to be annoyed at this company

I placed an order on thehut.com on Friday at 5.15pm and realised later that I had ordered the wrong item (I followed a link from Google Shopping which only matched some of my search term, i.e. I searched 'game name pc' but the result only said game name and not the system). As it was saying dispatch would be on the Monday and that my order was still being processed, I attempted to cancel the order about 6.50 on the Account Order page using the cancel button. Came back an hour later to see the cancel button had reappeared and my order had not been cancelled. Tried again, but this time the status had changed to "Awaiting Despatch" (it had NOT been on my first try) and I was unable to cancel.

On Saturday I rang customer service twice to attempt to cancel the order. First person I spoke to said she didn't see why I shouldn't be able to cancel it as it wasn't due to be shipped until Monday and she would contact IT to cancel the order. When I didn't receive an email confirming the cancellation I rang back and spoke to someone else who said he would raise a ticket with IT to cancel it. (Not sure why IT would cancel orders, surely the warehouse or shipping dept should be better?)

Then got an email at 5.05pm this evening telling me that my order had been shipped! I rang up Customer Services (AGAIN-- and it's an 0844 number) to see what was going on and was told that once an order is in the warehouse they are unable to and/or it is extremely rare to be able to cancel (not what was I told by the previous two people, by the way). I asked where the items are kept and was told in the warehouse (??? Confused). They require a return authorisation number in order to return anything, so I asked for this rather than wasting any more time/money ringing again later. The cs rep told me that this number only lasts for a couple of days so anything I get now may not be valid by the time the order arrives/I send it back and that Royal Mail will refuse to accept any packages from me without this number (which I fail to see how RM will refuse to accept and deliver a package from/for me as I am paying, but he insisted it's not the company's policy, RM will just return it to me without thehut.com knowing about it Hmm)

I don't understand why it was apparently "awaiting despatch" on Friday evening when there was no intention of ever posting it until Monday and why the hell I couldn't cancel this order when I tried 1.5 hours after placing it (this length of time is reasonable to me!).

Have since googled the company and they have pretty terrible reviews, so perhaps I was being unreasonable to buy from them in the first place...

To be fair, it's not exactly their fault that you didn't check what you were ordering before paying is it?

frangelico · 09/01/2012 18:30

It is my fault for ordering the game for the wrong games system but I think they are being unreasonable for not allowing cancellations.

They should allow you to cancel before dispatch. Sounds like they are trying to get you to take delivery of the game in the hope you will keep it. When it arrives in the post just refuse to accept it, that way at least you do not have to pay return post.

I agree, refuse delivery. Then claim a refund.

MrsTwinks · 09/01/2012 19:01

I had a similar problem with tesco direct before christmas, the only way I could "cancel" was to turn up at the store to collect and hand it straight back for refund. I think its a ploy by the companies to make it so difficult that people dont change their minds etc.

Honeydragon · 09/01/2012 19:04

You have every right to cancel a purchase whether you fucked up or not.

I'd refuse delivery and ask for a refund.

bookbird · 09/01/2012 19:06

I was just thinking about ordering from them too. Great discounts on games at the mo. should be alright as long as I don't need to return.

Btw, Log on to www.saynoto0870.com to get an alternative number to the 0844 number you're having to call.

frangelico · 09/01/2012 19:46

MrsTwinks I think that's exactly what they were trying to do. The last guy I spoke to came up with every reason under the sun as to why it couldn't be cancelled and he couldn't organise a return right then. I just kept getting told, "well no one you spoke to guaranteed your order could be cancelled" and "once it's in the warehouse it can't be cancelled" (despite already being in the warehouse). I'm sure that it went to 'awaiting despatch' after I'd tried to cancel because I'd tried to cancel-- how can they claim awaiting dispatch when it wasn't sent until days later?

Bookbird I've since looked them up and LOTS of people have posted negative reviews saying things like order wasn't sent, or they were charged twice, or broken or used items were sent etc. Game for game, I don't think they're cheaper than amazon, play.com or zavvi.com. (Also, thanks for the link!)

Under distance selling laws you legally have seven days to cancel any order. They can't have different rules, its the law.
