Seriously struggling with not smoking. Been sniping at DH all day. Just want to smash his face in tell him to leave me alone. Have a NRT patch on. Even yelled at the cat. Good god does this get any easier. Have turned the house upside down looking for a cig. There are none Angry

When I quit smoking, the first 3 days were the worst. I was seriously on the verge of telling DH to chain me in the corner because I felt sooooo insane.

After 3 days, it got a little better, but still rough. After a week it was okay-ish. After a couple weeks, it was really really fine.

Just try to get through this first week and it will be soooo much better. Also beg your family to be patient with you for a week so they have some sense that this will end soon too.

Good luck!!!

CailinDana · 02/01/2012 13:56

How long have you been off them? Hopefully like bohemian says you'll feel better in a few days. I know that seems like an eternity but hang in there and you'll make it.

MilitaryWag · 02/01/2012 13:58

I quit today.... so pathetically, it has been less than a day Blush

You have 72 hours of physical craving to get through - that is 24 MORE than Heroin! You then have 2 weeks of social craving.

Cigarettes are the hardest things to give up and when you do you will be amazing!!!! Smile

Start to count down the hours - do anything to take your mind off it - do not do anything you don't like - you need to be as kind as possible to yourself for this time.

CailinDana · 02/01/2012 14:00

That's not pathetic at all. It's bound to be hard at the beginning but please do try to stick with it.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/01/2012 14:00

And cut out the 'pathetic' ffs - YOU DON'T NEED IT. Kindness only.

dreamingbohemian · 02/01/2012 14:01

The first day is the worst! Don't give up!

Try to keep yourself as busy as possible so you don't have time to think about it.

Drink and eat things that don't go well with the taste of cigs (I drank lots of milk)

Find something to keep your hands busy... my DH was a saint and played cards with me for hours Blush

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 02/01/2012 14:03

Nicotine will be out of your system in 24 hours; the habit is the hardest thing to break. Tell yourself you're a non-smoker and find something to do to take your mind off it.... and stop snapping, really. If your husband snaps back at you, you'll feel worse - and look for a cigarette.

Get Allen Carr's book - "Easyway to stop smoking", it's great. :)

whogivesastuff · 02/01/2012 14:04

i suppose thats why junkies find it so hard to cope with going cold turkey and it drives them to do insane things

addiction is so destructive isnt it

Bewilderedmum · 02/01/2012 14:09

Pmsl! I saw the thread title, and thought "I wonder if thats MW!"

Keep going mate! am 13 hours in meself, and feel so mean I could go bear hunting with a whip.the NRT gum takes the edge off, but I feel decidedly out of sorts. Went to take the children swimming, but ds1 has lost his shorts - I want to sell him for medical experiments.

Take it hour by hour if needs be - and get your £7 ready to put in a jar for tonight :o

The first few days are shit, I was bereft.
I got through it with patches but stupidly thought a year later 'well I'm safe, I can just have one', BAD idea.
I can honestly say that after the first couple of weeks it does get easier, so stick with it.
I failed longterm and will try again.
It is doable, but wanting to kill everybody in your immediate vicinity is perfectly normal.

Don't know why I posted this twice Blush

toweraboveyou · 02/01/2012 17:42

OP, YANBU for being in a foul mood. You are doing well and should stick at it. However, there is a part of your post that concerns me. If a man had come on here and written ''Been sniping at DW all day. Just want to smash her face in'' there would be uproar at his jokey threat of violence. Is domestic violence ever funny?

MilitaryWag · 02/01/2012 17:50

Have made it this far husband is buried under the patio with the cat without snapping too badly. Back at work tomorrow. Now THAT really will be the test!

toweraboveyou As someone who has been on the receiving end of it, no is the answer to your question as I think you already know.

SiamoNellaMerda · 02/01/2012 17:58

That, toweraboveyou is just sniping for the sake of sniping. No need whatsoever to raise that issue here in the context of what the OP posted.
