Vaguely know a lady from a slimming class and bumped into her yesterday in supermarket.

Made the mistake of saying hello, how are you and then the floodgates opened up - that her benefits had been stopped and she was waiting for a doctors letter to be sent to office to see if they would be reinstated. How did they expect her to survive on just housing benefit and child benefit and how she had to borrow £50 to do the shopping, her son needed new shoes and on and on and on...

I said well, it is understandable that if certain claimants are using a bad back as an excuse and they are roofing on the side then it is right that they are being assessed, to which she replied that she had a bad back and was being assessed, how she couldn't walk far etc etc and yet was quite happily carrying a basket and swinging it around!!!

I am very black and white re benefits and think you have to be incapacitated to receive them and not just have a bad back occasionally but that could open up a whole other thread!!!

Anyway, politely said hope it all gets sorted but was actually thinking, if you can afford a pet, run a car and pay for a weekly slimming class you are not in dire straights and perhaps should think about looking for some paid employment instead of bitching about your benefits being stopped.

yeah ok Hmm depends on how far she was swinging the basket?

Gumby · 18/02/2012 14:18

Perhaps she's trying to lose weigh to help her back?

I don't know. I have a bad knee (still work, not claiming anything) which can be absolute agony and other times be fine.

They're already assessing her, so it is being looked at.

Pickgo · 18/02/2012 14:21

Are you a dr OP?

Have you done a recent medical assessment of your friend?

Thought not. Then you are in no position to judge really are you?

AKissIsNotAContract · 18/02/2012 14:22

Er what does this have to do with being hypocritcal?

SuePurblybilt · 18/02/2012 14:23

When you said hypocritical, did you actually mean judgemental and unpleasant?
Tricky things, words.

TwoStepsBack · 18/02/2012 14:26

Vaguely know a lady

I think you should have stopped your post there.

Lexie1970 · 18/02/2012 14:27

no - not a dr and no not done a medical assessment - if you read the post I don't portray myself as either.

I am not judging, I have an opinion.

As a person who has worked, paid taxes I believe benefits are not a lifestyle they should be there as a safety net and I believe that you should be continually assessesed to see if they are still required. Hence the question am I being hypocritical Akiss

BupcakesandCunting · 18/02/2012 14:29

desperatenotstupid · 18/02/2012 14:31

Lueji · 18/02/2012 14:33

Swimming is reccommended for bad backs.

FuckUAndTheHorseURodeInOn · 18/02/2012 14:33

Aren't folk bored with starting these shite threads yet?

nenevomito · 18/02/2012 14:34
Shock

Well I bet that if her doctor saw her swinging that basket she'd have something to say as everyone knows that basket swinging is one of the key indicators of a good back.

And as for the slimming class Shock how could she claim poverty when she's trying to lose weight with assistance.

What a scrounger! Thank god we have people out there who are able to judge people they barely know without any detailed knowlegde of someone's medical history.

TheVeryTiredKnid · 18/02/2012 14:34

What exactly do you mean by hypocritical?

Are you claiming benefits for a bad back too?

SuePurblybilt · 18/02/2012 14:36

'I am not judging'

Erm, yes. You are.

SuePurblybilt · 18/02/2012 14:37

And it's still not hypocritical unless you hold these opinions but are claiming for a bad back yourself. See - tricky things.

blackoutthesun · 18/02/2012 14:39

i bet you work for atos op

LilacWaltz · 18/02/2012 14:41

Lexie it's none of your business .... Maybe her back problem means her car is a mobility car? Maybe her doc has told her to lose weight to help her back????Given her a free slimming club prescription?

grubbalo · 18/02/2012 14:41

What a good way to assess fraud on incapacity benefit, send someone down to Asda and see how many of the bastards a) use a basket and b) swing it. Would save loads of hassle.

YABU OP

woollyideas · 18/02/2012 14:42

I'm sure someone will be along to agree with you soon, dearie.

Meanwhile, have one of these: Biscuit

BlueFergie · 18/02/2012 14:44

I think OP may have meant. She was hypocritical because she said she hoped it get sorted when she hopes no such thing. In fact it seems she hopes that this women gets caught as the basket carrying scrounger she clearly feels she is. Is that correct OP? You seem very pleasent. Hmm

grubbalo · 18/02/2012 14:46

BlueFergie, get your facts right. Basket swinging scrounger dontcha know.
