To give DS Thai curry

PossetFeatures · 29/12/2011 13:19

I'm making Thai Green Chicken Curry tonight for tea. Was thinking of saving some for nearly-11 month old DS for lunch/tea tomorrow. It won't be overly spicy (DP is a wimp), maybe a little bit of a kick. Will serve with lots of rice. DS generally eats anything and everything and is a gannet. Have just been on phone to friend with similar aged baby, and mentioned what I was cooking tonight, and that I planned to give some to DS and she nearly had a fit that I would give curry to a baby. I'm now wondering if i'm being too laissez faire about it!

FWIW I've tried DS on an Ella's Kitchen thai green curry pouch before and it was one of the few things he's ever refused- can't say I blame him, didn't smell (or taste) like any thai curry i've had before! Thought i'd try him on some proper stuff.

YANBU DS1 had his first Madras at 10 months as me and DP looked on with tears of pride in our eyes

Is that all? DD3 was on Phal by then AND washing it down with pints of Stella. Then she went out to fight.

olibeansmummy · 29/12/2011 13:58

Of course he can have it. Curry has always been ds's favourite food! He wouldn't baby curry either!

I am immensely proud of her.

Your eyes fill up with pride when your DC's first words are:

"Chicken Jalfrezi, half chips, half rice, 20 poppadoms and a large Cobra!"

Then you know he is truly on the path of global citizenship!

mine ate curry from waaaay under a year old... one of their favourites and still is

TamIAm · 29/12/2011 14:10

Ah, missed that bit TheProvincialLady - thanks. Then I'd have no problem at all with that, personally.

Avenged · 29/12/2011 15:04

I was asking the guy who runs the local kebab about giving my kids curries and he told me to start with something mild like a Rogan Josh or any kind of coconut based curries. He also told me to use green chillies in curries rather than red ones as the green shillies are a lot less likely to irritate the stomach and any ulcers a person may have. He said that red chillies are notorious for contributing to major ulcer irritation.

NorksAkimbo · 29/12/2011 15:09

My kids love curries as well...they are 5 and 4 and I learned to make my own when they were babies so we could all enjoy without all the extra salt and stuff. I never assumed that they would dislike any food and just let them try everything we ate from babyhood. Neither of them will touch anything remotely spicy, which is fine...I make theirs (and DHs )and tart mine up with the hot stuff!

RidingInTheMidnightBlue · 29/12/2011 15:20

Dd is 10mo and prefers strong flavours. She also didn't like the ella's kitchen Thai curry one.

bruffin · 29/12/2011 16:28

My DS was eating curries from younger than that. Babies should be eating what the family is eating at that age anyway. My MIL admitted to me that she thought I was mad feeding ds curry etc but then she saw how unfussy he was and would eat anything then she realised that i go it right.

Insomnia11 · 29/12/2011 16:41

Mine like curry but have never progressed to anything stronger than a korma yet. Mind you, I didn't have the opportunity to try it until I was 14 so they do eat a wider variety of food than I did.

Heleninahandcart · 29/12/2011 17:52

Mine ate curry from around the same age. 17 years later its one of his favourites.

Oblomov · 29/12/2011 18:08

My 2 loved curry at a similar early age. And now 7 and 3, eat all curry's they can get their hands on. Go for it.

Oblomov · 29/12/2011 18:10

Damage babies insides? Hmm oh purlease. is your friend normally so silly?

FlangelinaBallerina · 29/12/2011 19:01

A dinky bit of mild curry and rice surely couldn't be a problem, especially home made and presumably with veggies in it too. Nice and nutritious. My only concern would be that his next nappy might be a sight to behold. My DB always used to nick food from my dad's plate, from being about 11 months onwards, and my dad likes spicy curry and chilli. DB became very partial to the hot stuff, even as a toddler. He didn't seem to suffer any harm because of it, and still loves spicy food now- whole family do. But some of the smells and substances that came out of him afterwards were absolutely unholy. Although I guess Mexican, Thai and Indian babies can't all poo like that after spicy food, or the whole planet would have been suffocated by now.

RockStock, you are an inspiration.

SearchSquad · 29/12/2011 19:19

My DS has had some variation of curry almost every other day since he was 10 months old. He is really fond of it and is a bit fussy when eating bland food, which is why I make it so often.

Curry is, IMHO a very healthy option if you are making it yourself (i.e. without any additives, too much oil and chilli powder). The spices - cardamom, corriander seeds, cumin, fennel seeds, tumeric etc - have proven health benefits.

Even chillies, when consumed in moderation have antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties. And I suppose that is why they are eaten so much in the tropical countries - India, Thailand, Mexico etc.

VikingLady · 29/12/2011 19:58

My mum informs me that my first solid meal was madras. She hadn't planned it, but I showed an interest in her dinner, and she thought it might be a good idea to let me taste a tiny bit. She thought I'd hate it and stop trying to grab, so she could eat in peace, but it ended up with sharing!

Don't worry about it. if your dc doesn't like it, they will spit it out.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 29/12/2011 20:04

Lucky bugger I say - do you fancy making me one with quorn instead of chicken?? Pleeeeeeeeeeeease? But in a few days time - yet to recover from tummy bug! :/

MollyTheMole · 29/12/2011 20:05

rockstock of course he washed it down with a stella, we're not animals fgs Hmm

RockStockAndTwoOpenBottles · 29/12/2011 20:58

Grin Molly and I should bloody well hope he did too.

RockStockAndTwoOpenBottles · 29/12/2011 21:00

Flangelina (top name, top top name) I like to think that I can spread positive child rearing vibes around the place Grin

zest01 · 29/12/2011 21:30

yanbu - what does your friend think Thai babies eat??!! I did blw with ours at 6 months and they went stright on to whatever the family was having with the odd exception. They are all fantastic eaters now and friends always ask "what's your secret" - like you it's no secret, just give them what the family has from day 1. Just brace yourself for the nappy later Wink

skybluepearl · 29/12/2011 21:52

my 10 month old would be happy with that

Seabright · 29/12/2011 21:54

My DD's nursery regularly has chilli, curry, tacos etc on the menu.

I usually have a pot of creme fraische in the fridge and add a bit if I feel it's too spicy.
