ok my friend is a 20 year old single parent with a baby she is or was quiet happy in her flat until the other day, we were at hers and we heard some noise so we looked out of her window and the shop underneath her that had been empty for some time was open and a couple of freezers were being taken in so i said well maybe its gonna be a frozen food shop that would be brilliant but then yesterday the sign went up above the shop omg atwells after life its a bloody funeral directors now dont get me wrong they are needed but surely not a shop below a flat in a residential area my friend is now that terrified at going to bed above dead bodies that she has begged me to let her and baby spend the night at my house but my house is already overflowing sorry but this is notnright

SquishyCinnamonSwirls, have you been reading the Dresden Files perchance?

ENormaSnob · 26/01/2012 20:13

She needs to grow up.

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 26/01/2012 20:13

Actually are you sure it's not a necromaniacs knocking shop?

Thankgodforcaffeine · 26/01/2012 20:13

squishy good point, but I think we have overlooked ghosts.

Surely they are the worst of the lot?

Kladdkaka · 26/01/2012 20:13

Does she have a zombie armageddon survival plan?

Birdsgottafly · 26/01/2012 20:13

If you are a good friend then help her deal with her nervousness. Talk her through her fears.

There are advantages to living over a funeral palour, as others have said it's quiet and no one will break in.

It must be upsetting, though, if she has made a home out of the flat and now feels that she has to leave.

No whereyouleftit I've not, but I'll look them up now. I love horror and fantasy fiction.
Ghosts are good but poltergeists are even better. Bit of real action.

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 26/01/2012 20:15

Ooh it could be a necromaniacs knocking shop-cum-chip shop.

Spare rib anyone?

Jux · 26/01/2012 20:16

Unlikely anyone's going to break into a funeral home in the middle of the night. There will be very little noise. Lots of flowers. Very correct gentlemen wearing impeccable white shirts and good suits.

Sounds good to me.

TimeWasting · 26/01/2012 20:16

What does she think is going to happen?

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 26/01/2012 20:16

Seriously they're corpses. They won't hurt her.

Kladdkaka · 26/01/2012 20:16

Seriously though, I can understand it a bit. When I was a kid my uncle had a job as a grave digger/groundsman. His house was in the middle of the graveyard. I didn't sleep a wink when we stayed there.

TheCuntwormUnderfoot · 26/01/2012 20:17

Reassure her!

It's all good. Sensible sober owners. No noise late at night. Low fire risk, unlike a shop/takeaway especially. Very unlikely to be burgled.

Possibly one of the best neighbours you could have.

Funeral parlours are peaceful places which help to manage difficult times for folk. The owners will be sensitive, kind, supportive people.

I would much prefer that to the shops we have below our flat!!!

LaurieFairyCake · 26/01/2012 20:18

She's utterly daft. It's much worse to have an empty shop or a noisy late night convenience store.

Deaddies by their very nature are quiet.

And also loads of other irrationals peeps will be put off so it won't get burgled.

She's scored a good 'un really.

Get her in mumsnet and we'll all explain it to her.

laurenamium · 26/01/2012 20:18

I would rather a funeral shop than a pet shop, it's not like the dead people can escape like a tarantula or a snake! And it'll be nice and quiet and not noisy at night as others have said!

WhereYouLeftIt · 26/01/2012 20:18

Good point TimeWasting. Nervous does not seem an appropriate reaction.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 26/01/2012 20:18

Of course I'm not ashamed! Be sensible for a moment please.
These are dead people you're talking about, they're not going to harm her and she needs to have some common sense.
You need to tell her to be rational and think logically. There is nothing there to hurt her. In actual fact, as some have pointed out the change of use of the premises is actually in her favour with regard to safety.

TheProvincialLady · 26/01/2012 20:19

Well she can either move to a different flat, learn to love dead people (not in a necrophiliac kind of way, obviously) or grow up a bit. If she's old enough to have a baby she's old enough to know that dead people can't hurt you.

psketti · 26/01/2012 20:19

I think she's really lucky. You could end up over a betting shop, a kebab shop - all kind of late night noise or smells. she's got neither of these.

Susiewho · 26/01/2012 20:19

Nervous? Eh? Is your friend an anxious person usually? Why would she be nervous?

What does being 2, single and having a baby to do with it?

Confused! Confused

charleneanna · 26/01/2012 20:20

LaurieFairyCake thank you but with a lot of attitudes from idiots on here i wouldnt dreaming of recommending mumsnet to anyone
