To be a bit disgusted and insulted when guests don't shower?

I have a couple of regular visitors to my house who just don't use the bath or shower when they come, however long it's for. I know that both of them at home bathe on a daily basis and regard it as almost a bit of a treat at the end of the day, but they don't use my bath.

I should add that the bath is brand new and clean as a whistle - guest bathroom as well so no excuse that we are hogging it or anything. And I provide them with a fluffy towel as well and nice toiletries.

It's up to them of course but TBH I feel really insulted that they don't seem to want to use my bathroom and don't get why... Is it actually normal to visit someone's house and not have a proper wash, and I've never realised?!

Maybe they do a surreptitious FFF ( face, feet and fanny) with a flannel and make do until they get home. TMI, sorry.

sheeplikessleep · 04/02/2012 21:40

Totally depends how long they stay. 2-3 days max. Any more, ewww.

my ex BIL used to never wash when he stayed with us. He worked on a construction site and would arrive Fri pm reeking of BO and other work related smells. However he would always shower the day he left which used to annoy me because he would leave behind rancid, greasy, horrible smelling sheets but would arrive home fresh as a daisy for his own bed / sheets. So glad he is my ex BIL Grin

MoreBeta · 04/02/2012 22:01

Have to say I prefer people to have a really obvious shower rather than a sureptitious wash.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 04/02/2012 22:03

My FIL doesn't shower when he comes here. He doesn't at home much, either, so I don't take it personally.

southeastastra · 04/02/2012 22:03

i really couldn't give a stuff what people did unless they really did smell and even then i would probably not give it much thought

JobCarHouseNoBaby · 04/02/2012 22:09

I personally find it easier to have a quick strip wash at friend's houses. I cannot shower without washing my hair. Which then means I need a hair towel. Followed by a mirror in my room to brush my hair. Followed by use of a hair drier.

All a bit too much faff IMO as a guest, as I don't want to put the host out, so I just have a quick wash, put my hair up and jump in the shower as soon as I get home.

But if I was staying somewhere longer than 1 night I would have to have a proper shower, and would probably have a bigger bag with me (so can bring my own hair drier)

Shd say i am not a FFF person. I am full shower every morning. Not a flannel owner.

southeastastra · 04/02/2012 22:15

why can't you shower without washing your hair? i only wash mine twice a week could face doing it every day jobcar

Spuddybean · 05/02/2012 00:02

south i can't shower without washing my hair, it always gets damp and greasy at the front from the moist air so it needs a wash. Which is why i only shower every other day and sink wash on the others. (unless i go to the gym)

BackforGood · 05/02/2012 00:06

I've heard it all now......

PigletUnrepentant · 05/02/2012 00:10

We had a week long guest who didn't use the shower or bath... I felt disgusted when he was around because we could hardly breath in his presence, and also after he left because all the horrible smell had transfered onto the sofas, dining chairs and visit room bed.

God people, just get in the bloody shower....!

Thank the sweet lord above that I don't have the sort of issues which involve freaking out about using someone else's shower...

And a 'strip wash'...? Just get in the damn shower...! Seriously - it's got to be easier, cleaner and more refreshing than smearing yourself with a face-cloth.

PigletUnrepentant · 05/02/2012 10:14

I have to say that I have yet to meet a single person who claims they don't need to shower more than 2 - 3 times a week who doesn't smell or have greasy strands of hair at the back of their head.

I guess body odour is like perfume, once you get used to it, you can't smell it on you anymore, even when the rest of the people can and do. (but are too polite or embarrassed to let you know)

Oh no, now I feel really terrible. As you know I LOVE your bathrooms and have said, on several occasions, that I would fold up your en suite and take it home with me. Unfortunately last Sunday I was just a wee bit hungover and couldn't face unpacking my stuff to shower.
Of course this weekend I got my come-uppance as I have no water at my house (heating left on etc.) since it would appear that the pipe from the mains is frozen. Consequently I have not been able to shower or do any washing. Did manage to scrape together some clean underwear (which after 2 weeks away was pretty good) plus some clean kit for the office. Now holed up in 5* hotel near my favourite airport and about to have a good shower, hair wash and change into clean things, prior to taking them all off again later when tall, dark and handsome arrives...we are going for a sauna.
But I promise faithfully that I will shower next time I visit.
OK?

McHappyPants2012 · 05/02/2012 13:00

i find it easier to jump in the shower every night rather than wash, would prefer to shower in the morning, but have to be out of the house at 6am and do not have time.

Heaven help all of you who bathe and shower at least once a day if you ever get psoriasis or excema.

I would be in agony with raw peeling skin if I bathed that often, no matter how much moisture cream or steroid cream I used.

(Walks round feeling musty but not bothered!!)

TattyDevine · 07/02/2012 17:23

I like to have a shower each morning. Its silly but I like knowing that when I move around (like wafting arms about or walking quickly through a room) I leave a fresh fragrant waft as opposed to either nothing or something bad!

I actually reckon (though you never know for sure because your brain gets used to smells) if I didn't shower every day but say every 2nd day in the winter, I probably wouldn't smell bad - I certainly wouldn't have BO - this stale waft that LeQueen talks of, who knows I might have that, hard to say, but I still think psychologically its nice to "feel" clean even if nobody else knows.

I would say that people who drink more alcohol have a heightened tendency to stink, myself included and I noticed this whilst my mother and I were sinking loads of wine at Xmas - you wake up a bit sweltery and vinegary. Haha. In a very feint way but sometimes you smell men who enjoy their beer a bit too much and you think, dude, get an extra shower in if you are going to drink regularly like that!

Don't mind what guests do but I always make sure there are towels out, we have a nice power shower and lock and all that in the guest bathroom and I find that people leaving the next morning don't tend to faff but anyone staying longer tends to shower daily (inlaws etc). Inlaws are not smelly people, but their house actually smells really bad in a feint musty way, and therefore so does their luggage, and therefore when they leave so does the spare room, which I find quite baffling!!! I think they need new carpet or an extractor fan or something, perhaps its damp in their gaffe.
