to think that not all these children can take part in the olympics?

I have two very sporty children, who like to partake in all sports, so haven't specialised in any particular one.

Today at gymnastics, 2 parents said that their children were trying out for the olympics and if they didn't get into 2012, they would be going for 2016. One child is 9 and and one child is 14. Neither are particularly outstanding, best in the group, but there are higher groups in our gym club and it is not an outstanding gym club for talent.

In the last week 5 parents have told me that their child has a try out for swimming for 2012 olympics.

AIBU to think that I can't believe that I know all the children that are trying out for it? Or that there are a large number of people trying out for it?

I am unsure whether these parents are dillusional and believe that their child will be in the olympics in 5 months time, or whether they are just outright liars.

A huge amount will be trying out for it, how many compete is a different matter

I think there will be a huge number of children trying out for the olympics and most if not all the children you know will get knocked out in the early local heats.

I would say they just want their kids to feel positive and reach for the stars :) Nobody is going to qualify for the olympics because a judge says 'aw bless!' so why not go for it for the laugh if nothing else?

I know one 14yo who was asked to take part in a training program for Olympic swimming, but who turned it down. It is isn't impossible but a 9yo?! Confused I would think the parents had got the wrong end of the stick. There are so many programs saying 'Olympic' blah-di-blah this year that I could imagine it happening.
