The thing is, the internet is precisely what makes it so easy to have multiple/fake personas, because while in rl you have to have a good memory to be a good lier, if you're a fake online it's all down there in writing, so should you need to, you can simply go back over old postings to see what you've written and ensure you're not too inconsistent.

I never get why people bother name changing for some threads. It doesn't seem worth it when recounting how someone we don't know looked at you funny or what SIL said.
