Ok, so I'm the last person in the world to see the fiolm (last night) and I haven't read the books, but I enjoyed the (ludicrous) film. What does everyone hate so much? And why is it sexist?

Getorf turns around and looks crossly at hully with her piercing green eyes.

'how dare you' she stormed. And as quick as a flash she whips out her wand and shouts 'avada kedavra', and watches avidly as hully falls slowly to the ground...

OkayGrrl · 21/02/2012 11:37

But Hullygully it isn't great love, it's weird obsessive lust

Mrskbpw · 21/02/2012 11:37

I've not seen the film, and I've only read the first book, but I thought it was rubbish. Aside from the glaring sexism and Bella being the worst heroine ever, the vampires are really boring because they've got no weaknesses.

All the traditional vampire stuff is re-written (they're fine in sunlight, I'm assuming from the fact Edward creeps about watching Bella at night that they don't need to be invited in, they go to an Italian restaurant so obviously garlic is okay too, etc etc) and they can do anything - drive faster than a plane. Run faster than a car. Change how people are feeling. Read people's minds. It means they're never in peril and also means that if Van Helsing turned up (please tell me he turns up in book 2?) he'd have no chance. If you're creating a world where normal rules apply, then you need to write new rules, otherwise it's just not plausible.

Bram Stoker will be spinning in his grave. Spinning, I tell you.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 11:38

It isn't love.

It is mutual obsession and control/submission.

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:39

no no

it is GREAT LOVE

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:40

I have to say I don't understand why she doesn't become a vampire, then they can be together all the time and she doesn't have to worry about the other vampires. I would, if I was her.

She does become a "vampire" and they have a baby who Jacob falls in love with.

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:42

WHEN YOU WERE 9

9

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 11:42

If she did that in book one then that would mean that dirges books 2, 3 and 4 would never have come into being Grin

You need to read book 4, if only to laugh loudly at the WORST invented name of all time, the sheer bonkersness of what goes on, and the anti-climatic ending.

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:43

Oh good. Isn't Jacob a bit old to be in love with their baby? Are there paedos in vampire land?

OP posts:
nowittynamehere · 21/02/2012 11:43

Oh and Edward jumps in her window to watch her sleep HOW IS THAT NOT CREEPY !! if a teen boy came anywhere near my daughters to watch them sleep id be seeing them off with a clip around the ear

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:43

How do they have a baby? How is that possible? Ed's sperm is like a gazillion years old, imagine the genetic malformation potential.

OP posts:
nowittynamehere · 21/02/2012 11:44

9 doesnt make me feel anybetter liams mummy Grin

nowittynamehere · 21/02/2012 11:44

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:44

I do sort of get the twislut thing a bit now tho, I would like to be carried up trees and the like.

OP posts:
OkayGrrl · 21/02/2012 11:45

Yes he literally loves their baby

OkayGrrl · 21/02/2012 11:46

I know it makes no sense! But that doesn't matter in Twilight land.

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:46

what? WHEN IT'S A BABY?

OP posts:
TheVeryTiredKnid · 21/02/2012 11:46

I don't think Stephanie Meier is too worried about genetic details, Hully. She also thinks Brazil has a west coast. :)

differentnameforthis · 21/02/2012 11:47

My main gripe is the way they portray Bella, as a wimpy. clumsy woman who needs a man in her life to feel whole. The whole part when sparkly man exits her life & she takes to her bed is ridiculous. Then she gets over him, only because she gets with the other guy, who she dumps as soon as she realises sparkly man is in danger (killing himself because he thinks she is dead).

And the way that the woman is with the (wolf? dog?) who attacked her, because he wasn't himself & isn't normally like that!

Hmm
Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:47

Like east of Java

I might have to read them I can see.

OP posts:
nowittynamehere · 21/02/2012 11:48

I think Stephanie meier is just a bit emo tbh Grin

TroublesomeEx · 21/02/2012 11:49

I haven't read the books.

I haven't seen the film(s?)

Largely because I could do without falling hopelessly in love with Robert Pattinson.

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:50

He's a bit plae and he has lipstick.

He's pretty when he's sparkling.
