Seen posters correcting grammar on here, do they do so in RL situations?

Sitandnatter - the thing is a lot of MNers are writers. Probably because the founders are journalists. In the early days it felt like every other poster was a hack. (I am an editor.) So many of us are professional pedants and it can be hard to switch off!

yellowraincoat · 24/12/2011 20:24

Oh, I don't agree with that edam. I am an English teacher, so also a professional pedant, and I don't feel any need to start picking up on grammar online.

edam · 24/12/2011 22:14

Yellow, as a teacher you probably work harder than me - am a school gov so realise what long hours you do. I am on a monthly mag so apart from press week it's not that intense.

But I don't actually comment on grammar or spelling that often on here. Can't remember the last time. Just reserve the right to do it if it seems like a good idea...

You're "saddened" by people not knowing the difference between "your" and "you're"? Wow.

EmmaBemma · 24/12/2011 23:05

This thread is another opportunity to link to the excellent Stephen Fry podcast about the tragedy of grammar pedants... here:

Spero · 24/12/2011 23:09

I think itis a bit sad. I wouldn't give you a job if you didn't know the difference between 'your' and 'you're'. I would think you were thick and/or badly educated.

A friend of mine does this and she is training to be a primary school teacher. That does make me sad.

yellowraincoat · 24/12/2011 23:12

But in some jobs, you don't need to know the difference, Spero. My dad is a mechanic and he can't spell for shit, but it doesn't really matter.

As a primary school teacher, yes, you should know the difference.

On MN, though, it doesn't matter.

MamaMaiasaura · 24/12/2011 23:15

People's grammatical Ability has no bearing on my personal happiness. Why on earth it should make someone sad is a matter for them and their therapist.

OP posts:
Spero · 24/12/2011 23:17

It matters to me. It makes me wince. It is irritating. if that means I need a therapist, then I am not alone.

yellowraincoat · 24/12/2011 23:20

If your so irritated by someone not using correct grammar, maybe you're new year's resolution should be to chill out a little.

Spero · 24/12/2011 23:24

Sorry. It's hardwired. I may need to be sick now.

yellowraincoat · 24/12/2011 23:26

Merry (sicky) Christmas!

Spero · 24/12/2011 23:27

But you let yourself down by correct usage of the apostrophe there. Try 'years's' and 'grammer'. (I found it emotionally quite hard to do that)

MamaMaiasaura · 24/12/2011 23:27

It winds you up alot then? Wink

OP posts:
yellowraincoat · 24/12/2011 23:30

Oh Mama, you really shouldn't of done that.

Spero · 24/12/2011 23:33

It's like tripping over a big log on the linguistic road. I can't not notice it and I ruminate on it.

But of course if anyone corrects my spelling etc I want to pull their intestines out through their nose.

I am clearly very unwell.

Spero · 24/12/2011 23:34

I am going to need a bigger bag please.

MamaMaiasaura · 24/12/2011 23:44

I could of left well alone, but that would of been unlike me, although I know really I should of.
