AIBU to think that Fairytale of New York is the most perfect Christmas song?

Not sappy, twee or sentimental and highly singable. I love it!

I like the one from the James Bond film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'... "Do you know how Chistmas trees are grown"... Grin

I'll concede that there a few good lyrics in it.
But the tune and the singing are shite.

Marmite song, I think.

Snapespeare · 22/12/2011 13:22

'white wine in the sun' is the best christmas song ever. (but 'fairytale of new york' is a close 2nd...) i like

coraltoes · 22/12/2011 13:25

It is fooking FANTASTIC!!!!

AriesWithBellsOn · 22/12/2011 13:50

It is NOT a Marmite song! Everyone I know likes it and I didn't imagine there was anyone who didn't.

Until I read this thread, that is Grin

As for the tune and the singing being shit, well yes Shane sounds pissed. But that's part of his charm. But Kirsty was one of our finest singers in her own way, before she met her sad end. The tune and the instrumentation are perfect - the solo piano starting, bringing in the singers and the rest of the band joining in. It's a beautiful, bittersweet song.

OMG-the Florence & Billy Bragg-that is seriously awful.

I´m cringing for them.

HaveYourselfAMardyLittleXmas · 22/12/2011 14:10

Well it is a marmite song - read the thread!

"well yes Shane sounds pissed. But that's part of his charm."

No it's not charming. It just sounds like very bad, off-key, pissed singing.

I agree Kirsty was a very fine singer - much much better than Shane. And of course, it's a tragedy she is no longer with us. But he just ruins the whole song. (I loved Her Tropical Rainstorm album btw).

And the tune is a dirge particularly at the beginning. And then it gets all Irish jiggy. And I don't like Irish jiggy.

So - ner.

IdRatherBeInDrinkingMulledWine · 22/12/2011 14:13

oh yeah i love it and so does my DS2 hes always saying 'put it on again mummy' and then singing along.

HaveYourselfAMardyLittleXmas · 22/12/2011 14:44

No offence to any Irish jiggy people btw. Just doesn't do it for me.

jellybeans · 22/12/2011 15:45

I Love it, YANBU. The Pogues are a great band too.

AriesWithBellsOn · 22/12/2011 18:41

Ner to you Mardy. I don't think we're going to agree on this. You're utterly wrong, of course.

Happy Christmas :)

LordOfTheFlies · 22/12/2011 18:57

Aries

Happy Christmas your ass -get it right Xmas Wink

(Though it sounds like yer arse to me) Xmas Blush

AriesWithBellsOn · 22/12/2011 19:07

I thank God it's our last.

I'm in a terrible mood. Christmas does this to me. Is it the thought of being surrounded by in laws asking me when we're going to "start a family" and SILs dandling their cherubic offspring? Quite probably.

Oh well, at least I'm not an old slut on junk.

HaveYourselfAMardyLittleXmas · 22/12/2011 19:51

I have been know to admit I'm wrong on AIBU, believe it or not........

... but not in this case. So ner back.

But even if you are a little misguided, do have a lovely Christmas and mentally blank out those ILs! Xmas Smile

KeepInMindItsAlmostChristmas · 22/12/2011 19:55

love love LOVE LOVE it

brass · 22/12/2011 20:04

LadyBeagle those lines

you took my dreams from me when I first found you
I kept them with me babe, I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I built my dreams around you

make me cry EVERY time I hear them wherever I am whatever I am doing!

VickityBoo · 22/12/2011 20:05

Love it!

Laugs · 22/12/2011 21:08

brass, yes - best lines of a song ever. (As well as 'I could have been someone' 'well so could anyone'. I often have the same conversation with myself!)

Laugs · 22/12/2011 21:10

And I think it's 'I pray God it's our last'. I will be really upset if they are both dying, I thought it was just an argument Sad

peggyblackett · 22/12/2011 21:17

I love it. It's only narrowly bettered by George and Andrew belting out Last Christmas :o.

Laugs · 22/12/2011 21:21

interesting article for fellow FTNY geeks

LadyBeagleBaublesAndBells · 22/12/2011 21:26

Thanks for that, Laugs.

ElectricSoftParade · 22/12/2011 21:41

YANBU but does anyone else love Christmas Dream by Perry Como? Fairytale and that one have to be my favourites.

LordOfTheFlies · 22/12/2011 23:21

FTONY is my favourite, but I did find myself singing along to Cliff Richards "Saviours Day" in Sainsburys. Aaaaaaaarrrrrrgggghhh.

BTW have you heard the Shane Mc and The Priests version of 'Little Drummer Boy'?
'Tis very nice.
