Ok, so I'm the last person in the world to see the fiolm (last night) and I haven't read the books, but I enjoyed the (ludicrous) film. What does everyone hate so much? And why is it sexist?

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 12:04

OkayGrrl · 21/02/2012 12:05

I think she has blood when first born but because she grows really fast she is soon able to eat human food.

OkayGrrl · 21/02/2012 12:07

I do think you need to read the books if only for the shit and giggles.

LiamsMummyJaz · 21/02/2012 12:09

I meant isn't Angry

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 12:24

I genuinely think these are terrible (sorry to anyone who loves them!) Soggy, passive, Bella just seems to hang around limply, not questioning anything, not taking control of her own circumstances.

As has been said, Bella is terrible to be held up as a heroine. She's so passive and weak - it frightens me legions of young girls around the world have latched onto her "love" story and hold it up as a desirable thing.

It's not the genre and need for a suspension of disbelief. Much, much more fiesty, funny, and fierce are the Sookie Stackhouse novels (True Blood). She's sassy, doesn't take any crap from anyone, isn't afraid of nor gets swept away by the romance of the vampires.

I'm sick and tired of women being so passive in this genre. Waiting around to be taken away or bitten or changed or whatever. At least in the SS novels and TV series, the heroine fights back, is indignant at the arrogance of the vampire characters, refuses to be possessed or changed by them - she has a strong moral compass that is centric to her world view and is true to her actions. She actually has a personality as well, which is more than Bella ever had!

I would much prefer my (future) daughter to hold up the SS novels as her heroine than Bella :)

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 12:26

otter have you said that about your son saying that before - I laughed at 'tell your dad, he is a policeman'

As soon as that Bella moves in with her dad she starts cooking and 'looking after him'. The fucker had lived on his own for 16 years. Why does his daughter have to run round caring for him?

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 21/02/2012 12:27

How the hell are they going to do the uterus chomping scene when they film this?

LiamsMummyJaz · 21/02/2012 12:32

They've done it already!

DoUntoOtters · 21/02/2012 12:33

Blush I may have mentioned it, GetOrf. It was the last time the film was on telly.

He does get very cross about the whole Twilight thang. His view is that Edward makes it very clear that he is a monster, and he will hurt Bella, but then it will be all her fault because he has warned her. On the other hand, he says it's quite useful in sussing out potential girl-friends, ie, Twilight fan = probably not for him.

BertieBotts · 21/02/2012 12:36

Does her health visitor come around and write dubiously in the red book "Mother is feeding baby blood and intends to wean onto human food"?

(Human food thread!! Grin I hope someone else remembers this or I will look like a freak...)

Ahem. Sorry.

The reason for the hate is because Edward acts in the same way as an abuser does in the first stage of a relationship, using the same techniques to draw you in before the abuse starts.

Some people like to defend this because he is an animal/not human and so following instincts, but it's not like abusive men sit down with a notepad and plan their approach to trap women, it's just the way they think relationships are supposed to work. You still wouldn't want your best friend going out with one!

You don't need to read the books though, just read Mark Reads Twilight for the lulz.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 12:50

Your son sounds lovely, otters, it is actually really nice that he sees that.

DoUntoOtters · 21/02/2012 13:29

Thanks GetOrf, I think so. And I'm quite happy to take all the credit. Grin

nowittynamehere · 21/02/2012 13:34

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 13:46

Oh yes, a good boy is directly attributable to how he was raised by his mother. Grin

Bucharest · 21/02/2012 13:48

Absolutely. My friend who has boys taught them from toddlers that socks come off, always, and first.

nowittynamehere · 21/02/2012 13:50

Of course we should always take credi where credit is due , i find my daughters take their fathers bad traits Grin

DoUntoOtters · 21/02/2012 13:55

I find that a lot of the less desirable character traits will skip a generation. That way, blame can be laid firmly at the Grand-parents' doors.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 13:57
Grin

Yes - when dd is good 'oh you are just like me'

When she is bad 'that is just the kind of thing nanny would say'

Smellslikecatspee · 21/02/2012 16:40
