to think that nearly 200 people being killed in Nigeria should be more newsworthy

What happened in Kano over the weekend is not even on the front pages of the so called international news websites like the BBC. I've had to search for any reporting on it.

Can you imagine if such a thing had happened to people in a rich country?

I think it's really sad that Africans dying isn't considered newsworthy. Are we really that racist?

OP posts:
foglike · 23/01/2012 22:44

Africa and every other continent has it's own page on the BBC website if they care to look here

I want my national news to be about my nations news.

World news tends to be about the economy or anything that indirectly affects us.

mojitomania · 23/01/2012 22:44

????

What do you want me to say? People group and that's human nature, people identify and that's human nature. This is a non-argument really. It's not about racism in my mind.

BandOMothers · 23/01/2012 22:46

Of COURSE its racist. Idiot people. Can you see 200 or even FIFTY Australians dying like that being ignored? What if they were from Canada? France? Maybe we'd hear then? Where does it end...maybe once the people are from an African or Asian country we just don't care? Hmm

mojitomania · 23/01/2012 22:47

This tiny little island called England has been bamboozled by every different nation lately, it's enough. We need to shut the bloody doors. It's not a "racist" thing it's common sense.

mojitomania · 23/01/2012 22:48

its not about not caring BandO it's about too bloody much... far too bloody much

Kewcumber · 23/01/2012 22:49

"World news tends to be about the economy or anything that indirectly affects us." EH? Confused - I thought it was about news. Shooting in America, in Norway, banning burka in schools in France all news - I didn't have to search any special interests page or try to tune into the news at ten on some digital African/European/American channel.

Someone decides what is news and there is undoubtedly (in my mind) a colour value placed on events along with a complex mix of other factors as mentioned in my first post about 15 inches up (or down).

I do find it interesting that some people don't think that. That there is some hard and fast rule about what goes into the news and no judgement about what is newsworthy is used.

MCT76 · 23/01/2012 22:51

I agree: it is definitely racist with a pinch of imperialism thrown in for good measure...what happens in the 'third world' is somehow to be expected and therefore not worthy of mainstream reporting.

Compare it to the widespread news headlines devoted to the cruise ship sinking and you'll get the picture: Western, well-to-do tourists on holiday seem to matter more than 200 poor Nigerians. Very depressing yet unsurprising.

MMMarmite · 23/01/2012 22:51

"What do you want me to say? People group and that's human nature, people identify and that's human nature. This is a non-argument really. It's not about racism in my mind."

If you care more about the lives of white people than about black people, surely that's racism? Confused What do you think racism is mojito?

foglike · 23/01/2012 22:52

Absolute hogwash.

People wanting to whip us as racists by not covering African news is just silly.

Anyone wanting to self flagellate should pick an appropriately marked toilet cubicle.

mojitomania · 23/01/2012 22:53

Im working class and I have watched the surge of just far too many, it's causing major problems in our economy and that's a fact. Britain has massive problems and whilst that is happening forgive me if I'm not concentrating on overseas matters at the present. It has effected working class far more than upper or middle, again a fact.

Imperfectionist · 23/01/2012 22:54

But BandOMothers, 200 Nigerians and Nigeria do not have as many links to the UK as 200 Australians and Australia or 200 French and France. I know Nigeria is a member of the Commonwealth and the UK does have strong ties, with many Nigerians living in the UK and strong trade and other ties, but not as much as a European country, North America or Australia.

If 200 people had died in Guyana, Guatemala or Peru it would not have received more coverage. Similarly in countries like Vietnam, Mongolia or Malaysia (to pick some random ones).

There has to be a news agenda, we cannot publish all of the news in the world, and because news is published in a newspaper or on a website, we have a front page and a homepage, so some stories receive greater priority. Organizations had a readership to cater for, otherwise their readers would stop reading them.

And people read news they are interested in - usually driven by wanting to read about something familiar to them and something they have a link to. It's not necessarily racism.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 23/01/2012 22:54

Having racism comments thrown down ones throat is the thing that tends to stick

?????

What does that actually mean?

And why is it related to my comment?

My experience shows that phrase is most definately used by people who care very much about colour and you have posted absolutly nothing to disabuse me of that notion.

You seemed determined that anyone who mentions racism is hysterical (apart from you of course) yet your posts are pretty much the most hysterical on this thread.

It is also quite hard to work out what your point is.

What is your point.

Smile
mojitomania · 23/01/2012 22:55

I might not have a job, my son probably wont have one... so forgive me for not looking at nigerian news at the moment and yes that is due to immigration or lack of border controls. Its a blood fact

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 23/01/2012 22:55

Oh you are working class!
I see.

So that makes it ok for you to spout bollocks and say they are FACTS.

Hmm
Whatmeworry · 23/01/2012 22:56

It was a big story on Radio 4 today, it's hard to know what more they could have done in the news time they have given they were covering the Benefit cuts, Ship disaster, Syrian crisis, US election etc etc.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 23/01/2012 22:56

You are a racist and an ignorant one.

There I have said it.
Norty me.

mojitomania · 23/01/2012 22:57

Well Mrs DeVere are you having problems? do you send your son to a private school, is his life nicely mapped out? I laugh at middle/upperclass - they all drink in putney/parsons green - don't see many multicultural faces in there funny enough

foglike · 23/01/2012 22:57

Of course news nearer home is more important to most of us.

Specialist news channels on sky are available for anyone interested in in depth news from Africa/Asia etc.

That's why they are there.

MMMarmite · 23/01/2012 22:59

mojito you haven't answered my question. And I don't see why arguments about immigration are relevant to the question of why 200 deaths in Nigeria are less well reported than 200 deaths in Germany or Australia.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 23/01/2012 22:59

Hahahahahahahah
Twat

I am a working class mother of five and I live in east london.

I have four boys.

All brown. So they will be ok, bound to get a good job what with all the darkies nicking the work and all that.

foglike · 23/01/2012 22:59

That's just nasty OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere.

Just shrug is off mojitomania she hasn't got a scooby doo.

TheFallenMadonna · 23/01/2012 23:00

So, mojito, roundtable said to you

"mojito regardless of the majority of a colour in a country are you seriously trying to say that it is less newsworthy because they are not white?"

And you said

"No Im not Roundtable, I'm not saying that at all"

And now you are saying

" People group and that's human nature, people identify and that's human nature".

So that is what you were saying?

foglike · 23/01/2012 23:00

Are you trying to shame someone by mentioning your childrens skin colour Mrsdevere?

That's absolutely disgusting.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 23/01/2012 23:01

Havent I Fog?

Why is that then?

BTW chucking in a bit of outdated slang doesnt make you street.

Just sayin.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 23/01/2012 23:02

Now you are getting desperate Fog.
If you think me mentioning my boy's skin is disgusting.

I was merely addressing the 'i drink in putney and there arnt many brown faces round there' rantings.
