to want to buy socks without silver nano particles in them?

Apparently S'buries dont cater for people who dont want an unnecessary essentially untested new nano scale product in their socks....

It is rather alarming that nano-particles are so much more controlled in my work environment than in for instance sainsburys....

I am reminded of a previous product that was cheap fantastic and funky and went into everything from concrete through wallpaper to ironing boards before the health implications had been properly examined, and which people now have to pay $$$ to get removed from buildings by people in HAZMAT suits....

What nano particles?
I thought you'd say you couldn't find plain black socks, only ones with silver sparkly bits.
I will look for these socks next time I'm there. Intrigued now.

So nano particles are on a level with asbestos? I suggest primark for socks. Cheap as chips and not a nano in sight. Hth.

I am certainly not saying nano-particles are as dangerous as asbestos...just that asbestos was released without proper health checks and silver nano-particles have been too. Hopefully we will be lucky this time eh?

I should point out that I work in the realm of nano-tech and am not at all a lentil weaving 'FEAR THE NEW' person. But there are already some proven health risks to nano-silver so I dont really get why we need it in socks.

erm yeah well radio activity is also antibacterial but I think I will skip it in my socks too.

Why is it in socks? And also is it actually in socks or have the sock makers said it's in the socks to make us all rush out and buy nano socks for some super duper reason that I don't know about? Um.

hmm for that matter why not lace socks with antibiotics of the conventional sort....at least they have been tested on humans....

Perhaps I should also point out that silver in metallic or ionic form is almost totally safe. But colloidal or nano-silver has been shown to be toxic in brains and livers etc.

quiet hmm thats an interesting question...perhaps I will get some of the undergrads to find out if there really is any silver nano particles in s'buries socks....would make a good team project.

Im with you Entropy . Why put it in socks ? Is it to do with inhibiting bacterial growth ? Why not wash your feet you dont need nano-silver socks. . . just soap and water ! Grin

Im sure i have seen wound dressings with it in them also , perhaps it was just "normal silver" ? . Either way it seems to me that those that market , are looking for more extrem gimicks all the time to sell their products.

Its not fair that these "untested" things are being promoted .

Entropygirl, how NANO is the silver? Can it pass through the skin (reach the brain/liver), or would you have to ingest the socks? Is there not a fairly big size range for what constitutes a nano particle and therefore what would be safe?
Marketing ploy on the part of S'buries methinks...... is the silver actually Nano, or there at all after a couple of washes?
