To be in A State? My dog has been savaged.

Was walking my poor doggy minding our own business and two dogs jumped on her and pinned her to the ground and bit her. She screamed. I took her to the vets and she has sutures and anti-biotics and I am eyeing the wine and frankly in a State.

Pore ol her and me Sad

lol Dust from a dog lover too ! God forgive me!

But seriously - in that situation and the one that signet describes - I'd be kicking and doing anything I could to protect my dog/child/self (not in that order obv!)

signet2012 · 09/02/2012 21:57

That is all you can do. the first attack was two small staffies like I said so the problem there was they where fast little bastards. It is terribly off putting when your dog is screeching. (A noise you will never want to hear again) looking bag it probably looked quite comical because my partner is a big lad and he was trying to drop kick these two very fast and quite small dogs and kicked me. Our dog was trying to run away but I wouldn't leave go of his lead (busy roads + dog in blind panic) so I inadvertently tripped DP up with the lead. Whilst all this was going on I was screaming "They are biting him, they are biting him fcking hell fcking hell!!!!!" at the top of my lungs. The owner of the two dogs was shouting "kick them just f*cking kick them" One of them then latched onto my dogs long spaniel ears so stupidly I kneeled down put one hand on my dogs ear and used the other hand to punch the Staffie in the face, at which point it left go of him and then latched onto my arm! So then I was screeching "its biting me, its biting me" Whilst trying to shake this bloody dog off my arm. Partner finally connected with one of them and dropped kicked it across the road and then the other one followed. I just ran with the dog to get it home incase they came back whilst my partner followed. Once in doors trying to find out whose blood was whose was a job, but my dog's tail was back to wagging and he was trying to lick me clean of my blood even though his ear was dripping blood. :( I could of cried.

Second time was horrible. My dog was off his lead quite happily and as usual I was scanning the area constantly for people/dogs/bikes/ saw a white dog in the distance appeared to be alone so immediately put my dog back on his lead, started to walk a little further down the green and turned to see this dog do one step, two step then pounce on the back of my dog. Mine turned round screeching trying to get away as it sunk its teeth into his back, then it did this little hop skip a jump to the front of my dog and then sunk into his neck. I screamed as usual and my partner started hitting it as hard as he could (he is 19 stone and built like brick shit house) the dog didnt even flinch. Eventually it left go and I put my arms round my dog and blocked it and the dog went to lunge again and caught my thumb. 2 Passerbys ran over and dog limped back to its owner who had no idea what had happened as was too far away to hear or see any of this.

I actually do not walk the dog round my area now, instead I put him in the car and drive to other end of town so he can have a nice run on the beach.

on the rare occasion I have walked him I have a tin of polish in my pocket and my shed key which is massive and sharp. I would like to carry a big stick but knowing my luck the local thugs would take it off me and hit me with it ! :)

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 09/02/2012 22:02

Oh god, it's petrifying - I don't know what I'd do, other than kick the crap out of the other dog and hope that worked.

As a dog lover though (as your partner knows) the guilt of causing harm to the animal would hit me afterwards.

The dog park that I talked about earlier is a good 30 minute walk from my house, I chose to take my dog there rather than the park around the corner purely because there is high drug use and they druggies all have status dogs Sad I couldn't bear my dog to come a cropper with them, although my dog is no wallflower and I think she would probably give as good as she got. I hope I never find out though!

So sad it's happened to you twice though, lucky you had DP with you - I walk my dog alone (or with DD), I shudder to think...stopping thinking now!

Salmotrutta · 09/02/2012 22:04

I'm sorry to read this Hully - watching your loved family dog getting attacked is a horrible thing. Sad
We haven't had a dog for quite some time now (cats rule the roost here) but we did experience one or two similar incidents when we had dogs.
I hope your poor dog (and you!) feel better tonight/tomorrow.

tigerlillyd02 · 10/02/2012 02:15

How sad. Dogs are certainly a part of the family and it deeply hurts us to see them hurt. I feel for both of you. I hope you're both feeling better in the morning.

MitchieInge · 10/02/2012 09:30

How are you today? Hope your dog is ok, when can you walk her again?

Wondering whether you might want a favourite toy of hers or some extra nice treats in case she is a bit nervous. Hopefully she won't be of course.

MitchieInge · 10/02/2012 09:30

(to take on walks I mean)

ChickensGoMeh · 10/02/2012 09:45

Even though you won't want to, try and get her out for a walk as soon as she's able. Otherwise an upsetting incident like this will really knock your confidence.

Hullygully · 10/02/2012 11:28

Well, she was up ALL NIGHT staring at me, panting and whimpering and wouldn't sleep even right next to me with my hand on her. She finally got on our bed and went to sleep this morning.

I will try and take her out later for a short walk. I have spent the morning cancelling our half term holiday! The joy.

Oh lord hully Sad Poor girl.

This, and only this, is the one fear that makes me feel I shouldn't have a dog. The fear that one day someone else's dog will make a beeline for my jolly stupidly good-natured animal and tear bits out of him for no conceivable reason.

Fingers crossed for you both.

Sorry about the holiday too.

Hullygully · 10/02/2012 11:42

Don't get one. I would say that to anyone.

OP posts:
ChickensGoMeh · 10/02/2012 11:44

They are a heartache. You love them, feed them, pick up after them, pay out a fortune for treats, toys, vets bills...and then they go and bloody die on you. Bastards

OrmIrian · 10/02/2012 11:46

Too late hully, too late! We have one since the summer and he is already firmly at the centre of our family life.

MitchieInge · 10/02/2012 11:53

Are they quite uncomplicated puncture wounds? Just hoping for quick healing. What a rotten shame about the holiday :( poor all of you

Hullygully · 10/02/2012 11:55

Yes, hopefully. The punctures look nice and clean this morning, it's the psychological side now...she is asleep on all dd's clothes at the moment.

MitchieInge · 10/02/2012 12:01

she might surprise you by being fine on walks but it won't hurt to be tooled up with whatever is her most amazing excitement - favourite toy, cheese, sausages whatever - for a while

ChickensGoMeh · 10/02/2012 12:04

Poor hound. I hope she bounces back quickly.

bubby64 · 10/02/2012 12:16

Hi, as a Staffie owner who has had her poor little girl attacked by a Poodle and a GSD, it is all about the socialisation and training of the dog, not the dog breed. I must admit, when it happened it shook both me and my 2 11yo sons up, and now the dog has gone from a happy, tail wagging, friendly, well socialised dog to one who is scared of other dogs coming up to her.
If the Akita slipped its lead, then it was out of control in a public place, as others have said, and that is a police matter. Does your vet have any record of an owner with one of each breed, by any chance, as it was our vet who helped us identify the owner of the ones who attacked my Cleo.
After that, I got a small spray can of stuff to deter other dogs which I carry, just in case.

flibbertywidget · 10/02/2012 12:25

oh Poor thing. My cocker has been attacked by my ex neighbours 2 staffies, twice. THey also killed my cat.

It is so traumatic when it happens. We have an akita near us and it is not muzzled, but always on a lead and it is has attacked several times.

We made our neighbours pay up 3 times for vets bills - it has cost them £3k in total

the final time, when their little shit dogs attacked my dog, in the park, by the kids play area. I had just had my son and my DD was 2.3 at the time and she saw it all. THe little shits were off the lead and headed straight for my dog and ripped into her. She was in a right mess. It could've been my daughter!

I had DS in a sling and had to half carry and drag my dog home with my DD sobbing. My neighbours with their shit dogs didn't offer to help.

we live in a well to do area - allegedly.

I reported to police and council and our neighbours stopped talking to me and told me dogs were their babies and they would not destroy the dogs.

Sorry - minor rant.. I hate useless dog owners. i hope y our doggie feels better soon

Gribble · 10/02/2012 12:27

My SBT has been attacked 3 times, once by a lab, the second time was a fox (!) and the latest one was a little rat dog (not sure what the hell it was). She had puncture wounds each time that the vet couldnt stitch up, they took a couple of weeks to heal properly and now you can see scars where the fur hasnt grown back on her face /legs but they arent too bad.

She still loves playing with other dogs though and it hasnt put her off bless her. I just worry she'll get attacked again so dont really enjoy taking her out anymore.

Hope your lil pooch is better soon Smile

BeribbonedGibbon · 10/02/2012 12:47

Sorry to hear she had a bad night Sad Hope she is feeling brighter today.

haggisaggis · 10/02/2012 13:02

We used to have a rough collie who seemed to get set upon all the time by other dogs. QUite often he'd be walking quietly on the lead with us when another dog (or dogs) would fly at hime and try to take achunk out. WE were convinced he was wearing teh wrong deodorant or something. (dh was always quick enough with his feet to ensure the other dogs didn't do any major damage).
The first time he got attacked was at dog obedience classes..

ExitPursuedByaBear · 10/02/2012 13:58

I am Shock at how many dog attacks people have experienced. My springer has dog on dog aggression (brought on being attacked by a boxer, several times) but he is more handbags at five paces than tearing chunks out, and really only wants to chase. (He is always under control). Horrified at how many dogs seem to need the vet after such encounters.

Hope mutley is feeling better, and how dreadful having to cancel your holiday.

OrmIrian · 12/02/2012 19:45

How is she hully?

Funnily enough I took the dog for a run on Saturday. Woodland paths - very few other dogs. But at one point we came up behind a family with 2 dogs, one of which was one of the scary looking wall-eyed farm dogs you see tied up in farmyards looking terminally pissed off. So when they turned off I carried on the main path. 2 mins later yells from the owners and the scary dog came hurtling out of the side path heading for my dog like an Exocet missile! I panicked a bit, stood in front of my dog, spread my arms out (to look bigger I guess Hmm) and yelled NO! in my fiercest voice. Dogs scarpered! Grin Glad no-one was there to watch me though.

GoingForGoalWeight · 12/02/2012 21:12

Sorry for your experience today, Hully :(

All the best to you both.
