I'm increasingly struggling with the wisdom of prohibiting drugs and this is increased by a suspicion that far more people have taken or take drugs than are ever willing to admit it. I am thus curious as to MNetters experiences.

Iv done weed.
And iv done 3 lines of coke.

willybreeder · 17/02/2012 21:17

I've tried nearly everything and still enjoy my favourites! I feel fortunate that I can treat it like having a drink, so just enjoy it when I want to instead of it getting under my skin where I feel I have to have it.

M0naLisa · 17/02/2012 21:55

I had never tried coke until a month or so ago. We went to a house party and it was been offered out, DH had some and then i tried it and i have to say i enjoyed it BUT i wouldnt make a habit of it. Im 26 not 16!!

Never intentionally - though was once spiked, which was the oddest feeling and a most worrying experience.

I couldn't understand why I was suddenly feeling the way I was - I never found out who did it or why, but was always much more circumspect in my choice of friends and guarding my drink afterwards.

Errrrm pills are back like they used to be, back to being £10 too.... So I heard.....

HappyCamel · 18/02/2012 10:38

Never and ive never smoked either. I figured if I tried and didn't like it I hadn't gained anything and if I did like it, it would cost a fortune and could kill me. I couldn't see an upside.

Ha! Have said similar to DP when him and one of our friends go to a techno festival every year. I couldn't give a flying fuck what he gets up to, but it can't be many more years before he is "that bloke", the old codger that the youngens either pity a bit or just assume is an old perv Wink

LittleWhiteWolf · 18/02/2012 10:47

I never have, nor has my DH. Neither of us have ever smoked and we very rarely drink. Probably a glass of champagne at Christmas and that's about it.
Personally I think drugs should remain illegal and that alcohol selling should be more strictly monitored (not sold in off licences or supermarkets for a start) so I know I have some unpopular opinions on the matter!

I used to feel more lenient towards drugs until 5 years ago when I started at my current job in an adult male prison. Of course its ridiculous to say "taking drugs and/or drinking to excess will make you a criminal/lead you down a path of criminal behaviour", but its hard NOT to blame drugs and alcohol in a large part for many criminal activities in our society.

Tiptoptoe · 18/02/2012 10:57

No I have never touched anything other than alcohol. My DH smoked marijuana as a teen but never tried anything stronger.

Solo · 18/02/2012 12:47

LittleWhiteWolf me too re job, but I started in the mid 90's, currently on a career break and dread returning to it soon.

The vast majority of the population cannot imagine what drugs are doing to contribute to the crime figures in this country.

Taking drugs does not lead everyone into a life of crime, but the crime starts at the door of the supplier. The people that get hooked often cannot keep up their job of work and they then need to fund their addiction...prostitution, theft ~ just a few of the 'illegal' activities to pay for an illegal habit.

I've been threatened by junkies because I've spoiled their dealing. It is very scary.

Sorry if I've ranted a bit, but unless you have seen it, you cannot know how bad it really is.

sozzledchops · 18/02/2012 13:09

a few puffs of a spliff maybe two or three times. My drug is alcohol and I'm a aware i need to control it or it could get out of hand easily so I don't want to take the moral high ground regarding drugs as i think alcohol caused much more harm overall - but hey it's legal. My peer group when i was young was never into drugs so was never really tempted and I was worried I might have an addictive personality.

LittleWhiteWolf · 18/02/2012 14:04

That's exactly what I mean Solo, glad I'm not the only one!

Bunbaker · 19/02/2012 09:24

I agree with Solo and LittleWhiteWolf. I think anyone that refuses to believe that drugs are the root of an awful lot of crime is just burying their head in the sand.

My niece also works in a prison and has to deal with the fallout every day.

I agree about alcohol. I have personally witnessed alcohol adddiction and the fallout from that. It ain't nice.

Hulababy · 19/02/2012 09:36

Never tried, never intend to. No desire to and no curiousity either. Never smoked either.

Know too much of the damage it can do, esp since working in a prison for a few years.

Another never have, never will. I know what I'm like with penny slot machines :) Totally addictive personality type.

I do wonder if legalisation has some merit but so much investment would be required for such an infrastructure and that's never gonna happen with our current gvt.

marriedinwhite · 19/02/2012 13:35

Wasn't relaxing opening hours and making alcohol readily availabe in corner shops, garages (now that I don't get at all - shelves of alcohol in front of you as you pay for your petrol), supermarkets supposed to be beneficial and make us more like the continent where it is civilised to have a beer in the market square at any time. Moderation never really caught on in the UK as far as alcohol was concerned.

My bet is that legalising drugs would just make things so much worse.

Chandon · 19/02/2012 13:42

I have never used drugs other than coffee and alcohol.

Where I am from, drugs are almost legal and not considered "cool" as they are here, they are for losers and low lifes really, and tourists ( tulips anyone?)

Bunbaker · 19/02/2012 13:44

I'm inclined to agree with you married. Increasing the pub opening hours hasn't got rid of the binge drinking culture.

parisianwife · 19/02/2012 14:05

No, never.

Neither has DH, or my siblings as far as I'm aware (we're close).

Shoopaloop · 19/02/2012 14:11

Tried acid, ecstasy, speed, cocaine, smoked crack and heroin a few times - all between aged of 15-21. Smoked weed regularly during that period, too. Never had an addiction problem and escaped relatively unscathed. Guess I was lucky, but to be honest, all my friends were the same and none have ever had addiction problems and all are now successful adults.

I stopped taking hardcore drugs because I grew up, got a responsible job and couldnt be turning up mullered on a Monday morning. Stopped smoking weed shortly afterwards as it made me lethargic and unmotivated.

I dont regret it one bit, though.

Shoopaloop · 19/02/2012 14:12

I now drink in moderation (2-4 glasses wine per week) and smoke a pack of 10 a week. Snoking is the thing I REALLy regret ever trying.
