To give DS Thai curry

PossetFeatures · 29/12/2011 13:19

I'm making Thai Green Chicken Curry tonight for tea. Was thinking of saving some for nearly-11 month old DS for lunch/tea tomorrow. It won't be overly spicy (DP is a wimp), maybe a little bit of a kick. Will serve with lots of rice. DS generally eats anything and everything and is a gannet. Have just been on phone to friend with similar aged baby, and mentioned what I was cooking tonight, and that I planned to give some to DS and she nearly had a fit that I would give curry to a baby. I'm now wondering if i'm being too laissez faire about it!

FWIW I've tried DS on an Ella's Kitchen thai green curry pouch before and it was one of the few things he's ever refused- can't say I blame him, didn't smell (or taste) like any thai curry i've had before! Thought i'd try him on some proper stuff.

AIBU?

You know you're own baby

If he eats it he eats it...if he doesn't then give him something else Confused

WorraLiberty · 29/12/2011 13:21

Your even

I knew it didn't look right Blush

NinkyNonker · 29/12/2011 13:21

Dd has tried everything we've had as long as it wasn't wildly unsuitable, this sounds fine. If he doesn't like it he'll let you know and can have something else. Fwiw, one of dd's favourites is chilli and rice, she seems to love strong flavours.

Noopypappy · 29/12/2011 13:22

Absolutely no reason not to try it. Annabel Karmel has a Thai green curry for toddlers in one of her books. I would however have an alternative ready if he won't touch it. Grin

GirlWithALlamaTattoo · 29/12/2011 13:22

Try him with it, but have a back-up plan in case he doesn't like it. It's proper, home-made food, made of identifiable ingredients. If he likes it, winner. If not, all the more for you.

cardibach · 29/12/2011 13:23

When DD was a baby I asked the owner of our local Indian what age his children were when they started eating curry. He looked at me like this > Confused Hmm and said 'When they start eating.' He said they mix some yoghurt in if there is too much kick. It'll be fine.

snowwombat · 29/12/2011 13:24

YANBU. you could always add a bit of natural yoghurt for DS if you are worried about the heat.
Thai green curry a big favourite of DS from a similar age.

HairyNigel · 29/12/2011 13:26

Don't see why it would be a problem, it's good for kids to try different flavours

RockStockAndTwoOpenBottles · 29/12/2011 13:27

DD3 has been eating Thai green curries since about 9 months and loves them. She's quite happy with medium spicy now and has eaten very spicy when I fucked up on buying the milder chillies Grin

TheProvincialLady · 29/12/2011 13:27

I would imagine that Thai babies consume Thai food without dying.

My boys have endured enjoyed curry, chillis and all sorts of supposedly adult only food from a very young age with no ill effects. I feel that the more tastes you can expose them to - and the less prepared 'children's food' - the more likely they are to enjoy a wide range of food as they get older. I am sure that the way we as a nation assume that children only enjoy bland, sugary, novelty shaped crap is one of the reasons everyone thinks all children are fussy eaters.

Disclaimer: DS2 was a fussy eater to the point that he ate virtually no solid food before 14m so I know it's not just the type of food offered that causes fussiness. But it is a factor in ongoing fusiness.

PossetFeatures · 29/12/2011 13:27

Oh good, thai green curry it is then! I'm fairly confident he'll eat it, she was ranting that spices can damage babies insides etc etc which got me wondering if I was doing the right thing.

Think I will let DP change all his nappies in the 24 hours after though Grin

I imagine 11 month olds in Thailand eat it all the time...

PregolaLolaOnAlittleDonkey · 29/12/2011 13:31

ds eats what we eat, usually taken out before too much seasoning and strong spices go in and as others have said mix in a bit of yogurt and have something else on the menu

squeakytoy · 29/12/2011 13:33

why on earth wouldnt you? my stepkids ate curries, chillies, and lots of spicy food from an early age, and are still alive to tell the tale, with no ill effects.

nailak · 29/12/2011 13:35

Your friend sounds a bit silly Tbh, what does she think asians feed their kids? And what actual ingredient is harmful? Coriander? Cumin?

bedubabe · 29/12/2011 13:37

DS had Thai green curry before 8 months. That was how we discovered he has a skin reaction to aubergine :)

TheProvincialLady · 29/12/2011 13:39

Spices can damage babies insides?! I remember an acquaitance of mine telling me that spices cause kidney damage but I felt then it was a load of utter bolleaux and that past six months, anything except salt and honey goes. You couldn't persuade a baby to eat something that was really hot or spicy to the point that it would damage their insides.

Does your friend have the annabel karmel intensive baby weaning planning schedule? Or is she more of a use an organic jar because if a company makes it it must be safe?

TamIAm · 29/12/2011 13:42

Spices damage tummies? On what planet? I mean...you're not talking about feeding whole chillis to your bub, afterall - just trying him on a bit of curry.

I'd have more of a concern about feeding take-away food to such a youngster, but honestly - each to their own shrug.

MollyTheMole · 29/12/2011 13:43

YANBU DS1 had his first Madras at 10 months as me and DP looked on with tears of pride in our eyes

FreudianSlipper · 29/12/2011 13:44

just add more coconut milk so it is not too hot or spicy

of course young children eat curry from a young age but not hot or very spicy curries

starshaker · 29/12/2011 13:44

My 1 year old twins love spicy food. We have the spicy fajitas and my 6 yearold will only have a cheese wrap but the twins love the chicken and veg with the spice mix. DD1 just doesnt like spicy but the twins love it. Wonder if it has anything to do with my curry addiction while i was pg with them lol

TheProvincialLady · 29/12/2011 13:44

TamIAm the OP is making the curry herself. But the occasional bit of take away curry is not going to cause any problems. Having it often would be a very bad idea of course.

auburnlizzy78 · 29/12/2011 13:46

Saltyair and nailak make an excellent point!!

We sometimes make it and give our 14 month old some either at the time or save it for the next day, and have been doing so for a few months. He rather likes it. Not all babies like bland food. He may surprise you!

PossetFeatures · 29/12/2011 13:51

DS is a great eater- loves strong cheeses, olives, and I mostly feed him what we eat and batch freeze several portions, i've always thought it's important to try lots of different things with him.

Friend is a bit neurotic about her DD, as she suffers from a vomiting issue so does have trouble feeding her, so she does tend to stick to blander foods most of the time.

Obviously don't add salt to what we cook if he's going to have some
