To think dogs should be on a lead at a sledging hill?

Prepared that I might be BU.

The field is probably privately owned. It is The Sledging
Hill in the village. Loads of kids there today.

About 3 dogs, big bouncy ones, off leads chasing sledges, pissing in the snow where kids sledging, and crapping too (generally out of the way, but didn't see it picked up).

My dd is petrified of dogs, and stood about 5 minutes complaining loudly how they should be on a lead. Which was ignored by the owners.

We had to leave.

Aibu?

I agree. Dd3 is very nervous of dogs too. We work on that with her in suitable circumstances. Dogs bounding in the snow is not one of those circumstances!

GypsyMoth · 05/02/2012 13:18

The dog walkers likely go there to let there digs have safe, off lead time...... Bit of snow and suddenly everyone descends and they are expected to go?? Why?

Again, yabu!

McHappyPants2012 · 05/02/2012 13:19

whatever happened to respect and consideration? does that go out the window as soon a you accuire a dog?

same could be said about having a child.

if this hill is known for dog walker why should they have to change there place for children.

Maybe if all the kids are in the dog-walking area, all the dog owners should take their dogs to the playpark...

PippiL · 05/02/2012 13:19

It is clear that some people are responsible, good dog owners, who train their dogs properly, pick up their shit, and worry about their own dogs' safety as well as that of others...

Don't mind dogs running and playing in the snow, or children sledging.
You should still be able to recall the dog if it's chasing after sledges and getting in the way of someone else's fun. If you can't, then it needs to be on a lead.
In fact, exactly what musicposy said.

'whatever happened to respect and consideration? does that go out the window as soon a you accuire a dog?'
Rather like having a PFB, for many their focus narrows and becomes all about their animal rather than everyone else.

PippiL · 05/02/2012 13:26

It was on a pubic right of way - technically, though I guess that neither kids nor dogs should actually be on the field itself.

Hah, comedy typo! Blush

My dog loveson the sledge with the brats- don't spoil his snowy fun!

PippiL · 05/02/2012 13:30

"Loves on the sledge with the brats?" I'm pretty sure that is illegal.

Ahaha whoops he loves going on the sledge with the brats of course.

I am it a dog owner, nor particularly a dog lover, but I spent an enjoyable morning with my kids at a local park sledging with dogs all around us. Big, small, medium, running into the line of sledges etc. I have to say it did not bother me or anyone else and no-one was hurt. In fact, the running joyous dogs just added to the general lovely atmosphere of everyone having fun.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 05/02/2012 13:38

YANBU about the picking up of dog shit. All owners should pick up their dogs crap, and it'd seven worse when they don't in weather like this.

But YABU to think the dogs should be on a lead. They have as much right to be there are you and your dd, and I don't see any reason why the owners should use the field differently to the way they usually do just because you have decided that you want to use it today.

RachelWalsh · 05/02/2012 13:41

YANBU

stressedandfedup · 05/02/2012 13:42

My big daft lab had a lovely time chasing the tots on sledges this morning, he lost interest as soon as they stopped. He didn't mind them using the designated off lead (hilly) area of the park.

southeastastra · 05/02/2012 13:42

why do they have as much right?

TuftyFinch · 05/02/2012 13:46

We've got a sledging field in our village. It is privately owned and is The Sledging Hill when it snows. Lots of us there this morning - all of us effectively trespassing. Dogs, kids and sledges.
Pipl, because your field sounds similar and not really 'public' space I don't think you can expect owners to put dogs on lead; they might have been the owners of the field Grin. I hope you managed a few goes though. We had great fun in a deer pulling sled. Going back out in a bit.

Northernlurker · 05/02/2012 13:47

I don't see why dogs have a right to frighten children? The kids are there one day of the year - tomorrow am they will be off to school.

mousymouseprice · 05/02/2012 13:49

They have as much right to be there are you and your dd

I disagree. dogs are pets and have to be controlled at all times. if they can't/won't they should not be there off lead.

Popbiscuit · 05/02/2012 13:54

YANBU.

I let my Westie run around off-leash while the kids are sledding if there is no one else there. She loves to chase them and will actually go down on my lap but the moment someone else showed up I'd have her back on the leash immediately. I know not everyone would appreciate being chased by an excited dog while they were tobogganing Grin

As for the poo issue. Ew. That's just bad manners. I cannot believe people who don't pick up after their dogs. If you did that here you'd be hung, drawn and quartered.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 05/02/2012 13:55

AIBU to wonder just how much piss and shit 3 dogs, one on a leash, can produce in 5 minutes?

PippiL · 05/02/2012 13:59

Think one had the squits. There were 3 off leads, the other one was being walked, nicely!

PippiL · 05/02/2012 14:00

Oh and I forgot to say that even the teenagers were pretty disgusted by the shit and sloped off muttering about the stink!
