After a discussion at work which actually started about a childs' dress (day nursery) leading onto the duggars and then religion, it came clear to me that several of my work colleagues do not believe in evolution and not only that but also dinosaurs not existing Shock

Now i can understand the more religious people not believing as Evolution and adam and eve clash, but for those who were not religious how can you not believe in Evolution. Its proven.

I mean really how can people not believe in Evolution or dinosaurs.

I quote one of my work colleagues 'well there's lots of dinosaur toys so they must have been real' .... WTAF?

Please tell MN that you believe in Evolution, and dinosaurs ......

If you believe in inherited characteristics then evolution is logically necessary and indeed a truism - heritable characteristics which tend to increase survival or reproduction will tend to increase. Evolution as the full explanation of speciation from a standing start of a bunch of inorganic chemicals is a hell of a stretch though - I do believe it but it's a big ask and I can understand why people struggle.

I think the biggest problem I have with the theory that god left the dinosaur bones, is that god is pretend.

Lifeisquiteabsurd · 19/02/2012 22:33

As you mentioned the Duggars here is the video of them visiting that great font of scientific knowledge -

Apparently dinosaurs did exist and lived happily alongside humans. We even rode them like horses. Hmm

we can TSC. We evolved to be able to build aeroplanes and all sorts of things. We evolved to the point where we can adpat our environment to suit are needs rather than just adapting to suit the needs of our environment.

catgirl1976 · 19/02/2012 22:37

*our needs

Lueji · 19/02/2012 22:37

DilysPrice

It is indeed quite hard to grasp how life itself originated, but mainly because complex organisms have taken over and will eat up any emerging organic molecules.

If we analyse the DNA of all living species it is very similar and it has basically the same genetic code, indicating a common origin.

True, it could be via God's actions. But why would he bother, if his hand was not necessary elsewhere?
Organic molecules can arise naturally.

I believe in natural selection, but not necessarily evolution, what good is half an eye for example. and i'm not sure if i believe in God either. God and evolution there seems to be a few holes in the arguments for both of them.

CrunchyFrog · 19/02/2012 22:42

Music makes an immense amount of sense in line with evolutionary theory.

We are a species who perceives patterns, even when there aren't any there. Music is just pattern, as is speech and language. All part of the same stuff.

I've worked with people with very severe brain damage who can still respond to music. It's primal. And I've looked at brain scans of people listening to music - rhythm is lizard brain stuff.

We're just monkeys in shoes. Grin

wheredidyoulastseeit · 19/02/2012 22:42

Also evolution was always ok with the church until recently, after all Charles Darwin is buried in Westminster Cathedral as a reward for his good work and theories.

wheredidyoulastseeit · 19/02/2012 22:43

Meant Westminster Abbey

Lueji · 19/02/2012 22:43

If we could fly our brain would not have evolved as much as it did.

We needed to free our jaws, essentially, and for that we needed hands, with opposable thumbs.

Ah, and just because our brain developed so much, it doesn't mean we evolved more than other species.
We just have larger brains. Once cultural evolution took over, then it did accelerate, but just culturally, and that took thousands of years too.
We have only really evolved technically when our culture was not subjugated to religion. Hmm

cookielove · 19/02/2012 22:44

catgirl1976 i seem to be struggling with the same issues.

wheredidyoulast, I really recommend Why Evolution Is True - great book.

went to Grand Canyon. The tour guide started telling us how this was made by the "Great Flood"..

DilysPrice · 19/02/2012 22:48

Evolution is just fine with the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Pope - the misconception that good Christians have to be creationists is just as annoying to them as it is to me - I do slightly blame Dawkins for its taking hold in the UK.
