AIBU to think that Fairytale of New York is the most perfect Christmas song?

Not sappy, twee or sentimental and highly singable. I love it!

Ha! X-posts. Same horrible picture though!

JosieRosie · 22/12/2011 10:15

Kirsty is fab, but the song makes me want to stick pins in my eyes. Disagree with people who say it's not sentimental - I think it's extremely sentimental in its own way and has become so cliched through so many listens. Bag o' shite.

Only Xmas song I like is the Pretenders one - don't know the name but it goes 'he's go-o-o-o-ne, two thousand mi-i-i-i-les.......it must be Christmas time'

diddl · 22/12/2011 10:15

Looks like he´s breaking them in for Red Rum!

BamBam21 · 22/12/2011 10:19

I like it, but (bad taste alert!) my most favourite Christmas song is the Shakin' Stevens one.Xmas Blush It came out when I was about 8, and it always reminds me of happy childhood Christmasses and brings a smile to my face. Luckily my DS(8) loves it too, but gets confused and calls Shakey "Dancing Steven"!Xmas Grin

JosieRosie · 22/12/2011 10:24

'Dancing Steven' - that's the cutest thing I heard since my colleague told me that her 14 month old says 'oh-oh-oh' everytime she sees Father Xmas Grin

Xmas Grin
MumPotNoodle · 22/12/2011 10:34

Great song. Maverick Sabre did this in the live lounge couple of weeks back, it was incredible...check it out on youtube.

Bloodymary · 22/12/2011 10:41

I absolutly love it, best Christmas song ever.

Tho I often cry at the end of it as my DD is on junk (heroin). Xmas Sad

JosieRosie · 22/12/2011 10:45

I'm sorry Bloodymary - I hope she gets off it very soon Sad

Bloodymary · 22/12/2011 10:52

Thanks Josie.

mayorquimby · 22/12/2011 10:59

"He calls her 'you old slag on junk', junk meaning drugs. I read the background story to it once and he is singing it from his hospital bed and thinking back about his life and her.

'Merry Christmas you arsehole, thank god it's our last' - he is dying."

Singing from the drunk tank surely? and is the lyric "I pray god it's our last"?
getting worried now that I've been singing this song wrong for years.
Also yanbu op, it's by the pogues who are beyond criticism so it's a brilliant song.

SantasCave · 22/12/2011 11:05

Just wanted to second the Maverick Sabre version. It is on YouTube.

I'm not a massive fan of the song, but this version made my skin tingle.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 22/12/2011 11:06

'You're an old slut on junk', not slag.
And yes, it's 'Merry Christmas your arse, I pray God it's our last.'

I love it. But Last Christmas is a thing of beauty too, in a very different way. Grin
Other fab Christmas/winter songs: 'Santa Baby', Bruce Springsteen doing 'Santa Claus Is Coming to Town' and 'Baby It's Cold Outside'.

SantasCave · 22/12/2011 11:14

Don't forget Dominick The Donkey Wink

Jiggidy jig. Eeyore, eeyore!

LordOfTheFlies · 22/12/2011 11:24

Imperial

Elvis Costello.
Olivers Army

Pfffttt.

I'm inwardly seething thinking about Mr Costello because he said that all Queen fans could disappear into a pit and no-one would miss them.
I'm a Queen fan BTW

LordOfTheFlies · 22/12/2011 11:28

When my DS doesn't brush his teeth properly, I shout
"DS- 2 words- Shane Mc Gowan"

That gets him back to the toothbrush. (Evil emotional blackmail mum emoticon)

RainboweBrite · 22/12/2011 11:34

Of course not! Anybody who doesn't love this song is BU.

HaveYourselfAMardyLittleXmas · 22/12/2011 11:46

"Anybody who doesn't love this song is BU"

That'll be me then!

JosieRosie · 22/12/2011 11:48

And me! Grin

AriesWithBellsOn · 22/12/2011 11:49

It's a beautiful song.

Anyone who doesn't think so is Wrong.

HaveYourselfAMardyLittleXmas · 22/12/2011 11:56

Oh no I'm not!

LadyBeagleBaublesAndBells · 22/12/2011 12:42

I also love this song so much.
The lines at the end 'You took my dreams away' and 'All my dreams were around you' make me sad.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 22/12/2011 12:44

It's horrid... I hate it with a passion. Hmm

whethergirl · 22/12/2011 12:58

One of my fave lines is "I could have been someone" and she sings back "Well so could anyone"

love it
