that he should come dressed as his favourite book character for world book day tomorrow?

How am I going to sort a costume this evening? (stealth request for ideas?)

He has a gruffalo costume but it's a bit small for him and inadvisable to wear for a day as he's newly out of nappies and would struggle to take it off...

Surely a bit of advance notice (ie last week) would have been sensible?

What is a tesco value bandage?
No chance of getting to anywhere to buy a proper costume as dh working late this evening (and this does not warrant a 1am trip to the 24 hour Sainsburys).
Trying to remember which Mr Men books we have at home (as he needs to take the book in too). Don't think we have Mr Strong. Are there any square brown ones? then I wouldn't even need to paint the box that I will retrieve from the recycling pile tonight

Dd once remembered at 7.15 that she had to be Charles 1 that day and we leave the house at 7.30. Don't come crying to me with your "it's such short notice!"

Dd told me at bedtime last night that she needed a costume for today, I heroically came up with/ put together Laura from Little house on the prairie, took her to school in long pinafore dress, pigtails and boots.....

It's tomorrow. And they're not doing dressing up at all this year.

upahill · 29/02/2012 11:25

What is a tesco value bandage?
A bandage from the Tesco range value range which is dirt cheap.
You know the bandages on a roll rather than I triangle bandage.

I bought a few to pop in my rucksac and they were as cheap as chips. A few of them round your DS and voila!! He is Mr Bump!!!

violathing · 29/02/2012 11:25

i am sending my DH as Bob the builder - hard hat , Jeans and a tool kit? best I can come up with.
No doubt it will be a competition with all the Mums and Dads with time and a creative mind coming up with something truly fab and making the rest of us look useless!!!

seeker · 29/02/2012 11:26

Actually it was easy- but I still dine out on my genius parenting skills!

upahill · 29/02/2012 11:27

I wouldn't cut up a white t shirt and loo paper falls apart in minutes ( I went to a Halloween party as a mummy once in loo paper!!)
The bandages were about 37p.

upahill · 29/02/2012 11:28

Violothing I did that !!!!
It's years since my kids were in nursery but yeah Bob was dead easy to do.
He was all the rage when mine were small so were check shirts on kids so that one didn't take much thought!!

Yeah I see what you mean Maryz.
I hate the thought of tearing anything up even if they are past their best!!!

nickelhasababy · 29/02/2012 11:45

The Gruffalo costume that's too small - is it too small lengthwise?

You could chop it into Top and bottom - sew elastic onto the top of the bottom (like trousers), or make some loops and put braces on.
then it'll be a bit longer in length, and he'll be able to take down the trousers...

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 29/02/2012 11:51

DD had her world book day today (to tie in with the nursery's Leap Day tea party) and went as Little Red Riding Hood. Could your DS go as Jack from Jack and the bean stalk? Or Hansel? Horrid Henry?

spiderlight · 29/02/2012 11:52

Very glad I'm in Wales - St David's day trumps World Book Day and I only have to iron a rugby shirt :o

M1ssBerta · 29/02/2012 11:58

Skeleton outfit from Halloween = Funny Bones.

hophophippidtyhop · 29/02/2012 12:18

pirate book. done

ScatterChasse · 29/02/2012 12:24

Noddy? Red top, blue shorts, and tie a duster round his neck (if you have time, draw/sew red dots on the duster first). If you have any face paints, do a red circle on each cheek in the morning.

He probably wouldn't leave the hat on all day, so don't bother, or just do a cone of blue paper with a yellow pompom on the end.

Animals are quite easy as well, just dress in brown/black with a tail, add whiskers and appropriately shaped ears (I was some variation on this theme for years. And for my Upper Sixth leaving do (jungle themed) and variously themed university parties Grin).

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/02/2012 12:31

A friend of mine sent her son as Wally, from Where's Wally - I think she had to knit him the bobble hat, but the rest was jeans and stripy t-shirt - and it was very effective. I think that year I sent ds2 in shorts, wellies and shirt, with a big umbrella (and told him to walk round saying, 'tut tut, looks like rain' all day).

Jacaqueen · 29/02/2012 12:32

My easy last minute costumes ideas for boys are:

Jack (Jack and the Beanstalk)- normal clothes, small yog pot with 5 counters/marbles/jellybeans etc. We also had a small Laughing Cow Beanie toy.

Charlie (Charlie and the Choc Factory)- normal clothes, bar of chocolate with label saying Wonka Bar, with 'golden ticket' inside. Or go as Grandpa Joe, wearing a night shirt, and singing 'I've got a golden ticket'.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/02/2012 12:34

Thankfully all mine are at senior school now, so there is very little in the way of costumed 'special days' - though ds1 did come home and tell me he needed to have a costume (his year were being vikings, I think) the next day, for the charity fun run. I said it was too little notice, and he wasn't really bothered. Ds2 had already organised and paid for his costume - a father christmas onsie from primark.

Jacaqueen · 29/02/2012 12:37

Both of those ideas won prizes.

The parents who had spent hours hand making special costumes and those who had spent a fortune buying outfits were rather annoyed.

Gribble · 29/02/2012 12:52

Im stuck aswell OP, mainly because his favourite book is the Gruffalo and there is no frigging way Im shelling out loadsamoney for a Gruffalo costume, and definitely no frigging way Im making one out of fake fur or whatever shite Id have to use soooooo DS (3) is going as Darth Vader tomorrow.

There are Star Wars books right?
