to think that most on here have tried class B or A drugs at some point in their lives?

I'm increasingly struggling with the wisdom of prohibiting drugs and this is increased by a suspicion that far more people have taken or take drugs than are ever willing to admit it. I am thus curious as to MNetters experiences.

Most of my friends have probably tried but I never have, not even smoked dope. Never will either - don't want it and don't need it

usualsuspect · 11/02/2012 18:17

yep, I have

verytellytubby · 11/02/2012 18:19

Yep, I have. Living in London 90% of my friends do coke. Luckily it's not my vice of choice. I stick to my favourite legal drug, wine Grin

Bunbaker · 11/02/2012 18:21

I tried dope once, but as a non smoker couldn't get the hang of inhaling as it made me cough. When I was a teenager doing drugs wasn't considered cool anyway (1970s) and was horrifically expensive, plus I didn't mix with people who did drugs.

So, in my experience, the idea that taking drugs is/was normal is not the case.

"life's shit and those who wouldn't try to take the edge off it are in the minority"

I don't agree. My life isn't shit and I don't need to escape from it. I think people's opinions are coloured by the circles they move in and my friends and family don't take illegal drugs. I enjoy the occasional glass of wine though, but hate feeling out of control.

oiwheresthecoffee · 11/02/2012 18:22

MDMA is pretty common now. Fucking expensive though. And methadrone (spelling ?). A fair few of my friends do coke and various others. Im currently on a AntiDs so i cant even drink anymore. Id could murder a spliff though but its been a while and probably wouldnt be very wise.

Bunbaker · 11/02/2012 18:31

"I took everything- for a long period of time.

I don't think I know anyone who didn't."

If you took drugs you will have associated with other people who took them, so for you, it was normal that most people took drugs. I didn't move in those circles, so in my case taking drugs was not the norm at all.

There was one girl in my school who took speed. She had a bad flashback at a party and screamed the place down. Most of us didn't know or understand what was going on and just muttered "oh she takes drugs" in a rather derogatory tone and ignored her because they thought she was stupid. This was in 1976 BTW.

iklboo · 11/02/2012 18:32

Never had, never will. Never smoked either.

CheshireDing · 11/02/2012 18:33

No never tried drugs or smoked anything, even though the majority of people I used to socialise with did.

I will stick to wine too (and high quality Vodka) :)

Magneto · 11/02/2012 18:33

Never done any Illegal drugs, never smoked and never even been drunk either.

Im honestly surpised at the number of people who havent. I think i miht only know one person who has never done "drugs".

Catstwattypoosituation · 11/02/2012 18:42

I have never in all my days heard of someone getting speed flashbacks. I've heard of people getting into hysterics for attention plenty though.

ouryve · 11/02/2012 18:45

"only" pot. Only once. Wasn't impressed.

No inclination to try anything harder. Saw someone close to me almost destroyed by heroin

lottiegb · 11/02/2012 18:45

Hmm, am out of date with classifications, I think cannabis was a lowly class C when I last smoked it, in which case no I haven't.

I don't think most people have, no. People hang around with people who behave similarly, so will have vastly skewed ideas of normal, both ways. At university almost everyone I hung around with smoked dope and for most, that was all. Some did speed or acid occasionally, only a few went beyond that. There were plenty of other social groups who did not smoke or do anything at all and in numbers, they were probably greater, as they included most of the people you never saw, except in lectures.

I stopped smoking in my final year as it wasn't conducive to concentrating on studying which I got more into, I recognised how boring it makes people and I have a basic ethical problem with the supply chain - there isn't much organic, fairtrade resin available, there is a horrible chain of violence and links to serious criminality.

I suppose I think I'd like to take heroin once and only once - without any potential for fatal effects. I was getting all enthusiastic about the diamorphine offered during delivery, until I learnt about the nausea and 'out of it' effects, now not on my birth plan.

noddyholder · 11/02/2012 18:48

Out of all my friends in my 20s the better the job eg all the solicitors doctors and esp one dentist were the worst! They were all without exception raving coke heads and E, plus copious amounts of wine and cannabis. Probably because they had more cash. The rest of us the more arty ones and media types were actually less druggy although my mum was convinced all of them were worse!

oiwheresthecoffee · 11/02/2012 18:54

Noddy - the Medical /Dentistry students i knew were on everything as well. They even say party like a med student round here.

thecook · 11/02/2012 18:55

My area, near Notting Hill is awash with coke. Many of the bars have fitted sloping shelves behind the toilets in a futile attempt to stop people snorting.

noddyholder · 11/02/2012 18:55

3 guys I knew doing dentistry were hardcore. Interestingly 2 of them had GPs as dads and I think they knew tbh

SharkBite · 11/02/2012 18:56

Nope never.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 11/02/2012 18:58

DH works in an industry where people of our age and stage (pretty moved on from all that) are still living that lifestyle. We've never lost friends through the drugs themselves but we have lost friends through accidents they've had while under their influence in horrific, traumatic circumstances. What happened to them could have happened while drunk too though. Sad

Labootin · 11/02/2012 19:09

In the 90's yes.. You name it pre kids I did it.
Am rather surprised by the not ever crew I presumed it was a twenties rite of passage

missorinoco · 11/02/2012 19:16

Never.

Jellykat · 11/02/2012 19:41

Yes, I had a bit of a problem with speed in my youth.
Am also surprised by the Nos (as in negative, not Nitrous Oxide) on this thread.

nellyjelly · 11/02/2012 19:42

Second the comment about cannabis/skunk. The stuff people smoke now is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay stronger than the stuff you got back in the 90s and before. I saw a gang of lads, couldn't have been much older than 12 smoking and given that the stuff is really strong these days, I did wonder about the state of their minds, if their adolesence is spent smoking this.
