In my defense we had frozen veg and gravy with it :)

My DD 13 looked at her plate and said "I thought we were having (homemade)lasagne
Am I a terrible mother for thinking "youre nearly 14, you have cooking lessons in school, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that YOU cook the (homemade) dinner

Did anyone else feed their kids frozen crap or am I the only awful parent on mn?
I really hope not, what did you all have for dinner?

Havent done pies but fish fingers regularly. The thing I'm going to to more often is meat or fish and two veg. So grilled or roasted chops, salmon, chicken portions, some form of carb and veg. Surely there are no extra brownie points for chopping and sauce making?

tardisjumper · 08/02/2012 20:53

I cook from scratch 95% of the time and I would happily serve that up. And had that served up to me by my parents who cooked all the time! It was my fave.

YANBU!

aldiwhore · 08/02/2012 20:55

I'm still poorly and feel like I'm getting worse, Dh is off work anyway so doing most of the cooking, but when its been down to me they've been living on random freezer food combos (with veg).

YANBU to do this ocassionally.

Every freezer should have emergency rations inside.

Thinking about exactly what they've eaten its not been bad at all, strange homemade leftovers that are a lucky dip, fish, forzen chicken breasts etc., but they've also had cheese and onion pasty and tomato soup.

At 14 its a great age to start getting DD to do at least one family meal a week.

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 08/02/2012 20:55

Oh YANBU at all

christinecagney · 08/02/2012 20:56

To be honest if your DC is nearly 14 she should be doing a freezer tea for you IMO! My DS who is 14 does a freezer tea every Monday ready for when me and the 2 little ones get on from work/childminders. Frozen fish, chips (both 30 mins in a hot oven), then baked beans in the microwave. He has to have it on the table for 530 when we get in. It's good for him to take a bit of responsibility and If he's done it really sensibly and on time etc then i add a pound to his pocket money. So we have freezer tea one night, take away one night, rest of week is pretty much home cooked from scratch, so we get a reasonable balance over all. Op your friend the pie lady is mad!

takingiteasy · 08/02/2012 21:01

We call it a council tea here and indulge in something with beans and chips about once a week, usually a night I'm not in until about 5pm and we've got Karate at 6.30.

Pretty much homecooked every other night, with some help from the freezer now and again !

bubby64 · 08/02/2012 21:25

Mine have tea from freezer 3x a week, as I am working til 7.30, and the limit of DH's skills are take from freezer and bung in oven! Has never hurt DC, or DH, and I cook the other 4 nights. My dc are 11, and they do help DH some evenings I work to prepare the veg to go with meal, otherwise it would always be baked beans!!

OnlyANinja · 08/02/2012 21:26

Your friend who baked 3 different pies for her fussy kids is mental.

squeakytoy · 08/02/2012 21:44

depends on if she pulled 3 different pies out of the freezer, opened 3 fray bentos tins, or actually cooked 3 different pies from scratch...Grin

I freeze pie fillings and just defrost in a morning, make some pastry, build pie, and shove in the oven for half an hour... just as nutritious as if it was freshly made.

McHappyPants2012 · 08/02/2012 21:48

I hardly ever cook from scratch, if I do homemade bolagnase sauce the rc will not touch it open up a jar of dolmio and the kids wolf it down.

So I tend to mix fresh with frozen

Denj33 · 08/02/2012 21:56

She actually cooked 3 different pies from scratch AND made the pastry

DD is making spaghetti Bol for dinner tomorrow, she made it in food tech last week so should be fun....she is actually looking forward to it, it will be so nice to come in from work and have someone preparing a meal, normally it's me cooking as soon as I get in the door with my coat and boots still on so DS2 can eat before 7pm, and be in bed by 8:30

The DCs normally clean up kitchen, load dishwasher after dinner do we decided if they are going to be cooking, I'll do the dishwasher etc, seems fair.

She needs introducing to Mumsnet. Or telly. Or something.

Denj33 · 08/02/2012 22:20

She has the most perfect house as well, I've never seen a house so clean, I hate it when she comes to my chaotically untidy lived in house. She is always gardening or baking or making sure her DCs are watching an educationally documentary(mine watch Eastenders)
Come to think of it, I don't actually like her very much, it's just I've known her since DD was 4. Does anyone else have friends that make them feel useless?

Thank god for mumsnet

Once a week my dc's have jacket, cheese and beans and its practically their favorite tea. I cook five nights. Take away once a week. Corned beef hash is an ace quick meal. Pulled a blinder tonight, stir fry noodle thing from aldi, added chow mein sauce, grilled two pieces of salmon I found in freezer and added a tin of pineapple. Was bloody lovely - clean plates all round. I don't even make my own lasagnas anymore- even marks and Spencer's are cheaper to buy than itbs to make them from scratch.

SunHoliday · 08/02/2012 22:27

I beleive, could be wrong, that frozen veg, straight veg such as pes, corn on the cob, broccoli etc is actually more nutritious especially if you steam it.

The vitamins and minerals leach out over time, hence the large import ravelling time leads to loss of vitamins, then they sit on the shop floor for a time then in your fridge. Where as most veg these days are snap frozen. Boliing veg will also lead to loss of viamins and nutrients (hence the recommendation to use the broccoli water in your gravy) so steam them and keep even more in.

Meat we freeze as we buy the reduced items almostout of date.

Ready meals we dont do, though.

McHappyPants2012 · 08/02/2012 22:30

3 homemade pies don't seem heathy what with all the butter and lard in the pastry any how

startwig1982 · 08/02/2012 22:37

We had sausages, chips and eggs tonight but I cook from scratch most other nights. It's nice to gave something in the freezer that you can do if you can't be arsed run out of time. Lentil casserole tomorrow!

BrigitBigKnickers · 08/02/2012 22:42

Monday-we had shop bought sausage rolls (heated up) peas and and frozen hash browns. (Got home at 7 that night after trapsing to dance school and station.)

Tuesday- we had burgers frozen chips and salad (got home from work at 6 then back and forth from the dance school/ station (to pick up DH and DD1) till 8.

COCKadoodledooo · 08/02/2012 22:56

When I was 14 I was cooking the dinner for the family on average 4 nights a week. Am fully expecting dc's to be doing the same!

Tonight though the boys had eaten at cm/nursery and it was just dh and I. As we were waiting for the Ocado delivery and had next to no food and less inclination we had waffles, fish fingers and beans Blush Yup, kiddie food at 35 and 38..

auntmargaret · 08/02/2012 23:32

OMG, Easy, a "council tea"?
Did you mean that to sound so rude?

auntmargaret · 08/02/2012 23:34

And even if it comes from the freezer, you do cook it at some point? Get over yourself, love. YABU.

auntmargaret · 08/02/2012 23:36

That is, YABU to be so precious about one fucking frozen dinner. YANBU to feed them it. And breathe.
