to wish that shops didn't sell fireworks at new year?

Every new year my neighbours across the road set off loads of fireworks, seems to go on for ages. It's annoying as both my bedroom and 1yo DD's look out onto their garden. I am a bit of a miserable cow around new year, don't really bother with it and am more likely than not to be in bed before the bells after running round after a toddler all day, so AIBU to think that fireworks should be for fireworks night only and it is antisocial to set them off in a residential area at midnight?

YABU, it's one night of the year Hmm

GypsyMoth · 31/12/2011 17:41

Yabu!!

Why should everyone else miss out? Why?

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 17:42

YANBU. My cat agrees. Fireworks are for bonfire night, not because it happens to be NYE. It's really antisocial. Angry

WorraLiberty · 31/12/2011 17:42

YABU

People see the New Year in with parties, fireworks and other celebrations right across the world.

It's the one night of the year when I think people should realise that and put up with it I'm afraid.

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 17:43

When did the fireworks thing on NYE start? Confused

WorraLiberty · 31/12/2011 17:44

About 10 years ago I think?

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 17:46

Yes the Millenium has a lot to answer for. In fact the year 2000 fireworks were probably justified.

GypsyMoth · 31/12/2011 17:47

They were happening well before the millennium!

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 31/12/2011 17:49

YANBU. It is antisocial.

It doesn't show any consideration for others in the vicinity.

Fireworks should only be available to those with certificates proving they have been trained to use them safely and in sensible locations.

It is not one night a year. Every time they appear in the shops horror stories follow. It goes on for weeks either side of the event. Many animals are tortured or killed. There is just no need for it.

GypsyMoth · 31/12/2011 17:50

They are used loads at Diwali too..

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 17:52

Our neighbours have ones that are like bombs going off. My nine year old was terrified and he's a brave kid. Sad

bubbub · 31/12/2011 17:55

yanbu. at all.
some people may love to look at fireworks at midnight. but my 3yr old and 4 year old dont, who wake up crying because of the noise. i dont give a shiny shit if its just one night. its still antisocial. same as blaring music till the early hours. just because my neighbours like to party to loud music, means my whole family have to listen to it till 2am, and the kids cant sleep?
but its their right? what about our right to peace in our own home? its my right on new years day at 7am maybe 6am to do some diy. for 3 hours on the wall. with a hammer, on the deviding wall. in the bedroom... grin. whats that, dickhead neighbours? you need some sleep? awww so did we.
you want fireworks? go to a display, the ones you can buy are shitter than shit anyway.
rant over.

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 17:58

High five bubbub. Couldn't have put it better myself. Smile

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 31/12/2011 18:00

Yay! bubbub that about sums it up! Xmas Grin

alistron1 · 31/12/2011 18:02

I remember millennium eve and the fireworks. I had two 2 year olds and a 5 month old baby. I'd also worked that evening. I LOVED the fireworks that night. They went on for about an hour.

Every year since we have always stood out the front and watched them, we'd have our own tonight if our entire garden wasn't taken up with vegetables/chickens!!

gottagetanewcalender · 31/12/2011 18:04

My neighbours can tart their DIY at 6, we won't hear you above the karaoke.

The idea of fireworks at New Year, came from the chinese, so a bit longer than 10 years ago. I don't use fireworks because of my pets, but it shouldn't stop others from doing so.

I will agree that depending on were you live, you should buy the quieter ones. But part of Western culture is "seeing the New Year in", as do most other cultures, so YABU.

A few of you sound like the type who moves close to a church and then complains about the bell ringing.

bubbub · 31/12/2011 18:07

a few of you sound like the type who buys shitter than shit fireworks and subjects their neighbours to them

alistron1 · 31/12/2011 18:11

A few of you sound like bah humbugs Grin

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 31/12/2011 18:12

I live in a quiet rural area with 8 pets - we chose a quiet rural area for a reason. There are organised fireworks tonight so no one is being denied anything. Those who enjoy them can go where the fireworks are. Those who don't can stay where they aren't. That way everyone gets what they want. It seems selfish to me to set them off in your back garden.

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 18:13

I don't mind bell ringing. But I don't want window rattling fireworks at midnight ta.

alistron1 · 31/12/2011 18:15

I almost wish that I was having some fireworks now, still I shall vicariously enjoy all the selfish people who are pissing off the fun police on new years eve Grin

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 18:16

Think of my poor cat alistron. Sad

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 31/12/2011 18:17

Imagine that. People having parties on NYE. Bastards!

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 18:18

Parties-fine. Bomb-like fireworks-not fine. Just to clarify. Oh and drunk people lighting fireworks-definitely not fine.

gottagetanewcalender · 31/12/2011 18:18

No i am a live and let live type of person. I have respect for people's right to celebrate special events and have traditions.

My need to sleep (and i have worked nights) doesn't trump everything else, when it is only once in a while.
