where the caller gets the privilege of selecting what AGE of woman he wants to chat to (for £1.50 a minute) ? Maximum age 49 , by the way

Really, how have we come to this?

Kayano · 08/01/2012 00:26

Because people will pay and have different tastes and are gullible as fcuk

WorraLiberty · 08/01/2012 00:28

I'm not sure what you're saying here?

Do you think people shouldn't be allowed to select the age of those they want to chat to?

If you're paying £1.50 a minute, surely you'd want some sort of choice?

For example, a 40yr old man might not want to chat to an 18yr old girl...and equally an 18yr old girl would probably prefer someone nearer her own age too?

Kayano · 08/01/2012 00:30

People have been putting preferred ages in the personal pages forever

Wltm woman/ man 30-35 etc

I just... Don't care lol

lubeybooby · 08/01/2012 00:31

I looked into working for one once

You have to make up 6 different charachters all with different physical features, eg a dominatrix one, a 'mature' lady, a young 18 yr old cheerleader type, a bored housewife, etc etc

You pick up the phone and are informed by computer which persona you need to talk in, and then take the call.

So it's all a load of pish anyway and whatever the caller wants they still get a woman at home doing her ironing and rolling their eyes at them.

Jasper · 08/01/2012 00:35

exactly Lubey. That was my point really, that the whole thing was a pile of horseshit .

How lonely and stupid would you have to be to call one of those lines?

OP posts:
Jasper · 08/01/2012 00:36

lubey, what was the pay like?

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 08/01/2012 00:38

Oh I see, you're saying the age thing is crap? In that case I totally agree.

I don't know about 'how have we come to this' though cos we came to that in the 80's if I remember rightly.

You'd think the fact the internet 'caught on' and brought 'real' people together, would put a stop to people wanting to pay for that sort of chat...but obviously not.

CalamityKate · 08/01/2012 00:41

Yeah I used to work for a chatline for a while and the more "personas" you have, the more callers you're likely to get. Stands to reason.

Jasper · 08/01/2012 00:44

were most of the callers drunk?

OP posts:
CalamityKate · 08/01/2012 00:45

I don't think I ever had a drunk one.

Jasper · 08/01/2012 00:48

what were they like? Did they know it was a big con and they were playing along for "fun"?

OP posts:
LeBOF · 08/01/2012 00:48

I knew a bloke who worked for a Tarot line. They got the same anxious callers regularly, and just fed them gubbins. He is no more a fortune teller than Jeremy Clarkson is a ballet dancer.

CalamityKate · 08/01/2012 00:53

I'm as sure as I can be that they are aware that there's at least a possibility that you're not in fact lying on your bed wearing nothing but a negligee and a smile - in the same way that when you watch TV you know that the actors are all playing parts.

I worked in a sex chatline office for 2 and a half years. I had different names for each age persona and blokes did call when they were pissed high or sober. I had a couple call me once because the female was bisexual and wanted to explore that fantasy in a safe context that didnt involve bringing a third party into the bedroom.

Bogeyface · 08/01/2012 00:55

What pissed me off when I saw one of those ads a couple of years back where the words you texted depending on the age you wanted.

18-25 was HOT
26-35 was SEXY

50+ was MATURE

Mature I was a bit Hmm at but what pissed me off most was that the 36-45 age group (ie, mine!) was OLDER.

Thats it, just OLDER. Thanks a fecking bunch!

Bogeyface · 08/01/2012 00:55

I should add that the same add is being shown now but with different text words, I wonder why!

Bogeyface · 08/01/2012 00:56

*ad

CalamityKate · 08/01/2012 00:59

I strongly disapprove of the text chat service. As far as I'm aware, the job involves typing from a computer but PRETENDING to be a real, live girl who may well be up for meeting the bloke at some stage. You have to send pictures, and basically string them along. I find that dishonest and cruel.

I would assume people get the same thing out of webcam chats where the woman does things to themselves on cam but instead use their imagination. Its roleplay and people like things like that and they are more than aware the person on the end of the phone is playing a part.

just like we all know tom cruise is an angry little man but can play any part in his films and you just dont care that he is infact an asshat.

Jasper · 08/01/2012 01:15

I am NOT sneering in the slightest.
As I said in the title, it makes me
SAD

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 08/01/2012 01:19

Why does it make you sad though?

People tend to spend their own money on whatever they want...whatever they enjoy spending it on.

Personally I think they're a little odd for paying for sex chat nowadays when they can get it for free on certain internet sites (Facebook being the main one) but it's up to them.

stupid was probably not the kindest word to use.

I meant who would be fooled by the idea they were actively selecting someone to suit their preferences? Did they really believe this?( if yes, I somewhat unkindly called them stupid ) or are they so lonely they are prepared to pay for the fantasy?

Sad that companies set themselves up to make money from people who pay to fool themselves that " hot, sexy girls " are flirting with them.

Sad that men pay to go along with this instead of forming relationships with real people.
Sad that some men with partners / wives will do this in secret.
Sad that real live women are shown on the adverts tarted up in a stereotypical manner , pouting into the camera while rolling around on silk bedlinen in their underwear while coiling the telephone flex round their fingers.
Sad that feckless men might run up large phone bills that they can't pay
