Seen posters correcting grammar on here, do they do so in RL situations?

OP posts:
MorrisZapp · 23/12/2011 14:15

'I've been knifed' is perfectly fine. No correction needed that I can see?

deliciousdevilwoman · 23/12/2011 14:16

I agree totally with LyingWitch. And Rudolf. It's sooo fucking superior and pompous.

habbibu · 23/12/2011 14:16

My phone always posts in prose, kayano.

Did you
perchance
mean
verse?

habbibu · 23/12/2011 14:18

And didn't Keats write "should of" or somesuch?

And if writing better English gets you a job, probably also a good haircut and smart clothes helps too. Would you stop random punters on the street and Gok them?

Kayano · 23/12/2011 14:19

Err chill out lying. What the hell?

Corrected them by implication? I just said that it was correct that she was corrected, I didn't actually do it myself. What a load of tosh. Corrected by implication!

I even put a Wink to show that I wasnt really bothered.

I often write haikus
On here so people know that
I'm not serious

Grin

So wound up, sheesh Hmm

Trills · 23/12/2011 14:20

I did point out that I am a cow. :o

habbibu · 23/12/2011 14:21

I always think of haiku as quite serious. Perhaps you should go for limericks?

3inABIRDsnest · 23/12/2011 14:21

There is a difference between a regional accent and good grammar. There are plenty of BBc presenters on radio four with strong regional accents who still use correct grammar. The first is an aspect of national diversity to be celebrated; the second is an issue of a lack of education. Whilst there are obviously situations where an individual might choose to use a register that does not utilise standard Einglish grammar, the point is that if you are unable to use it, you will face potential discrimination. I think this is because the education system has failed you - to be truly literate in our society, you need to be able to choose and use the appropriate register for the social situation you are in.

I guess a bone of contention would be which linguistic register is appropriate for a forum like mumsnet!

Kayano · 23/12/2011 14:21

I apologise I fucked up that haiku Confused

But hey... I don't really give a shit

Correct me! :D

habbibu · 23/12/2011 14:21

Meh, admitting to be a cow is no defence.

habbibu · 23/12/2011 14:22

There are several standard Englishes, though...

Yeah, but not everyone would feel uncomfortable at being corrected. Some of us welcome it.

"if someone knocked on your front door covered in blood stating "i've bin knifed", would you correct them?"

Firstly, 'the grammar police' are perfectly able to distinguish between posts dealing with emotional distress, and posts which are just chat.

Secondly, the above extreme example is correct grammar anyway [good use of the present perfect]; no need to correct regional pronunciation.

Kayano · 23/12/2011 14:23

Divvent have a go man!

Am gannin Hyem Hmm

ShowOfHands · 23/12/2011 14:24

If you don't mind about poor grammar then you should extend this not minding to other people minding and then you wouldn't mind the corrections.

So those people that like to learn accept the correction, those that don't ignore it and then we can all get on with the mince pie eating.

celticlassie · 23/12/2011 14:24

If I was using incorrect grammar or punctuation, I would want it pointed out to me, to save me from making the same mistakes again. Typos happen to everyone, and colloquialism is perfectly acceptable, but I'd want my mistakes corrected.

Another teacher though. Xmas Grin

ShengdanRoad · 23/12/2011 14:25

I do it for a living. I'm an editor and proofreader.

ThisIsAnExtremelyVeryGoodXmas · 23/12/2011 14:25

I don't generally online OR real life unless I want to be narky, but I made an exception for a work colleague who very nearly had a grammatically incorrect tattoo (wrong form of your/you're) or for pretty major things like "will you learn me how to do xxx" which I can't stand Blush

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/12/2011 14:26

No, I won't chill out. You said something like, "It's always correct to correct". Would you have done that regardless of the thread?

I'm sick of seeing other posters being 'corrected' by self-satisfied, smug morons who need 'back up' from their little cronies. Littering a thread with 'corrections' that nobody has asked for, it reminds me of tom-cats spraying.

If you (not personally you, kayano) think it's acceptable to make comments about the way other people post - not the content, just the way it is written - then that says an awful lot. All you're doing is stilting conversation and making some posters feel as if they don't 'belong' unless they can meet your exacting standards.

It's nothing amusing, just more than a little pathetic really.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/12/2011 14:27

Or go on your own board Show of Hands and drone on there, perhaps? How do you know if people 'want' to be corrected - do you ask first? Ridiculous.

habbibu · 23/12/2011 14:28

But that's when people have paid you to do it, Shengdan, which is a bit different. Bit of a busman's holiday to do it on here, surely?

Perhaps MN could introduce a bit on the profile where people can say "yes, please, correct my grammar" or "leave me alone and take your Lynn Truss/John Honey guff with you".

WinterWonderlandIsComing · 23/12/2011 14:28

The only thing I do in RL is correct DD:

"We was all..."

"We were all..."

Trouble is, my entire family use it as do all her school friends and probably the teachers too given her crappy school

BelfastRingingOutForXmasBloke · 23/12/2011 14:30

Why is it superior and pompous? Only if you take it as such. Offence is taken, not necessarily given.

Another pedant corrects me, I don't feel inferior to them. I feel interested, intrigued.

Kayano · 23/12/2011 14:30

Ok. I'm no ones cronie and you are a bit OTT about this all. On anyone who disagrees with you (or is just not as bloody bothered) is 'a bit pathetic'

Ok then

One thing to correct some grammar, another to actually insult people Hmm
I don't actually correct people on here actually but I did notice the thread title in question and KNEW someone else would correct it which was why I put my comment with a Wink

So wind your neck in a bit
