that putting clingfilm round a cot is the stupidest idea ever

My DP has tightly wound clingfilm through the bars of DS (4 months) cot, to stop him sticking out his arms and legs and getting them stuck. He'd previously had a bed sheet doing the job but it kept slipping down.
DS sleeps in the same room with just me and now I daren't leave him to sleep in his cot unless I am actually in the room watching and listening to make sure he's ok. He sleeps with me as soon as I go to bed. I am up at 4am, as DS wriggles too much and I disturb him equally as much with my own movements.
I told DP I wasn't comfortable with the clingfilm and he answered how DS was also his child and he wouldn't have put it there if it wasn't safe. (He is very precious over DS so this argument has weight).

But ffs it is a really stupid idea isn't it? (I've heard of Air Wrap cot bumper things btw - tried to tell him about them, wouldn't listen).

Thank you Cinnabar! and Betty

Most of the time I have nothing much of anything to say, and too much time on my hands!

CinnabarRed · 28/02/2012 09:26

Would have been better if I'd got your name right. Sorry. Blush

Mrsjay · 28/02/2012 09:29

Daft idea and really dangerous glad its been removed , your bbay wont really get a leg stuck , Just a question my babies are waaayy older why cant you use cot bumpers anymore ?

Mrsjay · 28/02/2012 09:29

baby*

TheFoosa · 28/02/2012 09:36

maybe you should wrap the baby in the cling film, not the head of course as that would be very stupid

KatAndKit · 28/02/2012 09:39

Or wrap the husband in cling film instead?

Bobyan · 28/02/2012 10:10

I'm not sure who is the more stupid, the DH who came up with the idea or the OP who felt the need to go on the internet to canvass opinions on it.

LetsKateWin · 28/02/2012 10:20

Lueji my DD trapped her arm in the cot by sticking it out through the bars and then in again, so it was wrapped around one of the bars. Luckily she cried when she couldn't move so I went in and freed her, but if she had moved suddenly she may have done herself some damage and then maybe I would have been under suspicion.

MonaLotte · 28/02/2012 10:30

I have the Air Wrap things to they are brilliant and also stop ds's dummies from falling out of the cot too!

RachelWalsh · 28/02/2012 10:32

YANBU - putting cling film round a cot is monumentally stupid.

hyperotreti · 28/02/2012 10:33

OP could you ask your HV to visit & discuss SIDS & general safety with your dp?

That is such an incredibly dangerous thing to do, I would seriously be questioning his ability to care for the baby at all :(

FarAwayisBetter · 28/02/2012 11:15

thank you for all the replies, i do feel very embarrased about this thread now. putting the clingfilm there was done with only the best intentions of course, but in hind sight.......jesus how stupid! And thank you for some of the lovely kind answers. my average nightly sleep is 3 hrs lately so it's hard to see the wood from the trees sometimes and i am not sure i can rely on my own instincts.

Sweet divine Jeebus, your OH is a moron. Take that off the cot and go and buy an air wrap.

Seriously, that is one of the most ridiculous solutions I've ever read. I'm Shock that you even let it on the cot.

MrsDollyLevi · 28/02/2012 14:51

God.... This is a tragedy waiting to happen. Your man needs Parentking Class 101. And quick!

verytellytubby · 28/02/2012 14:53

Jesus Christ.

Firawla · 28/02/2012 14:56

mrsjay one of mine shuffled himself backwards up the cot and got a bit tangled with the cot bumper, so i took it off. had never happened with my others but i think that kind of thing is why they recommend not to use them

GreenEyesAndHam · 28/02/2012 15:55

Yeah.... I think the OP kind of gets the idea now

GreenEyesAndHam · 28/02/2012 15:58

Right now I look a pillock for bumping the thread- that'll teach me not to wander off mid read

I overtake OP's DH in the stupidity stakes

Mrsjay · 28/02/2012 19:01

eeek Firawla that must been quite scary , I did take bumpers off when they started pulling them but i didnt realise they didnt recommend them anymore ,

griphook · 28/02/2012 19:08

don't worry about arm and legs sticking out the cot, I used to go find ds with limbs sticking out everywhere no damage has been done so far. Cot bumper and sleep positioners are really dangerous. The sids website has lots of info and reallt doesn't recommend them.

The reason for the bars is to allow air flow, even using a sheet wrapped around the bars could be dangerous

iFailedTheTuringTest · 28/02/2012 19:48

What griphook said

Lueji · 28/02/2012 19:57

Oh, DS got limbs through the bars all the time and in various positions. Never even a bruise.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/02/2012 20:00

This is making me feel quite sentimental for the days when I would find DD with her legs dangling out of the bars. Sleep sacks worked for us.

CuriousMama · 28/02/2012 20:01

I'm quite worried about you dp to be honest, this is very strange behaviour.
