I'm increasingly struggling with the wisdom of prohibiting drugs and this is increased by a suspicion that far more people have taken or take drugs than are ever willing to admit it. I am thus curious as to MNetters experiences.

I was an adult when I started taking illegal drugs - so if my DD's were over 21 then I would rather they smoked weed than drank alcohol. With regards to other drugs as long as they know their limits and how to take drugs safely and trusted their source I would not have a problem with that.

LittleTyga · 11/02/2012 01:07

I have an 'addictive' personality which is why I didn't take addictive drugs such as cigarettes, alcohol and heroin. I knew by how much chocolate I ate that I had an addictive personality!

LittleTyga · 11/02/2012 01:09

Coke makes you aggressive? really? no one I know that does coke has been aggressive? drunks are aggressive!

BustersOfDoom · 11/02/2012 01:10

I smoked the odd joint in my teens but it just made me feel sleepy so I just wasn't interested. I wanted to go out and have a laugh, not nod off.

Some friends of mine came to a party we had at our house and offered me what I thought was just a normal joint. I had a drag but wish I hadn't as it was skunk. It felt like my entire body had stopped working and my evening ended then. I had to go to bed at abbout 9pm. They must have been so hardened to it as they used to smoke it morning, noon and night. One bloody drag and I was incapacitated! That stuff is scary shit!

Mermaidspam · 11/02/2012 01:12

Another no here.

Always been very anti drugs. Leah Betts died when I was around 14 and it always stuck with me.

My cousin died after taking Mephedrone in January, I hope that the only good thing to come from his death will be for dd to be as anti-drugs as I am.

Birdsgottafly · 11/02/2012 01:18

It isn't Cocaine that makes you aggresive it is what it is mixed with. Whatever they are flooding liverpool (and the North) with, is causing all of the violence in the pubs and has been for about 6 years.

FreudianSlipper · 11/02/2012 01:22

i said can make some aggressive and with drink added to the mix. it is a fine line between the buzz of extra confidence to being over confident, arrogant and with others feeling the same way things can turn aggressive quite easily have seen it many times (though only with men)

Birdsgottafly · 11/02/2012 01:31

Frued- i was answering Little,i have seen women get involved with fights which is down to Coke use. Also they are less likely to split up fights or try to calm things down, as they used to. It isn't great to be around kids the next day either.

The use of Coke has damaged a lot of the pubs in Liverpool more than the smoking ban.

juneybean · 11/02/2012 01:33

I've not taken any illegal drugs.

But yes I have taken codeine and anything else that might have been injected into me during hospital visits.

Birdsgottafly · 11/02/2012 01:33

I think the amount of usage especialy in the over 30's, as first time and continual, has been well hidden.

Drug use does contribute to crime, even if it is behind doors, as in DV. The police don't drug test those they arrest, so tbh, they don't know what is drugs or drink related.

FreudianSlipper · 11/02/2012 01:40

i do not tend to mix with people who take coke anymore or if they do just a small amount. i have seen the most laid back guys turn quite aggressive it is a very dangerous drug you can still function fine while taking it that is the problem you can not see what an obnoxious twat you are (sometimes) being all the time you think you are great

Moodykat · 11/02/2012 01:46

I've tried most drugs. Some I enjoyed, some I didn't. I only "do" nicotine now. I know of only 1 person amongst my friends and immediate family that has never done any illegal drugs. My BILs mother revealed that herself and a few of her friends from the WI smoke weed.
I think the arguments for legalising drugs are compelling but must admit that my opinions basically mirror Nick Hornby's High Society!

CheerfulYank · 11/02/2012 02:21

I've only ever done pot. I love it, really, and if I wasn't worried about what a drug charge would do to my ability to work with children, I'd probably do it more often. I've seen alcohol destroy a lot more lives, to be honest.

AlpinePony · 11/02/2012 02:23

Yanbu.

I went to a naice school and did an informal survey at the end of 5th year. Of 120, over 60 had 'dabbled' with at least cannabis.

Smurfy1 · 11/02/2012 02:24

Nicotine and Alcohol only for me, and gave up fags 7.5 yrs ago and only drink Wine now, due to me being scared of turning into my mother

EttiKetti · 11/02/2012 04:31

It's 20+ years ago but yes, late teens and early 20s I had a go at speed, ecstasy, coke, lots of pot.

I still know lots of pot heads and if that stuff doesn't kill brain cells, Rizla must!!

alessthandomesticgoddess · 11/02/2012 04:43

I experimented a little when I was in my teens. I did a few pills (I'm not sure if any of them were the 'big' pill names), some marijuana and one line of cocaine. I've never done anything harder like heroin but I know those who have. I smoke and have done since I was fourteen.

I don't think everyone has. I know lots of people who have never tried a cigarette let alone something harder but then I know some people who do drugs but not cigarettes. Different strokes for different folks.

mathanxiety · 11/02/2012 04:52

Never anything illegal or nicotine, but alcohol - yes.

I am all for the legalisation of drugs though. ExFil was a doctor and saw a lot of the side effects of the illegal drug trade in the operating theatre (in the US; gang warfare led to a lot of neurosurgery). It would also mean a lot of people home from prison and less blank spaces in CVs due to incarceration for drug possession, so better employment chances. Criminalising drug possession and use is as silly as Prohibition.

LtEveDallas · 11/02/2012 06:01

No, never have, neither has my DH nor most of my friends.

But then we are subject to compulsory drug testing and could lose our jobs, homes and career. I believe more vocations should be subject to CDT.

My brother was a drug user. It killed him, destroyed my parents and tore my family apart. 16 years on and we are still suffering the fallout.

I would not legalise drugs.

TheUnsinkableTitanic · 11/02/2012 06:39

never

lesley33 · 11/02/2012 06:46

tbh I think people who tend to take drugs socialise with others who tend to take drugs. I'm not talking about heavy drug users, but about ordinary people who use drugs recreationally. And I think that skews people's views about the number of people who take drugs.

For example, ex bf took drugs recreationally as did all his friends - except me. He would say nearly everyone tried or took drugs because that was his experience. But before i went out with him and since, I know hardly anyone who takes drugs recreationally and not many people who have even tried them. And many have been embarassed to admit this - so I don't think they are lying.

nooka · 11/02/2012 07:06

I don't think that anyone is that likely to have a good knowledge of whether or not the people they know have taken or are taking drugs simply because of the illegality (unless they are partaking together). It's not after all something that most people are very comfortable talking about because it is illegal. I live in British Columbia where a huge amount of pot is grown (mainly for export into the States). It's also available legally on prescription. I think the latest research has shown that about 15% of people smoke weed regularly, but it took three years before I discovered that quite a few of my friends did as they weren't sure how I would react.

My view is that the government's stance on drugs does not work and is very contradictory. If you want drugs it is not at all hard to get them, so I don't think that legalization would increase use, especially as it would obviously be regulated (and taxed).

lesley33 · 11/02/2012 07:14

tbh I think it would increase use.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 11/02/2012 07:21

Have never even taken a drag in a cigarette...

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 11/02/2012 07:23

Or on one
