or perhaps Am I normal?

I was recently Irene Adler walking seductively through London, being all mysterious and red-of-nail. Last night as I poured my chardonnay I was Bridget Jones. I'm often the posh lady who very nearly gets the better of Poirot, but doesn't quite and has a "damn you" moment. In my youth I was rather obsessed with Quantum Leap - I regularly leapt into my own body to somehow save a life / a business / the world.

Externally, I'm just an accountant with a happy homelife. Internally, I'm anything I bloody like.

Normal? Come on, I can take it. I've been a Russian spy with homicidal tendancies. In Asda.

*I created the Beyonce Booty Bounce.

Angiefernackerpan · 12/02/2012 11:40

I once ran into my bedroom giggling at a clever joke I made IN MY HEAD TO FICTIONAL PEOPLE, and my sister asked me what was so funny. I didn't even know I was laughing.

Sometimes I wonder about me...

GreenEyesAndHam · 12/02/2012 11:51

I was the first female England football team manager. The one who got them to world cup victory.

I know jack shit about football

The Olympics is going to be some rich pickings for me, I can tell you

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 12/02/2012 11:59

This thread has got me remembering all my past lives! When I was at school, during particularly boring Maths/Science lessons I would drift off to the snowy streets of Moscow, where I was the latest pupil of the Bolshoi (yes, I now know it's not in Moscow) and Mikhail Baryshnikov was my mentor. He was obviously enraptured with my talent and also slightly in love with me, but our love was forbidden because of the age gap.

Luckily, back at home (during my holiday's from the Bolshoi) I had Damon Albarn waiting for me and I would do the festivals with them, being all Kate-Moss-esque and rock-chicky, before waving Damo a sad farewell and returning to my snow-bound ballet life.

^if only I had put so much effort into my Maths/Science, maybe I wouldn't have failed my GCSE in both and had to resit aged 25 and less of a daydreamer

rarebreed · 12/02/2012 12:17

OH GOD i do this too, not tv shows though, when i'm alone i become Ginger Rogers or Ella Fitzgerald or Amy Winehouse..elaborate performances in front of the mirror Blush

I'm getting married later this year and have spent a lot of time planning the elaborate fox trot DP and I will do to a Sinatra number for our first dance. In reality DP has two left feet and will just stagger sway nicely.

Honestly, the hours i've wasted being in 1940s/50s Las Vegas Blush

Francagoestohollywood · 12/02/2012 12:25

Icebergahoy that is a good plan, actually, but how do you manage to convince Snape it is time to stop mourning the past? Somehow he looks like someone who is impossible to convince (which is what makes him so wonderful Blush)

Francagoestohollywood · 12/02/2012 12:29

BrianCox, I also dreamt about dancing with Baryshnikov, this was before his Petrosky - "My little house in Santorini" role.

And I also had a meaningful relationship with Damon Albarn. And River Phoenix, actually I married him, with flowers in my hair.

icebergahoy · 12/02/2012 13:06

Aha Fran, after I secretly saved Snape's life following Nagini's attack (but after he had given his memories to Harry) he accepted that it was time to move on, plus I am completely irresistible!

Disclaimer, this one does date back to 2007 when I had slightly more time on my hands Grin....

I blame being a papergirl in my teens for my graphic imagination, so many boring hours to fill as I trudged about in the dark.

theodorakis · 12/02/2012 13:08

I am often a character in Mallory Towers, usually Darrell or Sally but sometimes Miss Grayling, gracious and wise.

Popbiscuit · 12/02/2012 13:38

Me too, theo. Sometimes I'm sensible, hot-tempered Darryl and other times I'm Alicia of the rapier wit. I frequently channel Miss Grayling when dispensing motivational advice to my children.

Francagoestohollywood · 12/02/2012 14:09

Oh very good plan Iceberg

AsdaFudgeyCal · 12/02/2012 14:11

I am stupidly happy to know I am not alone!

I am either a highly successful, young, hot, highly acclaimed (but amazingly down-to-earth) songwriter/director with a torrid love life. Me and Joaquin Phoenix have been on and off for the last 12 years, but recently Alexander Skarsgaard has come on the scene Wink

Or I'm a character in LOTR/ ER etc. Never a pre-existing character, I write my own part. But I'm not an actress in the programme, the programme is real, obvs!

I like my fantasy life and think it's quite healthy to have somewhere happy to retreat to. I tend to neglect it when I'm happy IRL but come back to my happy places when thinks aren't so great.

I would NEVER confess this to my RL friends, I just know they would NOT understand!

LetUsPrey · 12/02/2012 14:27

I totally do this too. All recent imaginings have involved the lush Benedict Cumberbatch. We meet at a party hosted by a very dear friend of mine. We instantly hit it off because I'm fascinating and different to the other shallow people there. I'm usually something like a scientist type person so am fabulously clever, particularly in the field of astronomy. We wander off into the extensive gardens together ....

Sometimes I'm trekking through jungles with Steve Backshall as his assistant producer. We don't get on at first but then he confesses his uncontrollable desire for me.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 12/02/2012 14:37

I am also Elizabeth Bennett, especially around stately homes etc.

I am very often my favourite characters from Jilly Cooper novels Blush

I need more time alone to do this, when I used to bus it to work I had 2 hours a day, now it's a snatched half hour here and there.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 12/02/2012 14:38

Oh and Joan from Mad Men.

themightyfandango · 12/02/2012 14:47

Not read the whole thread but have we reached a conclusion that this is normal or is it the weird past time of a small selection of the population who possibly have issues ?

For the record I have done this since being a young child where I spent most of my time being Fallon from Dynasty I never got the impression my friends did this sort of thing but maybe I am wrong.

These days I am usually either a nobel winning scientist or award winning writer. The scenarios and love interests vary according to mood and current crush.

I agree with the poster who said they do it more when they are having a tough time IRL. How much time I spend in a fantasy world is a good gauge of my mental state. Better than drugs or drink I suppose Grin

icebergahoy · 12/02/2012 15:05

Mightyfandango Despite a complete lack of empirical evidence, I think we've reached the conclusion that being able to flit between RL and fantasy at will is a useful strategy for coping with stress, unhappy times and boredom; and that those who don't or can't do it should be incredibly jealous of us weirdos.

learningtofly · 12/02/2012 15:11

Thank goodness I thought I was a bit strange! I'm often in a play/film/music video. Makes the day seem so much brighter :)

lucjam · 12/02/2012 15:24

Totally normal to me. A lot of the times I cook I'm doing it on Blue Peter. Yesterday I was making a victoria sponge on the great british bake off, sexy Paul was worried I was going to split the mix when I added the eggs.

Not been on Masterchef yet, maybe tonight?

Sometimes am on Dancing on Ice when I'm skidding on polished wooden floor in my bedroom!

Fecklessdizzy · 12/02/2012 15:36

Hurrah! I thought it was just me that lived several lives simultaniously! Grin

At the moment I'm at work and also hanging out of a tree in Sherwood with various fit outlaw types admiring my arse shooting.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 12/02/2012 15:41

D'ya know what occurred to me as I was wandering around B&Q this afternoon.

Well, all these films and books and plays and songs - they all come from somebody sitting in a daydream of sorts, don't they.

So, surely, we're all completely normal and undiscovered playwrights / song writers / directors etc etc.

hopefull?

LetUsPrey · 12/02/2012 15:53

I'm often a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. I partner Ian Waite and am - of course - a naturally gifted dancer and perform fabulously.

themightyfandango · 12/02/2012 15:56

Probably true BrianCox. I am a writer of sorts IRL, just not the amazing one that inhabits my daydreams. Maybe one day....at least I will be prepared for the stardom Wink

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 12/02/2012 16:01

coming in to this thread a little late,
I am very often staring in a film of my life, with sound track etc.

If a song is playing I feel myself questioning the directors choice of music for this scene.

NorthernWreck · 12/02/2012 18:51

Well, yeah Brian, only trouble is that in order to be a great undiscovered songwriter or paywright you have to actually sit down and write a song or a play...
