If you're shopping around for cheaper options, fgs check ask for pictures of previous work from the cheaper baker.

If you've never been to Cake Wrecks, you should. This link is a good start as to why you need to do your research. Your auntie/friend/grandma might mean well but you could end up with one of these:

And just to add, I love cake (see the name), I'm told I bake well, etcetc, and my decorating abilities are just fine for normal cakes, but nowhere near the examples in this thread. I didn't have an extravagant theme cake at my wedding, and I thought it was just lovely. I think homemade cakes are perfect.

BUT if you're going into it with dreams of a big castle or something along those lines, and you end up with something less than perfect, it'll upset you on a day when you'll have more than enough to worry over.

stealthsquiggle · 13/02/2012 17:01

much nicer sandcastle cake although I would still be peeved as that topper isn't edible either - why, I wonder? I am sure I could recreate that out of something edible.

valiumredhead · 13/02/2012 17:02

Oh wow that is gorgeous stealth!

Blu · 13/02/2012 17:15

I don't mind a cake that looks as if it is what it is - something made by human hand.

OhdearNigel · 13/02/2012 17:16

Ah, the joys of Cakewrecks Grin It regularly makes me LOL, DH cannot understand why I am curled up double in fits of laughter at "love to my hoe from ur pimp"

OhdearNigel · 13/02/2012 17:17

Stealth, perhaps the bride and groom wanted the topper as a keepsake ?

stealthsquiggle · 13/02/2012 17:20

Could be, Nigel - that would make sense. I have occasionally considered making figures, etc out of fimo rather than icing for that reason and because no-one ever eats the decorations anyway but have an illogical desire to make cakes 100% edible.

OP if you're South Wales & West based, check out this site - the creator is the wife of a colleague so can vouch for her! As it happens, the pic on her home page is seaside theme :)

Thank you thank you thank you for sending me in the direction of cakewrecks.

I have made cakes professionally for a while and do get a bit fed up with the occassional raised eyebrows when I quote - if you want a 3 tier bespoke cake which is going to take me 2 hours to bake and at least 4 to decorate then the reality is it is going to cost you significantly more than £30 Hmm

There is always one that says maybe I/DH/my sister/next doors dog will do it. I shall keep laminates of some of the best cake wrecks on hand for just those moments Grin

GetOrfMoiiLand · 13/02/2012 17:33

I do love cakewrecks. There are also some examples of really beautifully decorated cakes on there as well (usually copied terribly badly by some amateur baker)

OhdearNigel · 13/02/2012 17:41

I have to confess to being a bit Shock at that cake decorator charging an additional £20 for doing a rainbow sponge. I make coloured sponges and can't really see how you can justify the extra money for something which costs pennies for the paste colouring and hardly any extra cooking time. It takes me maybe 20 extra minutes to colour up the sponges

OhdearNigel · 14/02/2012 08:28

Stealth, I also have an abhorrence of stencils/feathers/moulds/bought in figures. I learnt my craft old-school when you couldn't buy lettering moulds; most of the "professional" cakes I see seem to include a large amount of non-edible elements and decorative features that have been made using a gadget.

Nobody seems to be able to pipe anymore.

marmiteandjam · 14/02/2012 08:50

Didn't you post about this before OP??!!

LucyLastik · 14/02/2012 09:03

has anyone seen this one:

Las Vegas Wedding Cake

clevercow · 14/02/2012 21:36

well just read the messages and yep i'm on the thread.

i previously just wanted to back myself up i clearly state what goes into the cake, all of it was designed step by step with the couple & worked closely with the customers to make sure they got the cake that they wanted.

they wanted a big cake but didn't have many at the wedding - hence the dummy tiers!

for those who don't make these types of wedding cakes for a living you just won't understand so it's pointless me trying to explain the costs, overheads and time involved. in fact how about you contact other professional company's such as miss ingredient, speciality cakes or cakes by Suzanne for quotes on the exact same commission - handmade piggin board and all, to see what costs they come up with?!

i think that when the person you are talking about is on here also it is quite rude to say the things that have been said, its more of a personal attack rather than help to the original poster of the message - who lets face it just wants a cake like this to fit in with her budget.

i am not a child i am a mother who is self taught and like most other cake makers works until 2am most mornings to make sure the cake is as fresh as it can be, if i worked out my hourly rate it would be half the minimum wage and i click onto here to see what people think about this cake which was magnificent, so why do i do it? because i love my job! i love seeing the end product and i love to see my customers faces light up when they collect their cake, I'm sorry most of you have to pass negative comments about it.

oh and of course i didn't mean invasion lol, just get a little upset that i make the effort in paying taxes etc and most other people who bake from home and have facebook as there pr tool don't pay it!

StealthPenguin · 23/02/2012 08:54

Oi, stealthsquiggle - it was ME! Not StealthPolarBear!!

God, get it right will you?! I found that cake, I deserve the credit!
Wink

There are some flamin' gorgeous cakes on here, but some disasters too! Eeeeeeep!

MissBerta · 23/02/2012 08:54

Aww, that sandcastle cake is cute & clever but I really, really wish there was a smaller starfish!

stealthsquiggle · 27/02/2012 12:01

Sorry, Stealthpenguin (Artic, Antartic, mammal, bird - details) Grin

Lueji · 27/02/2012 12:26

For 500£ I would have expected edible seashells.

Anonymumous · 27/02/2012 12:53

Blimey - £500 for that?! I made my son a three-tier sandcastle cake a couple of years back - it was just as good as that, if not better (even if I do say so myself!). The point about a sandcastle is that it doesn't have to look polished or perfect or professional - which means anyone can do it. Get your Mum to have a go or something!

(Tip: soft brown sugar makes really good 'sand'! :) )
