Going to an 80s party tonight. As usual I've given myself no time to work this out but I need a costume.

The only vaguely relevant item I have is a pair of doc martens (which I found in my wardrobe amazingly). Any ideas?

I was thinking some sort of siouxie Sioux / new wave / post-punk thing. But what do I need?

Heeeeellllllpppp!

Stripy tights in purple and black or red and black, bin liner for a t shirt, bangles and junk jewellery. Lots of black eyeliner and back combed hair?

Well I was 25 in 1985. Going out was a pair of narrow legged trousers which were high waisted and had a cross over tie sort of cumberbund with a dressy white shirt with a stand up collar. Worn with high heeled black patent or with the khaki coloured trousers I had bright red stilettos. OR I wore a black leather mini skirt with a crisp blouse with the collar turned up - with either sheer shiny tan coloured or black tights and black high heeled stilletos. Tended to wear an unstructured jacket with a silk lining and the sleeves turned up to show it off or if the shirt had a stripe in it, I would wear a matching fine wool crew neck sweater or cardigan thrown over my shoulders, ie, pink stripe - pink sweater, blue stripe - blue sweater.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 28/01/2012 12:49

You could go as Bananarama - ra-ra skirt, off-the-shoulder baggy t-shirt, spiked-up hair and loads of eyeliner. Can't remember their footwear otther than legwarmers but Docs should do.
I don't really 'see' Docs as particularly 80s, though unless maybe Dexy's Midnight Runners stylee.

Yup, as others have said, it's all about the hair and make up. Loving a big old messy backcomb with some CRIMPING if possible. Then blue eyeshadow, blue eyeliner. Denim jacket? Massive suit with huuuuge shoulder pads?

elvisaintdead · 28/01/2012 12:55

Anything neon in your wardrobe? DC have any neon gloves for example? Big earrings? Skinny jeans? Ra-ra skirt?

I lived in fluro/massive earrings/skinny stonewash jeans/ra-ra skirts/3 quarter length sleeves/massive bows and ribbons in my hair in the 80's. Oh and lace, preferably in bright pink!!

Limelight · 28/01/2012 14:02

Thanks everyone. Great ideas! Off to primarni to stock up scarves, lace, and assorted wonders. Oh! And my bezzy mate has a crimping thing. Who knew?!

Bit of a loss to me the 80s. I'm an early 90s kid too so it was all floor length Laura Ashley with DMs and unwashed hair I could sit on.
