

Surely the easiest is Caspar the friendly ghost? If he is only little, you only need to sacrifice a pillow case! Grin

BornToFolk · 29/02/2012 10:49

No way am I asking DS what his favourite book is! I told him what he was going as. When he's old enough to make his own costume, THEN he can choose what he goes as!

wimblehorse · 29/02/2012 10:49

Ooh I like the Mr Men ideas.

May get creative with a cardboard box and ds' paints this evening...

YANBU, It is short notice, but I agree with smee and tigermoll that a little creative thinking can make a wonderful costume cheat.
Best one of those I ever saw was a toddler wearing yellow shorts and a red t-shirt, carrying a small cardboard box pot marked 'HUNNY' - a very cute Winnie the Pooh.
Red t-shirt and blue trousers = Thing 1/ Thing 2?
An apron and whiskers - Bandulu from Rastamouse?
Or, if you want to wreak revenge, a toy guitar and an old checked hat - the busker from Tabby McTat - evil Grin

SoupDragon · 29/02/2012 10:50

[shrug]

I had 24 hours notice to produce a superhero costume for DD. Just be inventive with the dressing up box.

Tonksforthememories · 29/02/2012 10:53

YANBU about the notice, but we tend to find a 'costume' then root through their library of books to find one that matches. :o

Last year DD1 went as Bethany the ballet fairy, and DD2 went as Mog.

DuchessofMalfi · 29/02/2012 10:54

I find Asda or Matalan a good source of cheap costumes (I'm useless at sewing and have no imagination :o). DS was fascinated by a Little Red Riding Hood costume we saw yesterday. I didn't buy it though.

smellyfeet · 29/02/2012 10:55

God that's short notice. They should have planned better.

Even if you did have a week to get it together, fave book character still takes planning.

DD's preschool just asked for their fave book to be bought in.

redskyatnight · 29/02/2012 10:57

Put DS in favourite costume.
Find book that vaguely relates to that costume (even if lots of imagination required).
Tell DS it is his favourite book.
Done.
