AIBU to hate wrapping presents?

I lose the sellotape, the paper tears, the scissors are crap, my back ends up aching with perching on the edge of the settee, the dogs just plays with the paper and I end up chasing him, and I hate, hate, wrapping presents!!

Oh, I would love a wrapping room. Definitely something my fantasy house would feature.

Becaroooodolf · 21/12/2011 15:27

Hate it.

I mostly use gift bags - I have some that have been going for 4 xmas's now!

Only use cheap paper too...just gets torn off and stuffed in a bin bag on xmas morning anyway.

My friend puts me to shame...all gifts wrapped beautifully in foil paper with confetti inside (wtf??) and matching ribbons and bows....

midnightexpress · 21/12/2011 15:28

Oh, would like to add that yet another reason that Waitrose are brilliant is that they print a grid on the back of all their wrapping paper so you can cut it straight. Genius.

RainboweBrite · 21/12/2011 15:30

HATE it! Can't understand how anyone enjoys it. SO glad I got all mine done (apart from a couple I had to wrap on behalf of DS, aged 9) in one go, on the 7th December.

FreezusOfNazareth · 21/12/2011 15:32

These make wrapping a doddle. Selotape make some too but they're more pricey.

stealthsquiggle · 21/12/2011 15:32

Percy you are probably right - I know I wrap presents the way I do because I love it. However, I also love receiving beautifully wrapped presents, so perhaps those recipients who are like-minded nutters also appreciate mine [hopeful]?

FreezusOfNazareth · 21/12/2011 15:33

midnightexpress yy to lined paper. Brilliant stuff. WHSmith do it too.

PtCatalyst · 21/12/2011 15:36

A wrapping room! That would be wonderful! Everything arranged in rainbow order, with ribbons and paper in matching shades. And different ribbon widths. And lots of different sorts of bows in all the different colours! And different sorts of tape for different sorts of paper (some sellotape and paper combinations are rather incompatible...) I'm overthinking this, aren't I?

stealthsquiggle · 21/12/2011 15:38

Last year's 50m roll of Costco paper had grids on the back. Brilliant stuff. I have to admit I did stand and debate (with myself, clearly, since no-one else would engage in such lunacy) whether reversible paper was a retrograde step. However, the pattern on one side is just dots, which actually serve as cutting lines anyway...

ViviPrudolf · 21/12/2011 15:52

WRAPPING ROOOOOM

eandemum · 21/12/2011 16:12

I treated myself this year to a new pair of scissors and lots of refills for my wrist sellotape dispenser - FAB!
[need to get out more emotcion]

pixierara · 21/12/2011 16:16

I don't mind wrapping the big pressies, but the stocking fillers really, really get to me. Someone gave me the best tip ever - coloured tissue paper!!!!!!! Takes about 10 minutes per stocking and the kids love it as the paper is obviously different to the one I use!!!

gingerwench · 21/12/2011 16:32

Ah but pixierara stocking presents don't need to be wrapped because being in the stocking is enough! Although I wrapped them this year for some masochistic reason.

I hate wrapping. This year I managed to give myself a wrapping injury involving sellotape, and the removal of a load of skin on my lip. At least the blood didn't hit the wrapping paper.

MackerelOfFact · 21/12/2011 16:38

I use the cheapest, naffest, thinnest Poundland wrapping paper for stocking presents. It's cheap, it's easy to wrap with if you're not arsed about appearance (which I'm not for stocking presents, I didn't wrap them did I?!), it's much easier to rip apart, and the DCs get a chance to have the garish naff paper which I wouldn't dream of putting under the tree. Plus the flagrant disregard for all my own anal wrapping rules is quite liberating.

knockneedandknackered1 · 21/12/2011 16:42

i'm with you i hate wraping presents i always get my fingers stuckto celertape so annoyingHmm

PtCatalyst · 21/12/2011 16:47

I've done that before ginger. Hence my addiction to tape dispensers now...

Oh, and tissue paper is EXCELLENT for wrapping awkward shaped things - sit present in the middle of a few sheets (of either one or many colours), gather up at the top and tie with ribbon (in shades either matching or contrasting with the tissue paper). Done!

confuddledDOTcom · 21/12/2011 16:49

YANBU but I love it!

I'm really careful about it, make them look really neat, no excess of paper, the pattern has to be going in the right direction, the seams out of the way etc. I tend to get other people's presents given to me to wrap.

LaCiccolina · 21/12/2011 16:50

Hate wrapping, enjoy buying.

Enjoy quaffing the wine whilst I wrap. Enjoy DD presents as she's 1 so can't undo ribbon etc so its sellotape only. HATE wrapping DH presents as he's ocd with ribbons, bows, unseen tape and all sorts. His mother has one colour christmas's like a magazine shoot and its rubbed off on him. I like multi colour and slightly squashed stuff with memories.... Each to own though, hic hic! Cheers all xxx

stealthsquiggle · 21/12/2011 16:59

Oh yes, FC wrap stocking presents in an entirely different style to me wrapping "big" presents - really really cheap paper, thrown together randomly with sellotape - and it's actually liberating and fun to do (except FC has yet to go and source his paper for this year which could prove to be a problem as the DC are now around all the time Hmm)

CheerfulYank · 21/12/2011 17:01

The wrapping room is one of the things Tori Spelling uses when explaining how crazy her mother was, though. Xmas Smile

I like the idea of it too but after awhile it's like ENOUGH AREADY.

I'm going to get wrapping paper tonight and will look for some gorgeous stuff. Xmas Grin

phyllisdiller · 21/12/2011 17:06

I used to love it! Film on TV, wine, presents it makes everything feel Christmasy!

Yulewithadragontattoo · 21/12/2011 17:09

Anyone looking for gift labels Tesco have some in their basics range 30p for ten red bells. Simple and look good with most Xmas wrap. Also big enough to write a short message and a few names.

sozzledchops · 21/12/2011 17:20

Hate it and it always takes much longer then I thought and husband buggers off to bed leaving me to finish it. Really don't think I'm a Christmas person.

BalloonSlayer · 21/12/2011 17:23

My tips:

  1. Buy those sticker-type labels which have To and From on. While still on the roll, write a load of them to each DC and one or two to other people as appropriate. Then peel off relevant stickers when needed.
  1. Use craptastic cheap paper so it doesn't matter if you waste some; cut loads and loads of pieces of different sizes out and leave on the floor.
  1. Sellotape dispenser.
  1. When stages 1-3 complete, just sit there, grab present, wrap in any old bit of paper, put right sticker on, repeat x 50, luvvly jubbly.
  1. If you have a real fire burn leftover paper on it as it makes the flames turn different colours.
pranma · 21/12/2011 17:43

Anyone who loves wrapping and lives near me can do mine-I used to love it but now I just end up with backache and bad temper :(
