The (first) one StealthPolarBear linked to, OTOH, is a proper work of art and I cannot even begin to imagine how it was transported (in bits, I would assume).

nickelDorritt · 13/02/2012 15:45

this was my wedding cake

stealthsquiggle · 13/02/2012 15:46

Bender that Octopus is fab

GetOrfMoiiLand · 13/02/2012 15:46

I can see the artistry and time involved in making cakes, and lots are incredibly impressive.

But, I don't actually like cake, so would never envisage actually spending such a ridiculous amount of money on a cake, no matter how pretty. £500 is extortionate, really. I know people spend a lot on weddings, but really that is madness imo.

valiumredhead · 13/02/2012 15:47

I think that is very reasonable for a cake, my mum made my sister and my wedding cakes and it took forever! They were beautiful though :)

stealthsquiggle · 13/02/2012 15:50

I think the price is entirely reasonable - for a beautiful cake with, as OhdearNigel says, hours and hours and hours invested in it. That one isn't, though (especially taking into account how much of it is not actually cake Hmm).

Everything to do with weddings is more fraught. I do loads of cakes for family and friends (not for profit, or even for costs, just for love) but I would never take on the responsibility of a wedding cake - it's just too important to everyone concerned.

Lueji · 13/02/2012 15:51

I love it, but it doesn't look like there's a lot of work involved in this particular cake, actually.
Or maybe because it doesn't look like it. Hmm

Oh just read the people were bought in - less impressed now tbh.

valiumredhead · 13/02/2012 16:11

Tax invasion

GetOrfMoiiLand · 13/02/2012 16:17

Actually I take that back re £500 is extortionate - I don't mean to say that cake bakers are ripping people off. I can see that these things take hours and the stress of making a wedding cake must be immense.

I still wouldn't pay that much for a cake in a month of Sundays though. It's just a cake.

flyingspaghettimonster · 13/02/2012 16:21

Sand castle cakes are easy! I bought premade carrot cakes and added cream cheese frosting and crushed digestives. Chocolate seashells for decoration around door ways. Pieces of chocolate flake for crenellations again covered in cream cheese frosting and crushed biccies. Try it... can get little people from eBay made to look like you and hubby.

Blu · 13/02/2012 16:26

This whole cake-making extravaganza is getting out of hand. Talk about 'pimp your cake'.
Vulgar.
IMO.
I don't expect many people to agree.

I agree with you actually, Blu.

Pudden · 13/02/2012 16:42

nope: I can't see that being worth £500 at all esp with bought in toppers and oasis and biscuit turrets

"hand sieved digestive biscuits" :o

GetOrfMoiiLand · 13/02/2012 16:43

Pudden - they are hand-sieved rich tea biscuits. Not digestives fgs. She has standards. Grin

GetOrfMoiiLand · 13/02/2012 16:45

So £500 for a fruit cake, a hand decorated board, another cake, 2 and a half packets of rich tea, several hours of hand sieving, some dolls house furniture, some seashells of the beach and a job lot of oasis. Grin

WorraLiberty · 13/02/2012 16:45

Oh I love that cake!

I also love the way the bride's little dress looks

GetOrfMoiiLand · 13/02/2012 16:45

OFF the beach

tsk

valiumredhead · 13/02/2012 16:45

Is it a fruit cake or sponge?

GetOrfMoiiLand · 13/02/2012 16:47

It's not clear, but think the rock is a fruit cake and the castle is another cake (assume sppnge).

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 13/02/2012 16:47

Most of it isn't really cake! That's why I'm so surprised at how much it cost.

I loved my wedding cake. Grandpa made it, and he did exactly one cake, which was Standard 1970s White With Bits On. It was wonderful.

AND it had enough brandy in it to put you over the limit with a 1" slice. The man could bake. Grin
