that he should come dressed as his favourite book character for world book day tomorrow?

How am I going to sort a costume this evening? (stealth request for ideas?)

He has a gruffalo costume but it's a bit small for him and inadvisable to wear for a day as he's newly out of nappies and would struggle to take it off...

Surely a bit of advance notice (ie last week) would have been sensible?

oh nooo, he doesnt have a brown hat, or brown clothes (brown hat + brown clothes = looks like a giant turd surely?)

Might just sellotape a copy of the book to his chest instead.

There are many characters in the Gruffalo. Mouse ears and a tail should be fairly straightforward.

Gribble · 29/02/2012 13:21

I have got a god awful brown crocheted (sp?) monstrosity cover-up type thing that I could stick spikey type things down the back. Cardboard horns...mmmmmm maybe I feel a Mister Maker moment coming on here.....

I could defo do Charlie and the Chocolate factory. We've got a navy jumper, jeans and hes not had his hair cut for about 4 months. Print off a pic of a Wonka bar and stick it on some cardboard.

Or reckon Id get away with Oliver Twist? Can mess up some of his old clothes, paint some mud on his face, mess his hair up and send him in with an empty plate?

Gribble · 29/02/2012 13:23

yea i cant send him in as Darth Vader can I? Blush

Am off to raid the wardrobes. Bugger, I was in the charity shop on Monday aswell, why didnt I look for anything for tomorrow?

Can you not adjust his Gruffalo costume so he can wear it over him like a cape? Love the Charlie Bucket idea, .

Gribble · 29/02/2012 13:25

Oh Maryz, there is no way in hell he will wear anything except his Darth Vader outfit or his Bumblebee from Transformers costume. Im going to have to sew him into whatever I make mwahahahahahaha

Tattyhead78 · 29/02/2012 13:26

That is so stupid. Isn't the nursery meant to be providing the service to you, rather than the other way around?! It is this sort of thing that makes me seriously question whether it is even worth trying to have children if this is the sort of nonsense you have to put up with. I am sure it doesn't stop there either, what with the lunchbox police and nonsensical school uniform rules.

Dress him in green. Pop some antenna on his head. He is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. That's what i'm doing.

wimblehorse · 29/02/2012 13:46

dh just pointed out that ds has a copy of the Axel Scheffler illustrated Cats book and Growltiger is a pirate cat.
Cat ears, drawn on whiskers, pirate hat and eyepatch. Sorted.
Despite the fact that ds refuses to let anyone read growltiger to him
Grizzle if your 3 yr old is partic small and you're north london I have a gruffalo costume you could have

Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs.

Child in normal clothes carrying a plastic bucket with plastic dinosaurs in.

Job done!

DD goes to a non-uniform school, and wants to be "The Naughtiest schoolgirl". So she is getting a navy uniform skirt, the cheapest shirt I could find (cream), an old tie of DH's and a navy cardi with yellow ribbon pinned to the edges.

Last year, I had to concoct Willy Wonka - reg clothes underneath a bright purple charity shop shirt that I cut off the front end and made the back into tails, a long stick with a knob on top, top hat from cereal box, and 2 "Golden Tickets". She loved it.

There were ALL sorts there. Lots of Cinderellas and Snow WHites (Disney costumes are useful for something). Bob the builder (x lots). Pirates (x lots and lots - bigger boys were fans of this look). A ballet costume (borrowed from a cousin). Various animals. Lots of face paint and imaginative use of Mum's good makeup!! Cardboard cut into all sorts of interesting hats, swords, covers. One roman emporer. A few Wally's. And most seemed to be relatively homemade rather than the Disney princesses.

herecomesthsun · 29/02/2012 14:21

I have contingency plans. We have
-a huge Lego pirate hat / cutlass / cloak

  • a Lego knight's tabard/ sword / shield/ crown (both off Ebay)
  • a shepherd's costume (+ sheep) - (sale)
  • a monkey costume (sale)
  • a fireman's helmet and a builder's yellow hat.

However, if fancy dress is planned, DS may choose not to wear his costume at the last moment. Conversely, he may choose to go to the supermarket in fancy dress....

Anniepops · 29/02/2012 14:29

Puss in boots? One of mum or dads shirts ( i.e. loose!) with wide belt round to give blousey tunic effect, wellies with doily round the top and a plastic sword from the pound shop/ toy box. Floppy hat if available and cavalier moustache courtesy of a blacy eyeliner pencil.

Gribble · 29/02/2012 14:35

ahh bless you Wimble but Im near Manchester, but thankyou so very much for the kind offer Smile

The horrid brown monstrosity I thought I had has gone missing, it might have made it into my last batch of charity shop donations gah! I havent even got anything pink to make the skin bit of a mouses ear.

Oh ffs, world book day sucks ass big time. Off for a Brew and a think....

piprabbit · 29/02/2012 14:39

We are reverse engineeering a WBD outfit.
DD has a pirate outfit, so I tracked down a book about a female pirate and made her read it over the weekend

Camerondiazepam · 29/02/2012 14:40

BiddyPop I love that on "dressing up" day your DD chooses to wear school uniform!

I sent my DS to nursery once dressed in ragged clothes and carrying a small bowl. "Please Sir, I want some more."

Gribble · 29/02/2012 14:50

I HAVE A FOX OUTFIT

Have found a furry fox waistcoat thing that he wore for a charity walk last year.

Fantastic Mr Fox it is. DS loves that book, he loves it so much its worn out and disintegrated into powder which I accidentally hoovered up so I dont actually have the hard copy anymore, but he loves it so much he doesnt need an actual copy, its all in his head but he confuses it with other books so couldnt tell you what its about apart from it has a fox in it your honor
