to expect people to know there is lactose in breastmilk

I was talking to a woman I know, a very intelligent, highly educated breastfeeding mother, and she commented that she did not want to give her DS formula because she didn't want him to have any lactose. AIBU to be utterly shocked that she didn't seem to know that lactose is the carbohydrate found in milk, and therefore the carbohydrate found in human breastmilk?
Please tell me most people are not so unaware.

I don't find that knowing/not knowing what lactose actually is has any bearing on managing to operate my body correctly Hmm

Me neither. I've never heard it come up on a quiz either, another reason not to see it as common knowledge.

Fair enough. I did say that I had thought that, but that having read this thread perhaps I was wrong :) I find physiology/chemistry really interesting and just pick a lot of it up, so probably assume everyone does.

And also, so many people talk about lactose intolerance these days. That's probably why I thought more people would know what it was.

I think a lot of people think they are lctose intolerant as htey have no idea what lactose is and have just heard cows milk = bad
