It is barbarian to "clink" wine glasses

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 01/01/2012 19:46

is it not?

I raise my glass at toasts and find my neighbour on occasion attempting to clash his or her glass against mine.

Ugh, no?

I'm not bothered too much about the clinking, but if someone doesn't make eye contact I get all Hmm

RosemaryandThyme · 01/01/2012 20:33

Very un-christian I'd have thought - sin't it to ward off evil spirits, couscous weevils and the like ?

TalcAndTurnips · 01/01/2012 20:38

We have different toasts for each day of the week.

Today is Absent Friends Wine

AnyoneforTurps · 01/01/2012 20:41

It's very common. I still do it though Grin.

tooearlymustdache · 01/01/2012 20:42

i'd have thunk it more barbarian to clunk wine-filled skulls tbh

ElfOnTheShelf · 01/01/2012 20:44

I thought it was so we could use all 5 of our senses at the same time.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 01/01/2012 20:48

Too much clinking cuts down on drinking time.

Just say it and dive in.

Tee2072 · 01/01/2012 20:49

HI CHAOS GOOD TO SEE YOU HOW'S YOUR HEAD?

Grin
Bogeyface · 01/01/2012 20:51

Its not nasty at all, but rather difficult at large gatherings, where one should merely touch glasses with ones immediate neighbours. And of course this should only be done with good quality crystal to ensure a nice "ting", there is nothing that shows up a hostess more than the "thunk" of cheap glasses.

Here endeth the lesson.

ChunkyPickle · 01/01/2012 20:53

Depends how many at the table - raising only is better than having to stand.

However, it's touch, not clink.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 01/01/2012 20:56

Hoi, Tee, keep it down.

Grin
Sacagawea · 01/01/2012 20:57

Barbarian...not barbarian. Cliches. If there is something you don't like it doesn't mean it's barbarian.

Tee2072 · 01/01/2012 20:57

SORRY CHAOS DID YOU SAY SOMETHING?

Grin
Scoundrel · 01/01/2012 20:58

You're supposed to clink hard enough that a bit of your drink slops into the other person's drink and vice versa. It's to prove that you've not put poison in their drink.

Tricky if you're drinking chablis and your partner is drinking scotch.

Chubfuddler · 01/01/2012 20:58

My mother won't clink because if you do a sailor dies. Is that completely insane? I think so.

TalcAndTurnips · 01/01/2012 21:04

Good to see you in your natural plumage, Chaos

Have a Hair of the Dog Wine

Hassled · 01/01/2012 21:05

:o - yes, that's completely insane. Are you sure she said a sailor? Nothing about semen?

Chubfuddler · 01/01/2012 21:06

Nope, sailor. Her mother said the same thing.

Tee2072 · 01/01/2012 21:06

Totally bonkers, actually. Beyond insane.

And Grin Hassled.

Bogeyface · 01/01/2012 21:09

Scoundrel, sadly that is a myth, and as you say, terribly bad form if there are mixed drinks on offer!

SmethwickBelle · 01/01/2012 21:10

I think there is a natural limit to it - small gatherings and a big occasion - clinkety clink all round and no drama - when I've been at a table with say 8 or more then there is just raising of glasses or clinking with those immediately in reaching distance, no one climbs over the bread baskets or runs laps around the tables to clink the other end, do they?

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 01/01/2012 21:37

n people at gathering produce n(n-1)/2 clinks. Quickly unmanageable and potentially messy.

YonderRevoltingPeasantWhoIsHe · 01/01/2012 21:47

No, no, Chub, if you say you don't believe in sailors one dies.

Personally I think it's worse to make other people feel awkward about what they're doing, so if others are clinking, I do. This also applies at swinging parties....

TalcAndTurnips · 01/01/2012 21:52

Yonder - if my DH goes poof on the end of the sofa, I shall know who to blame Xmas Shock

Trills · 01/01/2012 21:56

Proper barbarians would be drinking out of horns, not wine glasses.

YABU because you have not asked an AIBU question.
