In my defense we had frozen veg and gravy with it :)

My DD 13 looked at her plate and said "I thought we were having (homemade)lasagne
Am I a terrible mother for thinking "youre nearly 14, you have cooking lessons in school, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that YOU cook the (homemade) dinner

Did anyone else feed their kids frozen crap or am I the only awful parent on mn?
I really hope not, what did you all have for dinner?

Did you cook it first or straight from the freezer? Wink

Reesie · 08/02/2012 20:23

I have always cooked homemade fresh food but recently since havind a third baby - I'm knackered. I made a 'frozen' meal the other a few weeks ago and couldn't believe how easy it was - chucked in the oven - no mess.

I'm hooked to be honest and at least once a week we have a 'breadcrumb delight night'.

So, no YANBU

Denj33 · 08/02/2012 20:26

Was tempted just to put it on the plate frozen lol

It was really nice as well, but I have just spoken to my perfect mother of 2 friend who has just baked 3 pies as all her kids like different fillings, made me feel bad for about 5 minutes til I came to my senses :)

Once a week we have frozen crap. (fish fingers chips and beans). The kids love it. And barely abide my lovingly homemade offerings.

zandy · 08/02/2012 20:28

Would be a shame to have a freezer full of food and not feed it to anyone. Why would it make you unreasonable?

keepingupwiththejoneses · 08/02/2012 20:29

My dc had sausage mash and peas for tea tonight, all from the freezer. I am not well so it was just so easy. Never seen ds2 eat a meal so quickly and quietly.

myheadsamarley · 08/02/2012 20:30

liking the 'breadcrumb delight night' we call them 'beige dinners'.. no problems with them one night a week (or less) but always do feel a teeny bit guilty... at least they're cheaper and prob less calorific horrific than a take away.... (I hope!!)

marriedinwhite · 08/02/2012 20:31

My DS loves a puff pastry steak pie with frozen chips and peas - and ketchup - so does DH. I could make it but it's an easy mid week dinner that they both like. On those nights DD and I might have a nice quality burger wth the same. Tonight they had pizza and a bit of salad. Tomorrow I think there are bits and bobs in the freezer to use up - last of the oven chips, fish fingers, couple of fish cakes, etc.

If it's still cold at the weekend might make a home made steak and kidney pudding though.

PippiL · 08/02/2012 20:31

We had bagels toasted with cheese on top! (with a few token slices of cucumber).

Well dcs had school dinner today, surely that can count as their nutritional meal...?

Mumof1plustwins · 08/02/2012 20:31

Haha home cooked dinner...what's that?? Wink

DD had to have a chicken burger because she doesn't like fish fingers anymore (?!?) so I ate them instead and we had beans and cheese on toast...
Yes not very appealing or healthy vs a home cooked meal but in my defence I have an ill fussy 6 yr old and the same for DTs actually but today they ate my dinner! Plus some prunes and yoghurt afterwards Grin
I think I'll take them to McDonald's tomorrow Wink
(joking!)

PippiL · 08/02/2012 20:32

"beige dinner" Grin

Gumby · 08/02/2012 20:33

Pizza night! Always Fromm freezer
Sometimes salad too but usually garlic bread

Hulababy · 08/02/2012 20:34

We have a mix. I try to cook properly most days, but if it has been a busy day or I just don't feel like it then it is something else - freezer, take away, etc.

If DH or DD want a home cooked meal every day then they can cook it. Otherwise they get what they are given :)

Luckily neither ever complain!

thepeoplesprincess · 08/02/2012 20:34

In this abose it's known as 'freezer surprise'.

motherinferior · 08/02/2012 20:35

Pie woman is utterly bonkers. You are sane.

thekidsrule · 08/02/2012 20:35

im glad uve embraced the freezer culture, you do realise there is N0 going back now,lol

lechatnoir · 08/02/2012 20:35

Wow you're doing better than me then - I had a manic day last week & hadn't planned dinner so stopped off at the local bakery for hot pies & served them with baked beans and potato farls (yes, the ones you just put in the toaster - no cooking in my house that day Blush).

My kids however thought it was ace (does that warrants a Hmm at my clearly shite cooking every other day or a Grin that they would be happy to exist on crap?)

BackforGood · 08/02/2012 20:36

Well, until you admitted you cooked it first, I was going to say Ywere a tad U, but as you cooked it, I can't see the problem.
Mind, all my dc cook a meal each, every week, and one of them will often be something that comes out of the fridge or/and freezer, is placed on an oven tray and bunged in the oven. They do like to make 'meals from scratch' too though.

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 08/02/2012 20:37

We have 'freezer surprise' or 'fruits of the freezer' here :o

I think I'm going to make my DS and DD start cooking once a week as well, I really like that idea.
They get home before me, surely it's not unreasonable to ask them to at least start the dinner?

My freezer food is home cooked. At Captain Birds Eye and Aunt Bessie's house.

littlemissnormal · 08/02/2012 20:48

I was brought up on tinned food; fray bentos pies, tinned potatoes, tinned mince, tinned veg and tinned fruit. That's got to be much worse than frozen chips surely???

mantlepiece · 08/02/2012 20:48

Have just tried the frozen McCain Jacket Potatoes..they are as good as home made! My freezer is now mostly full of them... Not usually a fan of frozen products but these are great!

BackforGood · 08/02/2012 20:49

Certainly no if they are 14 Denj33. We've been doing it for about 18months now, and my youngest is only 10.5 now (she's the one who usually gets to do the 'bung in the oven' meal, but does sometimes do other things). After I've done the week's shop, I stick a list on the fridge of who is doing which night, and what the 'tea' is (working around who is coming home late or going out early). It's been incredibly easy to get them to do it - MUCH easier than it used to be persuading them to come and help with part of the meal I was starting off, or trying to persuade them on a 'one off' basis. I think they like the fact they see it's fair - they all have to do one meal each, helps, and they don't have the usual arguments about it not being their turn. It's also really cut back on the moaning as I put food on the table - they appreciate the work that's gone in, and they know if they want to try something different, they can look up recipes and put ingreds on the shopping list. Give it a try Smile
