to think that people who don't put any weight on during the Christmas period are not normal?

I have put on about 3Kg and I feel miserable. Come the New Year and I'll start a diet, like I do every new year. Pathetic I know, but normal, right??

You don't have to eat around the clock, though.

I am in my fourties and hitting the menopause, i find even eating within 'normal' amounts but not exercising daily, puts weight on.

Ok, drinking Baileys and eating pringles hasn't helped over Christams. But i get little enough time off work and enjoy doing a cooked breakfast for myself and DD's, on top of which we have sat around and watched films, more than usual.

If it is only for a short time span, then no harm done and the benefits of relaxing and having happy family time together out weight the 'risk' of putting on weight (not that there is a risk unless obese for a long priod of time or constantly yo-you dieting).

gamerwidow · 31/12/2011 12:00

It's very easy to put that weight on. It only takes a mince pie here and a handful of chocolates there over a few weeks to make a difference.

Foxinsocks · 31/12/2011 12:03

Yes that's what I do. Vast amounts of entertaining and Christmas/new year parties. I work ft and dh works over the whole of Xmas/new year so I use it as time to catch up with everyone and cook breakfasts for me and kids (I'm not normally around in the morning) and people round for dinner etc.

I love this time tbh, mainly for seeing the dcs!

I admit it is piggy Grin Blush

Haziedoll · 31/12/2011 12:25

Cybbo - you don't have to eat around the clock to put that weight on as I said in my previous post I ate 2100 calories a day - that is a lot for me but some people eat that normally.

The extra calories for me came from alcohol i had at least half a bottle of wine a day. Thats an extra 300 calories.

6 quality street a day another 300 calories.

Christmas eve I had a glass of mulled wine and mince pie which was a staggering 650 calories!

strictlovingmum · 31/12/2011 12:27

I haven't eaten as much, I didn't put any weight, since November I lost just under a stone, tonight I am wearing my old LBD size 12 and I am chuffedGrin
Saying that, I cooked the Christmas dinner, hence didn't eat lot of it, I am not big on sweets and I don't comfort eat in fact this Christmas I successfully avoided lot of bad foods, unlike previous festive seasons when I used to pile on at least a stone in couple of weeksBlush

1 large Christmas meal is not enough to put on much more than a pound. Is it alcohol that everyone is drinking that adds so much more?

Haziedoll · 31/12/2011 12:33

Yes alcohol and treats. As I said I allowed myself 6 quality street a day but 6 quality street is 300 calories! If you do that every day you will put on weight, especially if you were quite strict about what you ate before Christmas.

TiggyD · 31/12/2011 12:33

I usually put on half a stone during the 2 week christmas period. I let myself do it as a treat and I'm perfectly happy with it. This year I started running again just before and I've only put on 2 pound, so I view it as having lost 5 pound!

MilitaryWag · 31/12/2011 12:39

I have gained 7 pounds.... terrible. I am the human equivalent of a whole pack of piranha when it comes to food. All my clothes are too tight and I can actually feel my stomach beginning to rest on the tops of my lesg when I sit down.... yuck! Start the diet today just to add to my misery

WorraLiberty · 31/12/2011 12:44

I've lose weight every Christmas because I tend to 'pick' at foods instead of eating proper meals I think.

BlissfulMistletoe · 31/12/2011 12:52

I have lost over the Christmas period, work too hard on my diet.

JenniferEight · 31/12/2011 12:53

I think I'm the same as I was a few week ago, but then I don't eat more than I want to usually. Stop when you've had enough kind of works for a lot of people.

I never understood why people complained about putting on weight over Christmas, because it's not like there's necessarily MORE food or more mealtimes crammed into a day or people are forcing food into you.

Sorry to sound like this, it's not intended to upset anyone but I genuinely just don't get it.

JenniferEight · 31/12/2011 12:56

Actually I've lived on chocolates the last week. It's only when I get thoroughly sick of them and start trying to make myself eat toast or sandwiches or dinner instead that I start to put on weight.

Maybe the 'either or' diet works then Smile Nutritionally entirely unsound but it doesn't make you fat.

Bewilderedmum · 31/12/2011 12:58

Worra - same here!

  • am not a big fan of sweet stuff, but love my cheese. I find it hard to overeat just because it's there, so don't usually put weight on over Christmas.

This Christmas I have put on about 4lb though, cos I've been on a high dose of steroid tablets for a week due to asthma, so I have been eating more. Some of it is fluid retention though, cos I finished them yesterday, and am now weeing for England, and my tummy is going down!

waterlego6064 · 31/12/2011 13:07

I always lose weight at Christmas and when I go on holiday. I'm rather scared of gaining weight so I'm deliberately more careful at Christmas. It doesn't mean I have less fun though. I still eat Christmas dinner, obviously, I just don't do all the incessant and needless snacking that I used to do. I'm a binger. If I eat one Celebration, I'll try and eat all of them so it's easier to avoid altogether.

soandsosmummy · 31/12/2011 13:09

I've LOST half a stone since the start of December and not intentionally either (though its good news really as needed to). Not sure why though as hardly stinted over Christmas Confused.

Haziedoll · 31/12/2011 13:10

I often lose weight on holiday, don't know why.

buggyRunner · 31/12/2011 13:12

Weighed self today and 7 lbs gain here too!! I have been exercising daily too! But I never drink alcohol apart from Xmas same as Chocs, cheese and bread. It will be gone by next Wednesday

WorraLiberty · 31/12/2011 13:12

I lose weight on holiday too but I think that's because I get more exercise and we seem to be busy every minute of the day.

Also, we don't eat whilst walking along in the street...I don't know if that helps but I do see an awful lot of families walking along eating chips/pasties/candy floss etc at the seaside.

I wonder if they actually had to stop what they are doing, go indoors and sit and eat it properly, if they'd even bother. Are they really hungry or do they just grab it on the move because they can?

MrsHankey · 31/12/2011 13:14

Hope not Shock

Don't usually but am much heavier this year anyway (been a bit down the past year & eating more anyway)

New Year hope to return to normal.

Foxinsocks · 31/12/2011 13:16

For me it is alcohol, cheese and sweets/puddings Grin

I also cook a lot more and cook for other people which tends to mean more fattening food. Ie in a normal week I would never eat puddings but over the Christmas week, I'd probably eat puddings virtually every day.

I love going to gym though so for me it's no hassle shifting the weight in Jan

RedHotSanta · 31/12/2011 13:30

I dread to think tbh. Caught a side view of myself in the kitchen window last night and I was looking W.I.D.E. Too scared to weigh - must man up and do so tomorrow!

Have hardly exercised, which is the main problem that and the quality street .It has more or less rained constantly for the last fortnight. I managed to get an hour walk in on the 27th when it stopped raining briefly, but it was a toddler-paced walk.

I am now more or less housebound potty training DS for the next few days, and it is STILL pissing it down.

WorraLiberty · 31/12/2011 13:34

Do you have an umbrella? Grin

RedHotSanta · 31/12/2011 13:41

I don't want to melt! Grin

But seriously, it would have been lovely to have had a break from the torrential rain, to have a few nice Xmas stroll with the DCs. We have been out (to test Xmas presents!) but it has been unpleasant and miserable. Will be going for our NY Day walk tomorrow rain or shine, but it really would be lovely if the sun would come out just once this Xmas it won't.
