that putting clingfilm round a cot is the stupidest idea ever

My DP has tightly wound clingfilm through the bars of DS (4 months) cot, to stop him sticking out his arms and legs and getting them stuck. He'd previously had a bed sheet doing the job but it kept slipping down.
DS sleeps in the same room with just me and now I daren't leave him to sleep in his cot unless I am actually in the room watching and listening to make sure he's ok. He sleeps with me as soon as I go to bed. I am up at 4am, as DS wriggles too much and I disturb him equally as much with my own movements.
I told DP I wasn't comfortable with the clingfilm and he answered how DS was also his child and he wouldn't have put it there if it wasn't safe. (He is very precious over DS so this argument has weight).

But ffs it is a really stupid idea isn't it? (I've heard of Air Wrap cot bumper things btw - tried to tell him about them, wouldn't listen).

Erm yes it is beyond stupid.

It is the sort of idea my 5 year of would come up with.

If your baby nuzzles up to the bars, that film could be sucked over her nose and mouth with frightening ease.

KatAndKit · 28/02/2012 04:28

Cling film??????? WTF? That is ridiculous. If he was so "precious" he wouldn't do something so totally stupid. Why not wrap the cot in plastic bags that say "keep away from babies and children" on them?

Getting your hand between the bars is a lot less dangerous than suffocating in cling film.

Take it off. If you get any arguments about it phone a health visitor or someone else who can tell him that it is a dangerous and stupid idea.

SilentBoob · 28/02/2012 04:33

Now I've heard everything. Very, very foolish. Take it off immediately, and if he argues point out that ds is your child too.

FarAwayisBetter · 28/02/2012 04:33

Thank you, I know it's stupid! DS moves around a lot while sleeping, wouldn't take much to get his nose and mouth right up to the film and not be able to move away. Oh god, going to rip it off right now! Just needed to not doubt myself. Thank you ladies!

Done!

(If I had read this post by anyone else I would have screamed, how stupid are you woman? Of course it's a shit idea! DP was so adamant it was ok though. Just to make that clear).

OP posts:
peggyblackett · 28/02/2012 04:55

Glad you've removed it OP. It sounded incredibly dangerous.

jaggythistle · 28/02/2012 05:07

just order the Air wrap bumpers i reckon. they were really good for my wriggly DS, they stayed on his cot till he came out of it as he liked sleeping in odd positions!

your DH is beyond stupid by the way. i couldn't do enough Shock faces to express this.

runningwilde · 28/02/2012 06:07

If he has any doubt what a bad idea that was then show him this thread? Get HV to tell him too. I am aghast at the things some people do!

Iggly · 28/02/2012 06:15
Shock
samandi · 28/02/2012 06:21

Of course not, that's extremely stupid and dangerous.

Lueji · 28/02/2012 06:22

Bad, bad idea.

Even cot bumpers and pillows are not recommended

A much better idea are sleeping bags, although not much you can do about the arms, or to swaddle.

Guinnessisgoodforyou · 28/02/2012 06:48

Cots have had bars for years and years and years and I have never ever heard of anyone putting clingfilm around because the bars are dangerous. Madness.

SurroundedByPlasticCrap · 28/02/2012 06:49

Have you thought about using a travel cot, with soft sides?

MrsHerculePoirot · 28/02/2012 06:51

We used the air wrap thing and it was great.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 28/02/2012 06:51

Sorry but how stupid is your husband? Please be strong and next time he does something so moronic just say no.

gettingalifenow · 28/02/2012 06:52

Glad you've already taken it off, OP as I was about to say its the stupidest idea I've ever heard.

Bigger question is how to not have a row with your DH over this - I don't know how to help you on that other than to say that you don't want to be the first family reported in the newspaper for having a tragedy related to cling film.

Kayzr · 28/02/2012 06:54

I know you've taken off now but does your DP have any idea how dangerous that was? Your DS could have easily suffocated.

KatAndKit · 28/02/2012 07:09

The cot bars are actually a certain distance apart to meet safety standards. That's why we don't read of cot bar related accident - cots are designed to be safe for babies to sleep in!
The travel cot with soft sides might be a good idea if he remains blinkered about the cot bars. I agree he does need to be made aware of why his idea was dangerous.

charliesweb · 28/02/2012 07:15

I thought the reason cot bumpers were not recommend was because they increase the temperature in the cot and this may contribute to a risk of cot death. I would imagine you would have the same problem with cling film.

Shutupanddrive · 28/02/2012 07:24

Your DP is an idiot! Shock

AThingInYourLife · 28/02/2012 07:27

It's pretty worrying that someone stupid enough to put cling film around a cot is able to bully the child's mother into going along with it.

Being the baby's Dad doesn't give him the right to kill the baby through negligence.

recall · 28/02/2012 07:30

Take the cling film off, and put it over your DH's face !

blackeyedsusan · 28/02/2012 07:33

even sticking your leg through the bars and getting it stuck, for the 5th orr 6th time is nowhere near as stupid... and the leg sticking toddler has an excuse of being a toddler.. and lived to tell the tale with just a sore leg. (i am now expert at unsticking stuck legs. ) an accident with cling film might not have such a positive outcome... Sad

Dawndonna · 28/02/2012 07:48

I think your DP may need a little help from the Doctor, this is a bit OCD.

SharkBite · 28/02/2012 07:50

A grobag should stop the legs escaping.
