Ok, so I'm the last person in the world to see the fiolm (last night) and I haven't read the books, but I enjoyed the (ludicrous) film. What does everyone hate so much? And why is it sexist?

No he AINT Grin

GrownUp2012 · 21/02/2012 11:15

Me either. I read the first book and it sort of made no real impression other than being in a genre I tend to read. I bought it out of desperation when I had nothing else to read. It was okay in that I bought another one, but I never did read all of them until they started making them into films. This excited me because it's not often I get to see my genres of choice turn into films. It was okay, not perfect, in the cinema, but when it turned into masses of teenage frothing I got put off. Not before I read the full series in proper order again, and still didn't really get the hysteria.

But it's all good in a way, they are starting to do the same thing with other, much better, series in my genres of choice. I cannot wait to see Hunger Games next month for example. If it opens up the world to what I like and makes it more accessible to me, I guess I am not complaining. Unless they also put prices up... in which case step away from the trashy and flashy fantasy novels world and leave them to me!

Wasn't impressed with Dan Brown when I read The Da Vinci Code. Started of ok but he really lost it from the middle on and I couldn't wait to be shot of the book.

Barbara Cartland was a prolific, famous writer, doesn't mean she was good.

LiamsMummyJaz · 21/02/2012 11:16

That's your opinion Grin

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 11:17

The way Da VincI code was all bloke's internal monologue written in italics and thrilling plot denouments at the end of the each chapter written in a DUH DUH DUUUUUUUUUUUH cliffhanger stylee.

It's like Enid Blyton for adukts - formulaic crap.

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:17

getorf - tell me about the misogyny

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 11:18

Not to say that is a bad thing - I like rollicking crappy reads.

But I don't think they are great writers, tbh.

OkayGrrl · 21/02/2012 11:18

The books are rubbish and the films aren't much better, and I don't get the love for Edward he's very creepy and not in a cool way.

LiamsMummyJaz · 21/02/2012 11:18

Getorf - like I said YOUR opinion. Thousands would disagree.

LiamsMummyJaz · 21/02/2012 11:20

Tbh we will never all agree. I think Cathrine Cookson is a bit pants but my nan loves her Grin

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 11:20

Someone linked to this in a thread a couple of months back hully www.guardian.co.uk/film/2008/dec/04/twilight-film-vampire - sums it up well.

You should hear SGB (iirc - I think it was her, someone ranty anyway) on the subject.

TheVeryTiredKnid · 21/02/2012 11:20

Have a look at this, Hully. Grin

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 11:20

Yes I know it's opinion you're all wrong though

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 11:20

only joking btw liam

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 11:22

My dd used to love bastarding Tracey Beaker books when she was little. I bloody hated them.

Mind you one of my guilty pleasures is Lace by Shirley Conran - and that is a steaming pile o'shite. So what do I know. Grin

pigsinmud · 21/02/2012 11:24

I quite liked film and book. Read the book quickly and I am a lazy reader now. I thought the book was much better written than bloody Harry Potter - reading that to to my girls at the moment and it is driving me crazy....Hermione stood up quickly and looked at Harry awkwardly. "Hurry up" she shouted anxiously. Too many adverbs in those books.

LiamsMummyJaz · 21/02/2012 11:26

getorf I've never read that but I was quite partial to Tracey beaker lol. I used to quite like her books! (not that long ago really)Grin

LiamsMummyJaz · 21/02/2012 11:29

schilke I started reading HP when I was 7 so the first few books suited how old
I was. The older harry gets the better the books become. Not a fan of the films though Sad

GetOrfMoiiLand · 21/02/2012 11:29

Grin at JK Rowling. That is so true.

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:30

I love Harry Potter and I feel very defensive about adverbs. Adverbs are goodly little chaps and much underrated.

OP posts:
pigsinmud · 21/02/2012 11:30

LiamsMummyJaz - Oh god I feel old now that you were 7 when HP book came out!

pigsinmud · 21/02/2012 11:31

Sorry Hullygully - there were just too many of them for my liking - she said crossly.

My ds2 loves adverbs too.

OkayGrrl · 21/02/2012 11:31

lTwilight comic

Twilight comic number 2

LiamsMummyJaz · 21/02/2012 11:32

No!! Not 7! My bad! I meant 9! My nan brought it for me at the airport on the way to spain in the summer holidays Smile

Hullygully · 21/02/2012 11:33

Hmmm I might not read the books then, I get the feeling they will spoil the fillums.

Isn't it just about a great great LOVE
