being called 'mum' in Sainsbury's

AIBU to think it was a bit strange (and tactless) for the cashier on Sainsbury's to repeatedly address me as 'mum', e.g. did, you get everything you wanted, Mum? How many bags did you use Mum? Have you got a nectar card Mum? I didn't have any children with me, and the only suggestion that I might be a Mum, was the bag of chicken nuggets on the conveyor belt? Or is the stress of motherhood really that obvious from my appearance?!

Could it have been Ma'am?

Are you sure it wasn't mam as in madam? Weird if not but I know a cashier who calls all ladies mam as is tradition I believe in his culture.

TheUnsinkableTitanic · 21/01/2012 15:19

very odd to call you Mum

what kayano and DOG said

but if she did, YANBU

Sposh · 21/01/2012 15:19

Who says 'ma'am' these days? Shock Grin

Was english this person's first language?

WorraLiberty · 21/01/2012 15:19

If you didn't have kids with you, that is weird isn't it? Confused

You have said "Yes love, and when you get home I want you to tidy your room"

cheekyseamonkey · 21/01/2012 15:20

Did she think you gave her up for adoption? Weird. YANBU.

WorraLiberty · 21/01/2012 15:20

*should

Lueji · 21/01/2012 15:20

It's just the accent.

Ismeyes · 21/01/2012 15:20

Are you in Exeter?

ZeldaUpNorth · 21/01/2012 15:20

Maybe she stalks you on here ans was trying to give the game away. Did u get naice ham? Wink

Sposh · 21/01/2012 15:21

Do people in Exeter routinely call strangers 'mum'? Confused

tethersend · 21/01/2012 15:21

If it definitely wasn't ma'am, then a cheery "Yes thank you, twat" should suffice.

Kayano · 21/01/2012 15:21

I don't quite believe she called you mum if
You had no kids with you, probably a misunderstanding....

joben · 21/01/2012 15:21

Not sure if English was her first language, although she appeared not to have an accent. My DP reckons she must have seen me in there before with the children and recognised me (I do go quite often, I suppose)

YY the Sainsbo near me is the same .Alot of the male staff call women 'madam' (which I take as being polite) but it sounds like mam sometimes.

Unless they mean Madam as in a Madam in a brothel. In which case, less polite Grin

joben · 21/01/2012 15:22

Not in Exeter, East London

Salmotrutta · 21/01/2012 15:22

I reckon it was Ma'am too but came out sounding like "Mum".

Obviously a very polite cashier Grin

Ismeyes · 21/01/2012 15:22

No, there is a cashier in Exeter Sainsbury's that does this. If the OP is in Exeter then I can back up that the lady is indeed saying 'mum'.

Sposh · 21/01/2012 15:23

I see women with children on a regular basis, it has never made me feel I should call them Mum. Unless it was my mum. But seeing as how she's been dead for almost four years it's not a word I use much these days.

Ismeyes · 21/01/2012 15:23

Cross posts...maybe she has moved Grin or perhaps its a new Sainsbury's thing to check if we are really listening when they talk to us whilst we are tryin to pack our shopping!

MmeLindor. · 21/01/2012 15:23

Was likely ma'am but said in a forrin accent then.

Polite cashiers you have. Round my mum's way they call you "hen" or "love".

UrsulaBuffay · 21/01/2012 15:25

Do you look like the Queen?

joben · 21/01/2012 15:27

have to say, it was defo Mum, she said, I work with students who are 90% EAL, from all over the world so am used to forrin accents, and it really did sound like Mum. Have to say I really think she was just being friendly and informal and wasn't bothered by it, but having had miscarriages in the past, did wonder how I would have felt if she had said this to someone who was ttc.
