A few days ago I was a size 10 and weighed around 10st 6lbs. Bear in mind that since Christmas I have done NOTHING. I mean, I have literally sat on my arse almost every day eating and watching TV.

Yesterday I started a new job. On my feet, all day, busy, hospital environment so no time to eat - half hour lunch in which I manage to consume a small sandwich and a yogurt. Breakfast consists on a bowl of all bran and dinner is not massive either. So why the hell have I suddenly shot up to 10st 10lbs and look 6 months pregnant??? honestly my trousers are so tight that I'm getting stomach pains throughout the day. I'm so horribly bloated. And this has come on all of a sudden. Nothing to do with periods (as recently had one)

AIBU to actually be a bit concerned about this?

I would be concerned. It doesn't sound normal, so why not go and see your GP? it's probably nothing, but better checked.

Hassled · 31/01/2012 21:06

How are the bowels ?
Could it be a stress/wind combo?

thepeoplesprincess · 31/01/2012 21:06

YABU (or I am). I bloat up and down all the time. Not dead yet.

WorraLiberty · 31/01/2012 21:09

You say you weighed 'around' 10st 6 and now you weigh 10st 10lb

Maybe the first estimate wasn't accurate?

It's only a difference of 4lb which is nothing really...are you sure the scales are accurate?

Also re the tight trousers, are you sure you're not a size 12?

SoggySocks · 31/01/2012 21:09

Well the shit machine has been a bit weird lately. I'm usually constipated so not unusual for me to go for 4-5 days without a crap. Since I started eating all bran however I've been to the bog every day - could the all bran actually be causing me more harm than good? I can't be doing with being a bloater, not when I'm working.

Worra - I say "around 10st 6lbs" as that was the heaviest but it was actually between 10st 4lbs and 10st 6lbs.

The trousers are work trousers I was fitted for last month. I tried them on again last week before starting work and they were massive on me. Today they were digging in like I'd squeezed into a size 6.

A new job is stressful no matter how confident you are/nice your new colleagues are. When I am stressed my bowels go haywire. Even a change of scene like going on a weekend break=constipation and a bloated belly.

slowburner · 31/01/2012 21:15

What redpanda13 says

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/01/2012 21:17

stress + rushed meals = giant stuck farts, IME

Yoga can help if this is the case Blush

I sympathise, I'm going through a similar period of adjustment myself.

Itsallgonetitsup · 31/01/2012 21:17

Its probably the change in your diet. I can easily fluctuate by 9lbs over an indulgent weekend.

I had a bit of a piggy Xmas and few weeks that followed. 2 weeks ago I went back to my normal eating habits (pretty much slimmingworld). Within 2 days I was bloated to hell. I have lost 11lbs in 2 weeks by ging back to my normal eating but still have a bloated tum due to the increase in fibre in my diet and reduction of crap.

I am expecting it to go soon.

Changing eating habits will effect your digestive systema and how it works. Give it another couple of weeks and see if it settles down.

I would not be concerned.

WorraLiberty · 31/01/2012 21:17

Ahh right well if you're worried, you probably are better off going to the Docs to be on the safe side.

I have heard that suddenly eating bran when you're not used to it can upset the system at bit, so maybe it needs time to settle down?

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 31/01/2012 21:18

Where do you shop? We weigh the same and I am way bigger than a size 10.

Realize this sounds a bit bitchy it is not meant lime that just curious.

Have you been working nights? They make me bloat up something terrible.

rhondajean · 31/01/2012 21:22

Pms swells my stomach something awful. It also messes with my digestion.

pushmepullyou · 31/01/2012 21:25

All bran is terrible for making me bloated. To the point I can't eat it any more! Maybe try eating crap again instead Wink

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 31/01/2012 21:28

A change in eating habits like you describe do that to me. I actually bloat up and get windy if I don't eat enough in a day I can fluctuate a good 4-6lbs over a few days if my eating goes to pot once my body adjusts I go back to normal weight and actually usually drop a few pounds which I can readily afford

SoggySocks · 31/01/2012 21:28

I shop mainly asda and Next. I'm 5ft 10in

I have also had giant farts so I reckon it must be to do with the shitter. To be honest I always have felt better when eating crap compared to when I eat healthy but no, I try and be good and look what happens.

OP posts:
WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 31/01/2012 21:35

Being 5ft10 would definitely explain it. I need to either loose 10 pounds or gain another 3 inches (neither is likely to happen soon).

It could be your bowels. My dad has ibs and has actually been told to avoid high fibre food, fruit and some veg. He is very odd in that his stomach is far better on a diet of crap. He is 6 foot and 11 stone so is naturally thin.

Feel better soon.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 31/01/2012 21:36

He also farts loads too.

Miette · 31/01/2012 21:37

I think All Bran on its own as a breakfast could be a bit harsh on the digestive system. Could you swap to Weetabix/toast/porridge etc?

Miette · 31/01/2012 21:40

Could you have that thing that sheep get? You know in Tess of the D'Urbervilles where they make a hole in the sheep's tummy and all the air comes out?

Winkly · 31/01/2012 21:40

My belly did that when I had gallstone attacks. Felt awful, but even if I'd tried to push on through and go to work I couldn't, because none of my clothes fit. Lasted a few days, then my clothes would miraculously fit again.

SoggySocks · 31/01/2012 21:45

pmsl Miette - thanks for that Grin wonders if they do that with humans

I've always been better on a crap diet. I can guarantee that if I eat a packet of crisps and a mars bar for breakfast tomorrow, a pot noodle for lunch and a curry for tea - my stomach will shrink and my clothes will fit again - I'd probably also drop 2 lbs over night.

Tomorrow I'm going to have porridge oats and add a packet of crisps to my lunch with my pitta bread and yogurt.

I've also had the migraine from hell for the past 2 days btw and no amount of cocodamol is getting rid of the bugger.
