To sways be a little dubious when women claim they didn't know they were pregnant?

I'm talking women who give birth in their bathroom and claim they went through being pregnant for 9 months without having the foggiest.

I know some women don't get symptoms like sickness etc, I can believe women who maybe reach say 5 months or so. And I know some women don't get bumps, I've seen that myself, but come on...how can any woman not feel a 7lb baby moving around inside them? Or to think that when an elbow is poking out and wriggling around that it's just wind? Or when they shift from one side of your stomach to the other? Really just wind is it?

I remember when I was about 5 months pregnant with DS his dad complaining cos he couldn't sleep because of the vibrations coming off the bed from baby kicking. Bump wasn't even touching him and he could still feel it. Surely that kind of thing must happen to everyone whether u have a bump or not?

I know a load of you will give me your stories of ''it happened to my friend'' but i just really really struggle to really believe them.

I have a friend who has been pregnant 4 times. The last 3 were just as you (and I) had, with obvious kickings, bumps etc. Her first though was one where she had to ring her (then boyfriend) husband from the hospital with a babe in arms and try and explain it all. It does happen. I cant understand it by any means either, but it does happen.

ChocolateIsAFoodGroup · 05/02/2012 17:50

You are so NBU!

I am pregnant with DC3..... either pregnant or dying of some strange sleeping sickness... bleurgghhh.... I know some women don't get symptoms in their first trimester. Lucky. Bloody. Them.

Jealous, moi?!

But seriously, I agree with you - you could (theoretically....) sail through the first trimester, but not to notice an elbow kicking you in the ribs? I think some of these women are Floating. Up. De. Nile.....

but not even that late stage stuff (no room for your food, and feet all pointy and painful up into your ribs and needing a wee all the time) but at the beginning, the shift in the way everything tastes and smells and feels, how utterly exhausting it is in the first few weeks when you just fall asleep everywhere but also spewing and feeling shit yet somehow still gaining weight as it progresses. So unfair

it is really hard to imagine someone not noticing any signs at all, they must be lucky and just not have any?

McHappyPants2012 · 05/02/2012 17:53

Yabu it happens, especially if the baby Is led in a certain way the kicks ect are towards the placenta and not the stomach

Well I can't understand it at all but I would certainly not discount all those who report it as liars.

There are lots of things that are difficult to understand from our own experiences but doesn't make others different experiences any less real.

somedayma · 05/02/2012 17:54

I know someone who had a surprise baby. She was tripping on acid at the time so imagine it was v hard to take in. Her bf was also high on something and forgot how to spell his name and the mum's name so it was pretty tricky filling in the hospital forms. She genuinely had no idea and felt terrible about possible harming the baby but she was fine, perfectly healthy.

HumphreyCobbler · 05/02/2012 17:54

Cases like this are very well documented.

I know two people who did not know until very late on, and one only found out after she got pre-eclampsia and nearly died.

It may seem strange to you but that doesn't mean it isn't true.

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 05/02/2012 17:55

YANBU-ish

I would imagine if you are of the larger persuasion and the placenta is in the right place and you happen to bleed through out then you could easily go through not knowing.

a friend of mine it happened to her, shes not a skinny lass so didnt notice the bit of whieght she put on, her periods were dodgy anyway so not much difference there, her DS didnt move much and the first she knew was when she was in agony in the bathroom and her DS was born down the toilet, he hasnt ever seen his father as she had split up with him six months before for violence

missduff · 05/02/2012 17:57

I'm now 12 weeks pregnant and I've had all the usual sickness but I know that not everybody does so I totally believe missing the first trimester.

But I just don't think that you can mistake a foot in your ribs for a bit of wind. Or those shifts where they move from one side of your stomach to the other, I mean at the end u can see how baby is lying.

Those of you who don't 'believe' in it - what on earth do you think is the motivation of these women?

I think just because you haven't experienced it does not mean it is not possible.

historyrepeats · 05/02/2012 18:00

Bloody hell stranded, what a fascinating story. Smile Tell us more.

Oggy · 05/02/2012 18:00

Jeepers stranded - those pics are incredible! no wonder you didn't think you were about to give birth.

I reckon most people would like to look like that when they weren't preggers, let alone 4-9 months!

I barely felt my first move and probably could have dismissed her kicking as really bad wind if i hadn't of known that i was pregnant.

When people asked me if i felt her moving i lied so not to feel stupid. I did tell my MW and had to have extra scans, she was very small as well, 5lb 10oz born.

I did know one woman who it happened to, she was a customer in my SIL's shop and we saw her the day before she gave birth wearing jeans and a top, if i hadn't of seen her i wouldn't have believed her story. She had no reason to lie.

BelleEnd · 05/02/2012 18:00

OMG Stranded! You must have freaked out with the shock of it!

I think YAB a bit U, because whilst I could feel and see kicks and was the size of a bus, all pregnancies are different and if you can accept that then you can accept that maybe, if someone carried very different to the norm, they would not have noticed.
