to wish that shops didn't sell fireworks at new year?

Every new year my neighbours across the road set off loads of fireworks, seems to go on for ages. It's annoying as both my bedroom and 1yo DD's look out onto their garden. I am a bit of a miserable cow around new year, don't really bother with it and am more likely than not to be in bed before the bells after running round after a toddler all day, so AIBU to think that fireworks should be for fireworks night only and it is antisocial to set them off in a residential area at midnight?

I have no problem with parties. I love a party. It is the fireworks I find upsetting.

alistron1 · 31/12/2011 18:29

Someone ALWAYS has to throw in a 'think of the cats' argument, and then I bloody have to capitulate

BAN THEM, BAN ALL FIREWORKS!!!

HeidiKat · 31/12/2011 18:30

Thing is though, if it was just my sleep being disturbed I could suck it up and have an early night tomorrow night, but try explaining it to a toddler who will then take ages to settle and will be exhausted and grumpy. I just don't get why people can't either go to an official display or go to a park somewhere away from houses to set them off instead of waking the whole street, no consideration for those with young children or the elderly who aren't up partying.

Some miserable sods on this thread

People enjoying themselves on NYE? how very dare they

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 18:33

But my cat tries to get under the settee and it's only half an inch off the floor. Sad Even if you keep them in they can still hear them.

usualsuspect · 31/12/2011 18:34

Buy him some ear plugs

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 18:36

Do they sell moggie ear plugs? Grin

whomovedmychocolate · 31/12/2011 18:38

We've had them every sodding weekend since October the first (well our neighbours have) and it's crap. Serves us right I suppose for living near very wealthy party people but grrrr. My cat shoots in at 100 MPH and sometimes shits in the corner in fear. Grrrr.

usualsuspect · 31/12/2011 18:39

cat ear muffs

hippoCritt · 31/12/2011 18:40

My kitten and house rabbit have been properly brought up and are not scared of 'other peoples fireworks'

(actually kitten did spend bonfire night hiding upstairs, poor thing, and I did shake an imaginary fist at neighbours!!!)

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 31/12/2011 18:42

I don't understand how, "It's fun" is a good argument for torturing animals and frightening small children. There are very few other cases where that would be an acceptable argument for causing so much distress. It is very easy to have a fantastic time without upsetting anyone else Xmas Grin

alistron1 · 31/12/2011 18:44

"I don't understand how, "It's fun" is a good argument for torturing animals and frightening small children"

LOL! (not loling at you or disagreeing, just that sentence is amusing Grin )

startail · 31/12/2011 18:45

YABU
I love fire works, small people can survive been woken up one night of the year and the traffic returning from party's may do that anyway.
I have to put up with dogs frightening DD1 and DH and cats shitting in my flower beds the rest of the year. Stupid things don't even get rid off the moles or the mice and eat my bird food.

catgirl1976 · 31/12/2011 18:46

How DARE people celebrate New Years Eve. Tsk. They'll be playing music and laughing next. Bastards.

3wisemenandacameltoeinlycra · 31/12/2011 18:47

Already 1.5 hours of fireworks only another 5 and bit, not that I'm counting

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 18:49

usual that has freaked me out. That is sparkling cat. Shock She is exactly the same as that one. Minus the ear muffs. Shock

cakeismysaviour · 31/12/2011 18:51

I am not a fan of fireworks in general and I believe that they should not be sold to the general public at all.

pictish · 31/12/2011 18:58

Yanbu - anyone who is thinking of enjoying themselves by having fireworks on NYE should just stop it right now, because you have a toddler, and that's more important than anything anyone else might want to do. I mean ffs - who knows what might happen! He could be woken up temporarily, for example!! Shock

The dirty bastards!

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2011 19:00

Exactly pictish. But cats are more important than toddlers IMO.

pictish · 31/12/2011 19:01

They'll be playing music and laughing next. Bastards.

Quite! The inconsiderate shits!! Angry

catgirl1976 · 31/12/2011 19:03

There could even be singing and merry making. These types have no consideration AT ALL.

HeidiKat · 31/12/2011 19:06

Playing music and laughing is fine, an hour plus of loud bangs at gone midnight IMO is not on in the middle of a heavily populated area, there is a park with playing fields 5 minutes walk from where I am and if people would go there to set off their fireworks instead of doing it a few feet away from other people's windows then the disturbance would be kept to a minimum. And yes I know that having a toddler doesn't trump everything else but my next door neighbours are elderly and one is also disabled so I can't imagine they are too chuffed either.

Singing, merry making, laughing and dancing all fine by me. Grin

It's only the fireworks that are completely unnecessary. Wink
