You have probably seen a load us moaning about these cuts and the reforms to disability benefits. You may well sit back and think, who cares im not disabled.

remember that whilst it may not affect you NOW, we are all but a cruel twist of fate away from disability.

Well yesterday the Government won a major battle. The house of lords failed to agree to "our" attempts to pause the reforms to DLA

To help clarify the position for people that don't know These reforms mean that people with CANCER will have to PROVE to a pen pusher, not a Dr or trained medic, why they cannot work.

Someone in a wheelchair who can self propel will be considered mobile and therefore no longer qualify for mobility allowance.

families with disabled children will have the benefits cut. This is only the highlighted version. There are far far more policies, equally disturbing and far more wide reaching.

they have declared that they will lose 20% of all current claims. Despite their own figures stating that only 0.3% of claims are incorrect, so that is 19.7% of GENUINE claims being refused.

All we have asked is that they pause the changes to these reforms. That they listen to those charities that support the disabled and their carers. They they take on board advice given to them by people who live this life every day.
All we want is that any assessments are carried out by trained medical staff, not pen pushers who have a city and guilds in admin!

They have lied and mislead the public. That is not democracy.
These people are given their position of power in order to voice OUR opinions. How is it a democracy if they fail to listen? it is wrong, simply wrong that they are able to get away with lying to the people that they are supposed to represent. How is that democracy? How can we call war upon the Gulf and demand that they adopt western democracy when we know it to be a sham?

If that disgusts you as much as it does me, then you MUST sign and share this petition. Get your voice heard by those employed by YOU to listen to YOU

Share this link to everyone. on your twitter, your facebook, via email anyway you like. Some things are worth spamming over.

And once you are finished signing that, email your MP. Someone was recently fobbed off by their MP because "90% of my constituents aren't interested"
I don't believ that. I believe that 90% of his constituents weren't aware of these policy changes and that they were being force fed stories demonising the disabled.

We need to show then that we do care. That we will not allow this injustice to stand.

It is democracy though isn't it? Democracy doesn't mean stopping doing something just because a bunch of people say they don't like it.

TigerStar · 18/01/2012 11:53

ValarMorghulis · 18/01/2012 11:59

well it kinda does really.
MP's are not elected because of their opinions. They are elected because they tell us their policies closely match the opinions we have for teh way the country should be run.

If they propose acting in a way that we don't want, they should stop.

We need people to tell them that we don't want these reforms to go ahead yet. That they need to think about them and iron out the issues.

they have lied and mislead the public in order to sweep these reforms under the carpet. That is not democracy. That is doing as they like no matter what we think.

How have they lied and misled the public? Sorry but that's not clear from post .
And maybe some of the public do agree with these reforms .
I am not saying I do (as have signed) but there is a difference in not liking a policy and Saying it was introduced via lies and is in democratic

Gigondas · 18/01/2012 12:06

If they propose acting in a way we don't want...

But not everyone might want same thing- so what then? Afaik this has gone through commons and by skin of its teeth the lords. It might not be outcome I want but I don't think it's undemocratic (If you accept our political system is a democracy). If you don't then isn't that a different question about whether our current political system is a truly fair way to govern by will of majority .

NinkyNonker · 18/01/2012 12:08

It would be democracy if it were done properly, or even if they had follwed their own rules/guidelines. I have yet to meet one (informed/educated) person who thinks these sweeping, indiscrimate cuts on the most vulnerable in society are a good thing. A society is judged on how it treats its weakest members, remember that.

Anyhoo, I have signed this and it has been on my FB wall for a while...will repost it as well.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 18/01/2012 12:12

I signed this on the last thread, it is the same petition right? Just checking because I can't remember the last one clearly enough.

Avenged · 18/01/2012 12:28

Although I'm in Northern Ireland and the laws over here are slightly different, we do take most of our laws and whatnot from Parliament. I have signed because I hate to see people, who are disabled, being shafted by these cuts.
