Not sappy, twee or sentimental and highly singable. I love it!

I really like fairy tale of new york

but Greg Lake's I believe in father christmas beats it hands down

Clawdy · 21/12/2011 21:04

You are right, edam. I love watching the video, too. The end bit where they dance in one another's arms always moves me. In its own strange way,it's a true love song.

katkitya · 21/12/2011 21:06

I love it. Its a toss between that and Last Christmas for me.

Bibbo · 21/12/2011 21:07

Love it love it love it! In fact, ALL OTHER Christmas songs are shit!

MixedClassBaby · 21/12/2011 21:08

YANBU. The only christmas song I can handle.

tardisjumper · 21/12/2011 21:11

I love it. It reminds me of my grandparents. My grandfather was the son of irish immigrants, and so was my grandma, though she didn't know until later in life as she was adopted. He was an alocholic and she a very well educated laaady and they eventually had a bitter divorce.

However, they got together and were nice to each other for xmas for myself and cousins (grandchildren).

Bittersweet really.

Marlinspike · 21/12/2011 21:11

LOVE it...Merry Christmas your arse sums it all up!!

Great for singing along to in the car!

CroissantNeuf · 21/12/2011 21:12

I quite like it but I think my favourite is Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses

MynameisnotEarl · 21/12/2011 21:16

Imo it's The Best Christmas song Ever.

DeePanCrisPandEeeven · 21/12/2011 21:31

YABVVVU.

The best Christmas song is Wizard's "I wish it could be Christmas everyday".

HeidiKat · 21/12/2011 21:32

YANBU, brilliant song.

eurochick · 21/12/2011 21:36

It's the only non-twee Christmas song. Therefore, it is the only acceptable Christmas song.

DeePanCrisPandEeeven · 21/12/2011 21:39

"non-twee"?? But, but, but..Christmas is defined by twee-ness!! eurochick - YABU!!

Tanith · 21/12/2011 21:45

I love Greg Lake's song, too, chipmunksex. I only found out recently that it was by him, though.

Love Fairytale in New York; loathe with a passion Last Christmas!

muminthecity · 21/12/2011 21:46

YANBU, best Christmas song ever by far! The highlight of my Christmas every year was going to see The Pogues at the Brixton Academy a couple of days before Christmas with my entire family. Sadly not able to anymore Sad

moragbellingham · 21/12/2011 21:48

My fave... for the memories of boyfriends past.

My DC like Boney M, happily they can be found on the same CD.

TeamDamon · 21/12/2011 21:49

Best Christmas song ever. Without a doubt.

A1980 · 22/12/2011 00:11

It is pure shite.

I love version of it though. Pure gold!

This is a youtube link. Don't play it in front of children!

JollyJinglyJoo · 22/12/2011 00:16

YANBU- I love it too. I think it is a lot more representative of the emotions of Christmas than many other christmas songs: young couple meet, all lovey-dovey, too much drink, end up fighting, drunken make-up at the end.

But then, my other favoutite Christmas song is "The Happiest Christmas Tree" (I love the "tiny little bells that jingle, and tiny little lights that tingle") so I am obviously sad and naff Xmas Grin

whethergirl · 22/12/2011 00:21

I love it and I'm a big Kirsty Maccoll fan, it's a great tribute to her, she was so talented and she died in a horrible diving accident - in front of her kids - makes me so sad but so happy that her legend lives on.

WorraLiberty · 22/12/2011 00:23

I love it too! Xmas Grin

supermama212 · 22/12/2011 08:14

love it op its amazing kirsty mcoll had a great voice, a tragic loss

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 22/12/2011 08:23

I love it but love the Pogues and Kirsty anyway. Was also at Brixton every year until they stopped :(

I despise Wham too.

LordOfTheFlies · 22/12/2011 08:30

LoveLoveLove FTONY but only The Pogues version. The Ronan Keating one makes me stabby Xmas Shock

This was playing when I was giving birth to my PFB (DS) just before the Millenium Christmas.(Because I was lying on a bed with a drip in my arm, but not half dead-though I felt it)

I don't drink so Gas & Air was a flippin revelation to me Xmas Blush.

I just hear the opening notes and it gets me there .

But I loved this song before, it's a sort of anti-everything-Christmas IYKWIM.

magicrat · 22/12/2011 08:42

YANBU. Only decent Xmas song I can think of and I too am missing the Pogues Brixton Academy gigs, doesn't feel like Xmas for me without it.
